  • It's a tough job, but fortunately Brownells Gun Techs Keith Ford and Steve Ostrem are willing to do it! They're back at Rock Island Auction Company to show us two extremely well-preserved, beautifully decorated examples of Colt's first double-action revolver, the Model 1877. Unlike the beloved Single Action Army - the Model 1873 "Peacemaker" - the M1877 wasn't around for long. It had a fragile, finicky, complicated action that was prone to breakage and so difficult to work on that more than one gunsmith simply refused to work on them! The Model 1877 typically came chambered in one of two calibers: when it was in .38 Long Colt, it was nicknamed the "Lightning"; in .41 Long Colt, it was called the "Thunderer." The Rock Island pair consists of one of each, both nickel-plated, with impressive, nearly full-coverage engraving and Mother of Pearl grips. The M1877's double action operation certainly could give a fellow an advantage in a gunfight. Famous people who carried one included William H. Bonney (aka "Billy the Kid") and John Wesley Hardin - and Doc Holliday is reported to have carried one on occasion. The Model 1877 was in production until 1909, and about 166,000 were made. It was supplanted by the Colt New Police and, later, Police Positive models.

Beautiful little revolvers. I have one of each in my collection. They don't get fired much, just admired. I've wished Colt, or someone, would make a modern version of them.

My dad had a Thunderer back in the early 60's in 41 Colt we were not allowed to shoot since he only had about 40 cartridges for it. It was in very nice condition with one piece Ivory grips. It was stolen out of the house along with ten other guns while we were at his funeral in 1974.

I have one of the Colt Thunderer revolvers and I was really disappointed to hear how fragile they are considering “there are no spare parts”.

I have a Lightning Model. I've put a full box of shells thru it. I'm going to slow down on that...lol. But I LOVE the way it shoots.

I dont get why people say these are hard to work on. I have rebuilt several. Truthfully they arnt much harder than any other revolver. There springs are the weak point but there easy to replace.
