I knew I asked the right guy for a good overview of counter bored MOSINS. Thanks!

Thanks, Big Sam. I'm new to the world of Mosin rifles, and I picked one up this year for very cheap - a pre divorce sale as it turns out. My Mosin is in fact counter bored as I did exactly the same test as you did, and the bullet fell into the bore. This rifle has all of the markings of an ex-PU sniper rifle, and it's within the time standards of a 1943 build, to include a correct stock that has been repaired and brought back to "field grade".
No matter the reasons for counterboring, it's a great piece of history and it functions as advertised - with a bang.

Good info brother. I was told that the front sight just obscures the target so go ahead and just remove it.

Clean then from the receiver end. It's a little more hassle but much better for the gun

In another video of yours I recently watched, you mentioned the different stocks among 91/30 rifles. Could you elaborate on why a mosin would have a standard or laminate stock? I mean I know why, but wouldn't it have been easier and less costly to replace a damaged stock with a standard replacement? Why are they less common? When I first got in Mosins it seemed laminate stocks were everywhere.

The Russian in charge of the armory has to be cost effective or get sent to Siberia so the counter boring is the best way they were able to salvage their arsenal and it worked

My 1943 Izshevek isn't counterbored neither is my 1946 M44. But my 1925 Finn captured Dragoon is counterbored but it is a shallow counterbore probably 1/8 of a inch deep or 1/4 of a inch.

I lost all of my mosins in a tragic boating accident. But before then my counterbored 1942 91/30 was far more accurate than my non counterbored m28 and 1930s 91/30. Don’t pass up those counterbored mosins!

IMHO: The most common reason of messing bore is by improper cleaning using cleaning rod without muzzle cup to center it and constantly hitting rifling with cleaning rod.

Agreed. You should be using every piece in your cleaning kit. If you’re not, you’re doing it wrong.
