So in their worldview these jobs give them an opportunity to make money that's probably better than they make back home. And no not everybody gets to choose what they do in life. A person lives in Vietnam on a wage of $300. If someone came to him and said to him, “Do you accept $700 per month, including travel tickets, food, and housing, do you think he will refuse?” Of course, he will agree, because he will eat for free and sleep for free, and he will consider sending all the salaries to his family. Independent contractor + no governments rules apply on them, so you see that they are exploiting the workers.
All you cruise ship employees are so amazing. I couldn't imagine dealing with so many drunk passengers after working so hard so many hours every day. I love cruising and love all the employees like you who always make sure we all have an amazing vacation.

I've done the wet dock thing a couple times in The Netherlands, way up on the North Sea near Germany. Pretty cool. The ship(s) were being finished and were not in revenue service yet so no passengers but all the amenities were functional.
I'm pretty certain it's nothing like she's portraying. I've taken several cruises and the staff has always been amazing... But they work them on the ships. Even at a port they work them pretty good.

I used to work in a shipyard, so I was able to go places that people wouldn’t be able to go including inside the sonar dome of a United States naval ship.
I use to work on Dry docks for Royal and Disney! Can confirm it’s a crazy project to witness and be apart of. Met people from all over the world but those gangways left me gassed every time I needed to get on and off board 😮💨

A ship of any size would kill you
That would only happen if they placed the blocks wrong before draining the water.
And they would know as soon as the water got low enough to stop supporting the weight of the ship. It'll fall over before the dock is fully dry.

Typically the port and dry dock are not chosen randomly as you mentioned but they go to the nearest one that has the availability.

Careful touching the paint under a ship as it is designed to prevent sea life attaching and your skin can react badly to it .

The Coast Guard cutter Iris (WLB-395) was dry docked and I had the same experience as this young lady. It's a pretty amazing experience.
