Thank you for a very helpful video. I don’t know why Breville did not explain this in their maintenance instructions as it is clearly needed. On my 9 year old machine machine I could not get the plastic cap off until I discovered that there are two small holes on the cap top. I was able to measure the distance between the holes, 5/16 inch, and made a little tool with a small piece of wood with two small nails set at 5/16 inch apart. With this I was able to start the rotation and then unscrewing the nut was easy. When I looked at the back of the disc I was amazed that it worked at all. From now on this is going to be part of my monthly maintenance.

It's not in their instructions because you'll get to use this for 10+ years, and that's not good for the bottom line of any company.
You actually don't need to do this every month but it's all up to you. I do it once a year and it's perfectly fine.

I have a 10 year old unit. Never had any real problems. The grinder seemed to have gotten stuck. I cleaned the chute and grinder like I have done 100 times. Did not work. I was looking around for a new one and decided to check the internet for a solution before I spent another $360 for a new unit. Found this video and my life changed, lol. I took the disk off in 15 seconds and sure enough, a lot of coffee rounds jammed and stuck on the disk. Cleaned it and BOOM, works like new. Thanks for this video. Took 10 minutes to clean it. I read negative comments on this coffee maker and find them hard to believe. Mine has been amazing for about 10 years. I only do a major cleaning about twice a year. I clean the chute about every 6 to 8 weeks.

Just junked my 2 year old Breville Precision Grind. It makes / grinds great coffee when it works. This was actually my second unit - the first was replaced in 6 months because the coffee feed was plugging due to moisture from brewing going up into the grind chute. Moisture/humidity 'travel' is the coffee maker's Achille's heel. Even in the replacement, moisture in the grind chute required scraping out 'blockage' in the grind chute every week to 10 days. The heat/moisture from brewing would also cause coffee to 'bake' onto the surface of the SS disk that is used to close off the grind chute during brewing. This accumulation is what I think distorts the rubber seals on the chute opening and the grinds basket, facilitating the migration of humidity into those areas.
The second issue just occurred, and I suppose it was predictable based on the humidity leakage from the grind basket. The display/control started flickering, going blank, losing the brew settings ,etc. Sometimes the display could return to function briefly by unplugging the unit, then plugging it back in. Since it was out of warranty, it was $145 replacement charge, which is not a bad deal. However, I had a Capresso Team Pro Plus grind/brew that was unused/NIB, so I just started using it instead.
The Capresso makes excellent coffee as well and while it lacks the controls of its Breville competitor, it also is a bit simpler to clean/maintain.

Thanks for your post, which helped save my venerable Breville BDC600XL. I was able to turn the nut with a 10mm socket, but the socket had to be not more than a tiny bit countersunk and with a lot of pressure applied to hold the socket on the nut. Before putting the nut back on, I turned it upside down in the plastic case because the nut seemed less chamfered on the bottom side. So it should be easier next time.
I had no luck prying the rubber cover off. It must be 10 years old at least. I finally attacked it with a Dremel tool and other implements of force. The motor could no longer turn the disk so it was either clean it or junk it.

However after popping off you’ll see the base is pocketed for the hex nut. Doing again I’ll just grab the entire thing with a pair of pliers and unscrew it. Also, If you decide to pop the trim too off I recommend seating the hex nut in the plastic washer before putting it into the threaded shaft. I just wish they sold bottom grinder burr replacements

@@automight1615 I love the machine, but never knew how to clean the back of the disk. I have used it for 4 years with few problems. Glad to see this video, since Breville kindly offered to 'repair' my machine for $149, and that is without even diagnosing my problem. Now I think this video just saved me $149. Thanks.

I have gone back to using a separate 20 year old grinder and changed the setting to pre-ground. What a joke.If anyone can give me tips to unscrew the plate, would be helpful. Thank you!

Not sure if you have a digital caliper or not, but if you do, you can use it to get some measurements of the part that the nut screws onto and order one online. Any major site that sells goods will have something that matches your measurements.

Has Breville changed the lock nut since this video was made? I recently purchased one Feb 2023 and the lock nut that holds the disc on is now a solid unit. I have other questions but cannot find any recent videos on this (for example is there a specific spot for each grind level or should the machine allow me to select a setting past the 6 level (mine does/)

I purchased mine Jan 2022 and the center cap looks like it's one solid piece but it isn't. If you feel with your finger, you can feel the very thin line that goes all the way around. Pry it off with something pointy or very small tip. I used something that was in my screwdriver set. My husband just did it and it popped off. This machine is great but a lot of maintenance. I know your comment is a couple of months old. Hopefully you figured it out already. If not, I hope this helps.

Problem is, when I got to calibrate the machine, it still only grinds about 9.0 - 9.5 grams of coffee and the lowest entry on the calibration input is 11.0g! Any ideas why it’s not even grinding the minimum amount of coffee for calibration? Could replacing the old burr with a new burr be the right fix?

Yes, it is still working and we have had it for over 10 years now. If you are very particular about your coffee then it is worth it. That's because of the grinder and steeping feature that it has. I haven't seen any other coffeemaker with that steeping feature. It does make a difference. I'm not paid to say any of this. Great job but i would say its a bad design Breville made, that Disc should have been a part of regular maintenance and cleaning at this point, and should have proper easy way of opening and cleaning, not everyone can do that but pro or hadymans, they probably did that so they can sell new units after couple of year, bad business.
