  • In Scottish history there are lots of famous battles and Castle sieges. Scottish history tour guide Bruce Fummey takes you to St Andrews Castle and Broughty Ferry Castle to tell the story of two of the longest and most dramatic sieges in the life of Mary Queen of Scots that shaped a nation.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

As a wee diversion to this, seeing as you've mentioned the Battle of Pinkie, I find it utmost despicable that a new build housing estate off Pinkie Road, Musselburgh, has been named after the Duke of Somerset, if it's no bad enough Dunbar has streets after Cromwell, we now get this. How to honour Scottish war dead right enough.

The longest castle siege is still going on, in the United States no less. It started in 1921 at a place called White Castle. Slowly, at first, then it gained momentum. As he hungry besiegers grew in numbers, the owner had to expand White Castle to meet the onslaught. The battles raged even outside of the Whit Castle location itself, in communities across the country, as many families were divided over the issue. Strong opinions in favor, or against White Castle, pitted brother against brother, father against mother. Few were spared, and few are spared today. There was even a documentary made a few years ago about the perils of going to the White Castle and the fate of Harold and his friend Kumar.
And if you think this part of history is unsavory, wait until you hear about the fighting at Battle Creek, Michigan.

In the 70's (different times) when I was a bairn I soften played in the ruins of Balmerino Abbey, there is some historical fact that I can't remember about the big old free in the grounds that now has its arms supported it is that old!
Also there is a battlefield directly up the steep brae from Balmerino at the Gallery crossroads and another on the road to Newburgh. This one conveniently has a layby with a plague on the wall , or it may have just been the Newburgh locals and visitors from Gauldry.
Also in Fife between Cardenden an Kirkcaldy is the spot of the last duel fought on Scottish soil.

Norman Leslie, who led the seizure of St Andrews Castle, was related to the Patrick Grey who sold Broughty Ferry Castle to the English. They knew fine that the Stewart succession had specifically excluded the female line, so young Mary had no right to be the 'Queen of Scots'. Bruce, Scottish history will always be around (yer jobs safe pal😂) cause we have guys like you out there spreading the word.....& no just the tartan, Runrig & Tunocks tea cake romantic view many may have....(thanks Outlander😂).
But all the dark, twisted debauchery & cheeky shenanigans our ancestors got up to.
For every wee wonder we made, we wapped oot a whopper or ten woeful tales...& truly that's what the people want.
The biggest thing us scots gave this world is simply, it's our wandering spirit always looking & a purpose (be it good or...a bit on the naughty side) it's that lust that makes so many look into their own history back to the auld land with hope of was my Scottish bloodline one of the good uns or where they "a wee touch shady like?"....or to put it in "chewin the fat" terms....good guy, good guy, good guy, Wan...(let ya finish that one yersel 😂).
Now the auld independence thang....I'm pro "go it alone" not to stick it to the English (sassenachs!! If yer French 😂) but cause I think it would benefit both countries "as long as they learn to play nice this time round" then it's a win win. If they don't then this time round they'll be told tae GET TAE!!!!. that's just my veiw.

Bruce I must disagree with you in regards to Henry IIIV, he wasn’t strictly a Protestant, unlike his daughter Elizabeth. Henry was by his own account an Anglo Catholic, and all he did was replace the Pope as head of the English Church, with himself. That’s why the English Church wasn’t truly Protestant except during the time of the English Republic, and has to this day retained Bishops and much of the Catholic ceremony, especially the high church, often referred to as bells and smells.
