Try to get it to attach to a Moss pole and become tall. The variegation gets better when it starts to climb.

Haha I love your honesty about this plant! I’ve only purchased mine recently since the prices came down and I’m a big fan of the burgundy-brown, would be just as happy with or without the pink, so think my PPP is a winner - but absolutely agree with the points you make here 👍 (Finding I’m delighted by how resilient this plant is. Cleaned some initial root rot when I got it - your video on the subject was a huge help! - and as worried as I was, both vines and a pile of pups are still thriving and giving me new leaves! Thanks for your excellent advice! 😃)

I feel bad that you had such a lackluster experience with this plant because it’s such a fun one to watch and care for haha. Maybe if you started with one that had better genetics, you would’ve had more fun growing it? Anyway, thank you so much for these reviews. I've had one early as well, a small one, greenish and gave it away after a few props cause i'd had it lol, it was this scragly thing stowed away in my bedroom. :) Then recently I rebought it as a big plant ! 20cm leaves, four growpoints ! fell in love and only cost 20 quid ! with lots of light less juvenile plants seem to do stay darker, almost blackish for a long time and they can grow huge leaves if you give them a moss pole, so now i'm loving mine. Not for the pink variegation, but for leave size and darkness and burgundy stems, wouldn't mind if it reverted actually, but then it will reward you now and then. Oh and the nice thing is that this plant is not man made, it's actually all from a variegated Erubescens plant found in nature, if my sources are correct. So I tend to call it Erubescens variegata, cause I always hated the name.

I like variegated plants however, I don’t want to be stressed out with plants, I want them to give me joy and keep me connected with memories from my childhood ( I’m South American living in the States). I bought a “Burgundy Princess” a year ago because I enjoy dark leaves and the burgundy and pink stripes on the stem is beautiful, I bought it with not expectations of pink leaves. I’m surprised because occasionally I have leaves with pretty pink speckles… I think if expectations are high regarding pink, this is a frustrating plant. I’m content with mine, like the dark green, love the stem and the only special kind of care I give her is by the time she is trying to push a leaf, I turn on my humidifier to help her and she has not problem!

I'm glad you mentioned the planterina pink princess... back when she cut it up and sold the props, I got one of those (most expensive plant still to this day in my collection). It did its best this summer when i had it out on my covered porch with tons of humidity and had it on a moss pole. I was so excited it was thriving! Then I had that moment like you when your beautiful leaf snapped. I went into a local grocery store and saw 4" pots of pink princess. For $30. 🥺. That's when I decided to chop mine up. I still love mine tho because I feel like I got a real one, not a tc one that costa farms is putting out... so that helps me out when I see them so cheap nowadays. I still sometimes wish that I got something I really wanted back then, like a Thai constellation instead. But it is what it is and I love her just the same. That's how it goes sometimes. On another note, I feel like my leaves did get bigger while it was in the summer on the moss pole, so that was definitely helpful! And all the pieces I chopped are doing fine, so it does propagate pretty easily! And no pests for me as of yet 🙂 love hearing your experience! Your videos are some of my favorites!

@Miri Ates yeah, a bit. Maybe every other leaf or 2 will be green/burgundy, few pink speckles. The other leaves will have chunks of pink or streaks at least. Since i posted I had one of my cuttings pop me out a full on half moon 🥰😍 I would say mine is pretty consistently throwing out an even mix of those 3 leaves tho. Nothing crazy or super variegated. And now she's chopped up and we'll see if it changes! Lol

.. And while everyone else have known this plant since way back, I just got one today.. I got curious and wanted to know why it seems so "special" 😳.. Ook, it's cute, and the one I've got is a wee little one I'd say, just a baby really, so might take a little time to grow up 🤗
    Just a little info 🤗
.. The "Pink princess" is a scandent hybrid.. Leafs are dark purblish-green with contrasting pink variegation.. The pink variable, emerging as large splotches, small streaks or occasionally an entire leaf.. These plants grows much better in low-light conditions and can suffer if exposed to bright light (sunlight or artificial plant light)..
    Native range: hybrid / cultivar..
    Type: herbaceous evergreen..
    Family: Aracea..
    Hight: to 130 cm..
    Spread: to 50 cm..
    Sun: Semi shade..
.. The "Burgundy princess" is also a scandent hybrid and the care is the exact same as the Pink princess.. But, the major difference between the "pink princess" and "burgundy princess" is in the color of their respective foliage.. The variegation of the Pink princess is pale pink in color, the burgundy princess has leaves that has much darker variegation.. Leafs blades are cordate, dark purple..

  • @sunnymelbourneplants
    @sunnymelbourneplants Před rokem +2

I got one from TC and that didn't go as pink as I though lt it would. I've grown mine on a moss pole and the leaf size increases but I haven't had more than pink speckles. The first leaves were pink and that was it, it's the dark leaves as you mentioned now. Every leaf struggles to open maybe because of my low humidity but honestly it's a pain. I might get rid of it this year 😅
however, the non tc ones seem to be more pink and it's more stable. The leaves don't get stuck and open a bit differently. These are till quite expensive here in Australia, bit I ain't spending $200.00 AUD for this 😂 thanks for a cool video!

  • @margiains

My White princess has more pink than my pink princess, lol..its pathetic..the things I do love about it however, is that I have it growing up a moss pole and it has nearly black, quite impressive mature spade shape leaves..very goth. 🖤
I do live in hope that one day it might surprise me with a random pink leaf..won't hold my breath though! 😅

Experience from Norway - in 1 year growth - around 10 leafs. Exposed to direct sun speed up the growth and gives more variegation. Repotting speed up the growth as well. Movement to the ,,darker" window almost stopt the plant. Generally it started to be leggy and not one of my favourites.

Hello again! I love this series! Oh the ppp. I loved it on Instagram. In reality the growth pattern was scraggly. Then prices dropped and I got a good deal on a plantlet from a tray of tc probably. Good pink showing at first. It didn’t last! I kept getting sun damage spots and burn. If not sun spots, then reverted leaves. So frustrating. Very easy to prop in water but will rot if soil isn’t chunky enough in my care. No issues snapping leaves when unfurling but I grow on a patio in Florida humidity. Fast grower sizes up great even without a moss pole. Variegation seems to come and go at will. A plant shop in my town has a mature beauty on a moss pole under a sol tech bulb and it is to die for (but still kinda scraggly looking). No pest pressures in my care and spider mite/mealy adjacent. It does have really stunning dark leaves with the bright red petioles. Wish I could love it for that but it’s been a pretty disappointing plant. Glad I waited to try it!

You would really like my five-piece princesses they all seem to not have much of any pink at all even less than the one you're showing much less but many many of the leaves come out half moon half burgundy half dark dark green not what I was looking for when I bought the plants originally all from the same mother but I must say I do enjoy it. Even with the problem of its leaves getting stuck poor little thing. I would like to have a lot more of these pink princesses with different genetics from multiple sellers all around the world just to see what I can get. It's not just about genetics from old species it's about genetics in general.

In The Notation Section I Put That I Wanted My Cutting To Be Wearing Some PINK... And To Hold Off Sending One Until One Wearing Pink Was Available!!! SHE Arrived With A Large Half Moon Leaf That Had A Pretty Shade Of Pink. SHE Had Some Roots... SO I Planted Her In A Plastic Cup With A Soil/Perlite/Stratum??? Mixture. SHE Has Kept The Large Half Moon Leaf And One Leaf Has Unfurled From That Stem... NOT A Large Size And Another One Is Unfurling As Well. THEY Are Both A Burgundy Color. I am frustrated with the leaves getting damage though but my house is dry so it's probably something I could change with more humidity.

I was blown away by the market of the PPP. I remember being shocked to see people paying well over $150 for unrooted cuttings of a plant with such unstable variegation. and so many people struggled to grow it out at all, theirs either needed more humidity, a better pole/climbing situation, different lighting, or would succumb to pests. I knew the market would eventually drop once people realized how much of a gamble these finicky plants are. They do seem to do best in greenhouse settings, so propagating is probably a breeze for cultivators. Has always seemed overrated to me.

Also other fantastic Media are pure Coco Chips, pure Perlite with a bit of a water Reservoir plus the aforementioned Hydro Solution , all purpose Medium mixed with Perlite and Coco coir and Chips.
Also the more natural light or grow light you give them and Also ramp up the humidity the better the variegation gets and the easier it gets for them to unfurl their leaves .

Hated mine, just thought it was ugly looking, the pink wasn't a nice pink and the green wasn't a nice green. Sold it soon as I could (for more than I paid for it, which was good!). Much prefer my other two pink plants, the syngonium pink splash and the ficus belize.

Ohhh good going for that one getting your money back and then some and yeah both of those plants with pink in them would be so much more satisfying 😊

My $235 pp is unhappy regardless what I do for it. Its limp, almost black leaves and every new leaf is either stuck, won’t unfurl or is extremely tiny. Im actually planting in a pot to put outside and it can live over the summer or not. I no longer give a damn.

I would think this is a freak of nature. If it was bred I would hope those marketing it would be responsible and guarantee a stable coloring. That being said I have people on the lookout for one here in town. I'm up for the challenge and willing to wait to see when it throws some pink. Gives me something to do while I try to stay out of trouble😏

What a fμcking ugly PPP 😂😂 I bought one for my gf for the last valentine day, they are pretty cheap now. It's not a lot better but really beautiful one are rare.
It has probably a lot of erubescens DNA but it's a hybrid. As far as I know it was developped by Robert McCauley, who is (directly or not) behind a lot of colorfull self-heading philodendrons. He crossed several existing similar cultivars and species together to get a certain color and then crossed it a last with a self-heading, rosette philo and patented it. PPP appeared during the hybridization process, and since variegation is usually lost in the seed, PPP didn't received the ultimate cross to make rosette like. It explain the leggy growing habbit.
The variegation is very interesting because it's not regular chimerism because fully reverted plants always come back. It seems to have a virus or a transposon that randomly kill the chloroplasts, but the plant is also able to suppress it when stressed.
And this is why the older and less propagated plants have more variegation. The pink part tend to be partially lost during propagation like with every variegation, and the "virus" is supposed, so you basically need to build up again the pink from new random spots.

Agree with the comments. You have a rather bad looking (same as mine btw) pink princes. I didn't know they came 50% pink. Those are cool looking but mine has like 3 green leaves and then a 4 square centimeter blob of pink. Boring.

Hi Memo! I've had plants for years now but the PPP never really caught my eye. You can get small plants for single digits here in Germany now, but I still don't think I'll ever get one. It's as you said - it just isn't that exciting.
I actually have a question about something you said. When you were talking about variegation and genetics, you said it got "watered down" after propagation- but as propagates are genetically identical to the mother plant, how do you "lose" variegation by propagating? I had always assumed that people just propagated less-variegated plants and sold them so out of all the plants available for sale, only a small percentage came with genetically good variegation in the first place. It just seems strange to me as you should be getting "clones" by propagation.
