    This bridge is the Carlton bridge in Bath, Maine. I know because that is my father working the controls. The bridge was operated by Maine Central Railroad. It was a funny thing to tell my friends growing up my dads on Sesame Street.

      Good to know. I looked it up, and at the time of filming, the tugboat was about 88 years old! (built in 1897). It was wrecked in 1989.

      This clip first aired on December 24, 1986, in episode 2253, so this footage was likely filmed earlier in 1986, or possibly in 1984 or 1985. On what date was this footage filmed?

    I remember walking across the bridge, standing at the gate and watching and feeling the whole process.

      I remember crossing it when I was 8 months pregnant up until I delivered - and each time I'd hope that the bridge didn't go up just in case. Of course I never got caught on the bridge then - but I spent plenty of afternoons waiting for a boat or two to go through.

    One of my favourite sketches. The kid narrates clearly. I also vividly remember the sound of the tugboat's engine, and loved seeing machinery being operated - buttons and levers - from when I saw this film in around 1987.

    Victor, when did your dad work on the bridge? I'm guessing this footage was taken some time in the early to mid eighties. I read somewhere that this was the heaviest and longest bridge of its kind at the time of its construction. A marvel of engineering especially considering it was built in the late 1920's.

    • @mainiac4pats
      @mainiac4pats Před 5 lety +2

      My guess is someone summers in Maine, probably a producer or someone involved with filming SS. Most anyone who’s anyone from NY, NJ, Connecticut, Massachusetts or the like spends time driving through Bath, Maine over the Carleton Bridge. Or, should I say, did? There’s a new bridge now and they only use this one for trains. Some dolt figured they wouldn’t pay for the new bridge to accommodate the existing train network. I digress, beautiful river and place, the mighty Kennebec River.

      The top road part is cut off at one point, so (you can't drive onto it I suppose?) it looks like something out of an apocalyptic movie. Just a bridge that ends in the middle of the river.

      Yeah, in the late 90's they constructed a newer bridge because the two-lane one wasn't cutting it. Driving across the Carlton Bridge was terrifying at times.

    • @MarniBailey82
      @MarniBailey82 Před 4 měsíci

      @CyberSphere2024 some poor Japanese tourists went THROUGH the side railing in their vehicle, fortunately they didn't go fully over the edge, just tipping. And climbed out the back hatch. So the bridge was finally deemed unsafe, since the railing was like "meh, you can go through if you want". 😅
