3:01 your halfontes are also exactly on top if your "low number" is on the same e.g. 50,50,50,50 ... this does not need to be high...

actually these numbers create the angle of the halftone :)

Thank you so much! I'm making a birthday thing for my best friend and I was having trouble with other places explaining halftones in Illustrator, your tutorial was the one that got me through.

Late comment but thank you for this tutorial. I had to design a self-portrait with 3 different art styles on it and I wanted to make a Pop Art background so this halftone technique really worked for me without the stress.

It´s not just that it was big in the 50´s, the halftones come from older printing systems, they did not have the tech for better DPI outputs and shadowing (a rough description). The look has been kept alive as a popular design style, but it was just the way things were printed years ago, it is a cool look tough!. Cool tutorial!

A tip for everyone that's having problems regarding the quality of the dots: it barely works when your canvas is too small. I was working on a postcard and everytime I tried to do that effect, the haltfone pattern would come out pixelated. Instead, I opened up a new document (size A3), did the effect there and copied the pattern to my postcard.

The resulting spheres are extremely jagged and the trace results in small teardrops instead of perfect spheres. Any suggestions?
SOLVED: Changed the trace option from default to "high fidelity".

I personally got the best result by using low fidelity actually and cut way down on the render time. Food for thought for anyone trying this.

When I "Make & Expand" my object, all the circles distort into oblong shapes - wondering if anyone has a workaround for this!

    • @annabellegoldin-mertdogan9930

Not sure if you need this anymore, but open the image trace panel before you expand. Hit "advanced >" and turn off snap curves to lines.

Won't let me change the colour from anything outside of greyscale, is this because I chose the greyscale gradient? I think I've answered my own question will try again using a colour gradient instead.

If you were to set the common angle at 45 or 90 or multiples thereof you would have a better edge on the dot cluster.
