@daregularperson Yes I'm the painter. The paint is Cel-Vinyl from Cartoon Color and the board is Crescent Illustration Board No. 310 (cold press). I use an HP-C Iwata airbrush (mostly to wet the board), a flat brush for washes such as a Grumbacher Aquarelle 1", a Grumbacher "Badger Blender" and a good sable brush size 4 or 5. The drawing is transfered to the board with Saral Transfer Paper (usually blue).
I would kill for some updated painting videos for the new season of samurai jack... Even if y'all do them digitally. I love seeing how you guys worked. I'm grateful that the few you've uploaded here are even on here... That itself is amazing
The backgrounds in Samurai Jack are magnificent, and as shown in this video, painted with great artistry and simple elegance. Absolutely the BEST background work to be seen on TV, ever.
Wow, I always loved a LOT the backgrounds in the show and as an artist I was always curious to see how it is done. Thank you very VERY much for sharing these! It's an interesting technique and I just love the texture of the paper is used and the little decorative details you add are really neat. SO yeah i always admired these backgrounds
OH.. MY... GOD!!!!! This is wonderful!!!! I'm a art studen and I'm just dying here now thinking "THIS IS TOO MUCH BEAUTIFUL"! I feel inspired and wish to do something like that too someday! Thanks for sahre it!
I love your work truly inspiring. I make studies of your backgrounds to practise. Its so awesome to see you actually paint. I figured you were a fan of stencils and sponges, but the big badger blender, airbrush for water and the transfer paper were all new. Thankyou for sharing please post some more.
many thanks for sharing this , wow, so simple but still such great output :) Used to watch samurai jack as kid , never though id be going in to animation when I grow up.....
@nuttylamb My guess is he's painting with gouache. It's water based, like water colors, but it's got a higher ratio of pigment to water. It's opaque, and fast to work with, so a lot of background painters use it. I could be totally wrong of course. ;p
@renwaldo5 Very cool, thanks for the info on your equipment. I love your color choices. I subscribed, so I hope you will show us some more great videos!
@renwaldo5 I was just about to ask the tech side of your amazing paintings! I'm a fan of your blog, so nice to see you working. Very inspirational. I'm a student of classical animation at VFS, so you don't have an idea of how this is giving me a lot of ideas for my animated short. THANK YOU!
I know these are old, but I just wanted to thank you for posting these demos. Your backgrounds are some of my favorite in all of animation -- you've got some of those sweet HB painting techniques but with a really unique color sensibility. I was wondering how different the Cel-Vinyl colors are compared to like, regular-ol Golden or Liquitex fluid acrylic paints. Are they like, even more matte, like a gouache or casein? I'd give my legs to have a job like yours one day. Your work is inspiring.
I've found these on a blog, CandyCaneLand, and there's some work done in PS, would you share your PS brushes online sometime? And if you already have, can you link them? I've tried googleing them and found nothing. Thanks a lot in advance.
Yes, all the animation elements were digitally painted. The animation (and clean up) was hand draw on paper and scanned along with the BGs. Everything was composited digitally. This was during the transition from film to digital in the early 2000's.
Hello, congratulation you is a very inspirational artist, it's very cool to see your work process, some times when I watch I think the backgrounds is made in photoshop, and how much time you spend to do one ? and generally how much background is doing for one episode

A lot of this is actually really reminiscent of the process for making woodblock prints, which I guess is very fitting!
