MAMA and MMA are different Korean award shows. While MAMA stages are impressive, the recommendations you likely encountered most in the comments section would be MMA 2018 and MMA 2019. Those stages are literally legendary performances by BTS, so I highly recommend checking them out, too : )

They invite certain groups/artists.
They release line up for performers
Nominations are made around 1-2months before the show date. But all throughout the yr the list of nominations are updated every quarter and you sometimes predict who's going to br nominated and win basing on the criteria bec the stats arw almost always accurat3 except for the judge's votes.
Regardless of the noms and winners, if bts wilp be at the show w/ or w/o performances, armys will show up and fill the stadium.
This exact event became the reason y mnet banned light sticks. Bec this looked like BTS concert and not an awards show 😂

For each of these award shows, both MMA and MAMA, there are usually one or two standouts.
Here, it is ANPANMAN.
The best performance of IDOL was MMA (MAMA?) 2018.
But one with an OVERALL AMAZING medley of performances was MMA (melon music awards) 2019.
It was just before the pandemic, BTS just came back from 2 years of world tours in a scale never seen before.

You guys definitely need to watch their MMA performances from 2018 and especially 2019. Their performance from 2019 is 37 minutes long, but it's incredible. MAMA and MMA are 2 different award shows. MAMA stands for Mnet Asian Music Awards and MMA stands for Melon Music Awards.
If BTS attends, ARMY like to fill the venues so that the organizers know that BTS is not alone and that they can no longer commit any more injustices towards them like before.
To answer your question guys, they are just people that get into the award show. These are different than American shows.
They run these shows like a Big performance. Different groups are asked to perform, in one , i think it was MAMA three groups backed out when they heard that BTS were going to perform so the extra time was given to BTS and the guys did a 47 minute performance. Fans buy up seats and if BTS are there you best bet ARMY are there in droves. So yes it looks like a BTS concert.

I am a 54 year old punk rocker and ARMY for life. I love that you did some research on the songs before you listen to them. Anpanman is about how, just like all Anpanman can do is feed the hungry, all BTS can do is feed our souls with their songs. That’s how they are heroes to ARMY. There is a lot of depth to their lyrics and their official music videos. Also, some songs like Idol, Ddaeng, Ugh, Spine Breaker and Paldogangsan have a lot of cultural references. I recommend you watch the videos on these as explained by a Korean. They taught me a lot. Borahae 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Driving down the highway to work with Anpanman blaring from the speakers is HIGHLY recommended 🙂 Especially if traffic is bad.

I get so frustrated by this performance of Fake Love, because it’s too dark. Fortunately there’s a dance practice of this performance so you can see what’s happening. Also the sound is off some members you can hear better than others. I think MMA awardshow is better. 💜💜💜

Camera man and this editing didn’t give any justice to that performance. Bighit doing great job by providing dance practice.
Same here - please watch the version at this link czcams.com/video/MZzFqPF8OIc/video.html which combines the two official videos (from Mnet and BANGTANTV) to show the full choreo because why oh why did Mnet cut away from the peak of the dance break?? 🥲 Could only tweak the darkness a tiny bit but at least the full choreo and stage set-up is there to see in one edit. [wow, after watching this Mnet broadcast again - we barely get to see any of the dance break at all! And completely missed the poignant ending where JK's hand drops from Jin's... argh... smh smh *facepalm* heavy sigh... 😤]

I agree. I always wondered if maybe my eyes were just so bad that I can’t see it correctly. I have the same problem with 2019 MMA when JHope did his dance. There is so much of it that I can’t really see. I’m sure it is amazing and I’ve heard people comment on how amazing it is, but I can’t see most of it because it is so dark. 😕
JK was stealthily fixing/struggling with his mic for 80% of this performance and I never noticed until I'd already watched it a thousand times and then read a comment pointing it out. 😂 True professional! (And that's why you might notice it was JK's backing track instead of his live voice for part of this performance).
Yeah I never noticed until someone pointed it out once. He never missed a beat. Truly impressive.

They have performed at American award shows as well. They’ve won awards to. AMA, billboard and the most recent would be the 2022 Grammys. The only award they didn’t win was a Grammy.

Asian Award shows are like concerts, and everything they do outdoes anything the Western Award shows have. It doesn't even compare.
Korean award shows are really massive with high-budget performances at least extra generous if BTS is performing. MMA is better then MAMA because some of the best choreographies and presentations we have seen are in that one. Also, you will see most of the crowd cheering for BTS bcoz they were legends at this point, automatically 90% of the crowd becomes bts crowd (ofcourse they got army bombs in hands)...its kinda same as when Tylor Swift performs at some American award show, you will see almost everyone supporting her.

BTS basically transform awards show performances into their own mini-concerts. You can hear & see in their performance of, "Anpanman," that most of the crowd is singing along & chanting for call-and-response parts + the stadium is awash in ARMY Bombs, the group's official light stick. After this, MAMA banned official light sticks from their awards shows, so ARMYs came up with creative ways to get around it the next year.
Mind you, this was on the third evening of an hours-long awards show marathon that was stretched over three separate events in three different cities. A single evening's event lasted 4+ hours of broadcast time, not even including all the down time & pre-show waiting for audience members. This performance wasn't even in S. Korea, it was Hong Kong, and still the audience is not only engaged but re-energized at the end, because, well... that's BTS.

BTS's MMA(melon music awards) 2019 video will be also interesting. When their song 'I need you' intro part spreads Jimin's solo dance performance is originated from Korean traditional agricultural dance form, and 'Dionysus' will be good in most part. I recommend BTS's 2019 MMA performance 👌👌👌

might as well finish MAMA 2018 with Idol before looking at their MMA performance of 2018 then move on to their 2019 performances at both shows
They upped the anti for 2019. That was INSANE. It makes this look simple. They have had to limit BTS because it costs BTS a bomb and other artists are intimidated and do not want to be compared to them. For example the giant LED screens would have cost BTS seversl millions just to hire for a day. Thats not to mention the complex sets and huge crew of supporting dancers etc. Its bad enough the quality of music and dance they prioritise the fans experience and pay for quality production.

I never understood why the lighting was so dark for fake love. And I really hate, especially during the dance break, the cameraman zooms out to show the whole stadium. It’s all about the choreo, why are u so far away. That being said, the boys did great. I always love when you can really hear their true voices, even when JK’s was missing (except backtrack) momentarily because his micpack was messed up..just shows how amazing they are. 💜💜

The award shows are held in big stadiums so fans can attend... it is like one long concert... but no one has ever had stages like BTS

This performance was great, however, I think most people might have recommended the Hong Cong performance that year. It’s epic along with the 2019 MMA performance.

Hey L-pop On Lock, Is not a concert, those are Award Shows, Mnet, MMA, MAMA, and so on, most of the venues for Asia are big; and BTS we're use to make their presentations were part of a concert 😁 the performance are part of the show, are like mini breaks between categories since most of those show are 3 to 4 hours without the pre-ceremony and carpet thing

This is the norm for East Asian award shows & they are sometimes even bigger.
Each award show has different criteria, which are usually known & published. It's a mix of sales numbers, digital streaming, public voting before the show, jury vote... I guess that's all.
