I think the first step is to explore the origins of the fear to face the self.
It likely began in childhood but it is essential to understand the toxic messages that result in denial and suppression of real emotions and experiences.
This step doesn’t always require completely turning away from the family of origin but it does require seeing them as human beings who were probably damaged too and that acceptance of the truth is not a form of betrayal but a duty to the self.
