  • In this video we'll be taking a look at all of the advancements made to the Synthstrom Deluge with the community firmware. We'll be taking a look at what has been introduced with the firmware so far, and what has recently been released in the new Beethoven Beta! There's a lot to cover here, so I hope this proves useful to someone out there.

    The new 1.1 versions takes it to another new level. So glad that you liked the arpeggiator stuff, more to come in 1.2 ;p
    Just one note to keyboard sidebar actions. You can set in Settings-> Defaults->UI -> Keyboard -> Sidebar controls -> Momentary velocity/modwheel to disabled, and those two will behave now like a touch strip where you can slide your finger through the pads and the last pressed pad will be the one you last touched (instead of jumping back to the last tapped one, like showcased in the video)

      I feel you. Feature creep has always been a bit of a thing with the Deluge. Fortunately I see it falling under the 80/20 rule. It's great that it has all of these features, but you'll probably only wind up using about 20% of them per project. Find a workflow that suits you and forget the rest until you need it ;P

At least you can automate the stutter rate, so when you trigger it yourself, you don't need to twist or turn anything.

    Can someone explain to me how the notch and bandpass filters work? For me the both sound like regular LP or HP filters.

    • @postsolarpunk
      @postsolarpunk Před 2 měsíci +3

      so if morph is at 0 for both the "LPF" and "HPF" then they act like normal LPF or HPF, but as you turn up the morph, each morphs into the other type as morph goes from 0 to 50. This is why they're called "state variable" or abbreviated SV_B
      first do init synth
      1) set filter type to SV_B for bandpass or SV_N for notch (or whatever it says on OLED)
      3) Set the cutoff of the low pass filter to 25 first so we can hear the differences in the filter types
      2) the pad directly below the dB/OCT pad on the front panel is the morph control. This will morph the filter type from 0 to 50.
      3) For the "low pass filter": morph 0 is low pass, morph 25 will be bandpass (or notch), and morph 50 is high pass. This is why we adjusted the cutoff frequency of the filter to 25 first because a cutoff at 50 will be like if you had a band pass at 6000 Hz or something way high up there. Set the morph to a value, then wiggle the cutoff back and forth to hear how it sounds.
      4) For the "high pass filter" it's the opposite morph: morph 0 is high pass, morph 25 band/notch, morph 50 is low pass.
      If LPF isn't one of the state variable models, then the morph control acts like a filter drive.
      If HPF isn't one of the state variable models, then the morph control acts like a filter cutoff FM amount and it sounds really wild with a ton of resonance and a wavetable synth wtf

      @RSKT_music  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yep, that's the one. Weirdly, I don't hear anything dropping out on the track, but that light is supposed to tell you that things are being dropped due to the CPU usage. Some of the synths in this are wavetables with a sample loaded into the second oscillator though. If I'm being honest, I haven't noticed any CPU difference with the community firmware. The only time I ever noticed this issue was back when they first released wavetables and euclidean sequencing. For some reason, some of my older tracks struggled to play after that update. Barely noticeable though. I wouldn't stress too much about it.

    sooo... as of May 2024, even tho its still costantly being updated, do you think Synthstrom is gonna come out with a new hardware machine anytime soon or drop the price of a new Deluge? im gonna start saving to buy one and dont want a new model to immediately come out / have the Deluge get a huge price drop... what yall think?

    • @JuanUys

      If you like the Deluge in its current form and save up to buy the Deluge in its current form, then any future hardware releases don't matter, right?
      I mean, it's really amazing in its current form, you can't go wrong.

      Fair question! I know Synthstrom have made statements in the past, expressing no interest in making a Deluge 2.0. That said, those statements were a long time ago. Maybe the Deluge going open source frees them up to work on something new, but if that's the case I doubt we'll see it for a very long time. I'd say you're safe to jump in now :)

    As a new deluge owner(it on its way so I haven't got it yet) Should I install the community version or stick to the official firmware?

    • @RSKT_music
      @RSKT_music  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I would go right ahead and install the community version. If you watch my series on how to use the Deluge, all of it is still there and relevant. The community firmware just adds on extra stuff around it! :)

      Congrats! I hope it makes it to you quicker than expected! The Deluge is my next G.A.S. obsession... I will be getting one in a few weeks! I'm just worried they release new hardware or the price drops significantly a month after I get it.

    I wish we could get the cc for the stutter. I'd rather map this to my fader fox, other than ware out the Deluge know.

    • @RSKT_music
      @RSKT_music  Před 2 měsíci

      True. At least for now you can automate the stutter rate. Just can't automate the triggering of the stutter. Hopefully it gets added someday.

    • @RSKT_music
      @RSKT_music  Před 2 měsíci

      I haven't noticed any issues with it. In fact, the play button now blinks when you're starting to push the CPU too much. Tbh, the only time I noticed the CPU dip was back when they introduced wavetables into an update.

    Should I sell my Play+ for a Deluge?

    • @RSKT_music
      @RSKT_music  Před 2 měsíci +3

      The Play+ looks like a lot of fun and seems very immediate. I have to admit though, I'm pretty biased and I think the Deluge is absolutely leagues ahead of the Play+. I would highly recommend getting a Deluge. It's just a far more capable machine.
