    Hi friends! When I say “she intimidates others”, I mean “she imitates others (behaviors)”, so sorry about that, hope it doesn’t confuse you 😂.

    I just finished Convenience Store Woman and I really loved it. I could relate with her thinking sometimes. She came across as a very practical person and very observant. I found the topic of societies expectations very interesting. Thank you for the review and recommendation ☺️

      Thank you for your lovely comment! And yeah I loved the main character so much, and you are right - she's so practical and observant! Sometimes I wish other characters in the book would feel that too haha,.

    i do intend to read it..i'm always fascinated by people who totally give themselves to something. when i was young i read a scene in "zorba the greek" by Kazantzakis..where the the character tells how he found one of his fingers kept getting in the way of making pots..so he cut it off! i loved that and it became a touchstone for me of passionate involvement.

      Wow Zorba the Greek sounds so powerful, and I'm intrigued! Thanks for mentioning the book. And I can totally understand your point on people who give themselves to something, and I'd say the main character in Convenience Store Woman really did give herself to the store! I hope you enjoy it~! XD

    I absolutely loved this book as well! I think it’s my favorite I’ve read this year so far. I can’t wait for the English translation of Earthlings coming soon!

    This book became one of my favorite books of all time, and I think your review is so great and really does it justice. The book was short and so powerful, but I missed Keiko when it was over, so it was nice to hear your review and revisit her.

    You had me sold at the comparison to Jeanette Winterson. My library actually has this one, so it's definitely going on my list. Disappointing that the Chinese translation is better, but it sounds worth a go anyway. Wonderful review!

    I am very happy to find Murata Sayaka (村田 沙耶香)'s work reviewed by a bilingual reader who reads both English and Chinese especially because I cannot read Chinese versional at all. Thank you very much. I would like to listen to your review again after I have read the English version.

    !!!! You are so kind!! Thank you for the shoutout🤗💕 You're genuinely one of my favourite BookTubers too! Your reviews are always insightful and I love hearing your perspective. I'm glad you mentioned the translation thing. It can make a huge difference to how people connect with the text. But it's also a testament to the story that, despite that slight barrier, I still enjoyed it overall and took a lot of good things from it. (Also, I think the guy in the book was sooo annoying and unreal-but-totally-real that he became hilarious....but not someone you'd want to spend much time with...hahah!)

      Thank you, I just love your videos and taste in books so much 😘😘😘Hahahaha I totally understand the "unreal-but-totally-real" feeling!!! My partner found him not so annoying tho, he thought "there are people like that in real life", which is true, but so sad 😂

    I think every review I’ve seen of this has been overwhelmingly positive and I enjoyed your thoughts Meonicorn, especially about the way people expect us to be normal and get afraid or offended if we don’t. I plan to read this at some point as I like novels about outsiders.

    • @TheBookishLand
      @TheBookishLand  Před 5 lety +1

      I heard everybody loves it too 😆I think if you like books about outsiders you will enjoy this one a lot, one of my friends said this book reminded him of The Outsiders (also called The Strangers) by Albert Camus :D

    You read both the Chinese and English translations!!!! Omg so talented!! I can kind of read in Chinese haha, I’m learning. Do you think someone like me could read this book in Chinese??

    • @TheBookishLand
      @TheBookishLand  Před 5 lety

      I only read the Chinese translation for this one, It's not talented it's because I was born and raised in China lol. I don't know what's your Chinese level but you can try because the sentences in this book were quit short :D But I don't really know lol.

      Haha has a similar conclusion to Jeanette Winterson's book, I'd say that their styles are quit different, but equally good!

    I went to a bar w this British person and I was drunk so I wasn't monitoring myself at ALL. And I accidentally mimicked his accent without meaning to and they thought I was making fun ;(
