Awesome sounds! I had borrowed my friends XL2 for about 2 years actually... loved the bass and it always sounded great.

I have had mine since 1993, It was my first instrument, and didn't have another bass since. And recently put flatwounds, and love it. it became even sweater to play! Never had problems with breaking strings (and I used to play in a hardcore/punkrock band)

Hey Tony, greetings from GSP exit 123. I played an XL-2 HARD in a funk metal band from 1985 - 1990 and never broke a string while I commonly broke G and D strings on my Music Man and Fenders. I missed the 'Berger so much that I recently bought myself another XL-2 for my 60th birthday. Fabulous instrument that's misunderstood by many. I too have traveled with it in the overhead on airliners. Try that with your P bass! 🙂 Thanks for the vids!

I’m leaving this comment on 31 May 2024. Within the last year, I became aware of what it is about the P-bass that makes it sound so rich and full. The split coil pickup is in fact a humbucker like those EMGs. No explain why the XL two is so capable of emulating a P-bass. Now, I’ve got a question, Tony. Have you ever investigated getting the string adapter for the top end of that base that would enable you to use regular strings that are fastened at the nut instead of the double ball ones? A different user of that model who I played with here in New York from 2016 to 2021 informed me about that adaptor.
Now for something totally irrelevant. Watching the video, I noticed something about those flat wounds that I have noticed whenever I looked at an upright bass. They’re pretty reflective. The overhead light is easily bouncing off the strings. Must be the nylon that they’re made out of.

Bless! Thank you for this explanantion / demonstration. I've been flirting with the idea of putting flats on my Hohner B2A and I think I will now.

I used to break strings all the time on my XL2 playing live... I just figured the reason was I was playing pretty hard.

    Hi Tony
    I’ve a few Steinbergers
I used to have a problem with strings breaking on one of my L2s
Turned out to be a burr on the saddle
Quick lick of sandpaper and it was sorted

When I was breaking strings on my Steinberger, it turned out to be a sharp edge on the saddle

@@senny4405 Got ya! I used to play really hard back in the day! LOL I would go through G strings like no ones business. My old Luis Johnson days :) and that was on GHS boomers heavy gage back then. Since then I have lighten up a bit. I now use light to medium gage strings. Either DR's or SIT's mostly medium gage or lights gage from time to time. I have not broken a string in years. I have been into Steinberger from the first day they were introduced to the market, nothing like them. I am big on headless basses and guitars, I have a few Strandberg, Kiesel and Ibanez headless basses and guitars. Actually one of my guitars is a Steinberger Synapse guitar with the sliding Capo (I know Gibson LOL) but I love it. I want going to get a XLS bass soon. I did pick up the Steinberger 5 strings Sprit bass a few years back, I intended it to be a project bass and was going to do some mods'. But I heard the Synapse bass version and really liked it and felt it blew the Sprit away. I feel it's the next best thing to an original at a lower cost, I am looking at one for sale as we speak but I just may wait until I get an original, nothing like them.

I've been playing bass about 20 years and never broke a string.
