watching some of your videos with tips all i know it's i must get pastelmat for sure to make my art better and more realistic ... as the paper i'm using it's clear not the best option for the result i want . so yeah gonna try to get that paper.. love your tips videos thank you for sharing! x
Thank you for thuis great demo. I always wonder if one should fixate a colored pencil drawing and frame it without glass? Or if one rather should frame it behind glass? Thanks
Thankyou, I've always just framed my coloured pencil drawings behind glass to be safe! I have been experimenting with the range of Brush and Pencil products with coloured pencil and using fixatives and varnish to frame without glass but I've had a few issues with it... I'll definitely upload a tutorial if I figure out how to frame coloured pencil without glass!
Amazing, thank you. I have always wanting to get into colored pencils, but I never could get that smooth coverage. The only product that was usually saw recommended was Zest it, but that isn't available in the states. I didn't even know you could use OMS until the other night. I wish I would have known that a long time ago, I would have been using it all along. I am definitely going to have to get some.
No worries! Yeah OMS is a life saver! And it's not that expensive considering how much you use 😊 I also highly recommend Pastelmat, it really makes so much difference! It looks a lot more saturated than using a watercolour paper 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt So is hot pressed watercolor paper the next best thing? I know the cold pressed paper I have has way too much texture. I was looking into getting some new paper. I have a limited budget and was considering what I should get next.
@@melsgalleria yeah I would get hot pressed over cold pressed! I used watercolour paper for a really long time before Pastelmat, and it still works well, you just have to be a lot more careful with your pencil strokes and try to get them smooth because you may see the strokes at the end 😊 I've used Fabriabo Artistico hot pressed watercolour paper and Arches "smooth" or "hot pressed" watercolour paper and they're very similar Just make sure you get the thicker one because the thin ones might tear/buckle a bit easier with OMS! There are also other types of papers that other artists use, like Bristol or drafting film, but I haven't tried any, so if the watercolour paper doesnt suit your budget, you could look into other types as well 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Thank you so much for the information. Currently I only have three types of artist paper canson mixed media, canson cold pressed watercolor paper, and strathmore tan toned sketch paper (80 lb). I have used pencils and alcohol markers on the strathmore before and loved the results. I just don't know how it would stand up to OMS. I actually ordered some Mona Lisa paint thinner online that I am going to pick up tomorrow. While they are running a sale on paper I thought I would pick a couple out to try. I was just trying to decide what paper would be best to get since I am on a tight budget and still learning. I have seen a few recommend hot pressed watercolor paper, some recommend the strathmore drawing paper, strathmore bristol board and then some that have used the strathmore gray toned paper which I have wanted to get eventually. Just not sure which ones would be the best for my budget. So I am trying to do some research before I go to the store.
@@melsgalleria Melody Ross no worries 😊 I have some strathmore toned paper but haven't tried it with OMS either! You could always do a test piece, once the oms is dry, nothing is going to happen to it, so you'll know within a few minutes whether it worked or not 😊 The papers you mentioned are all quality paper, it just depends what techniques you want to use If you want to use OMS, I would try and go with a thick, hot pressed water colour paper or Pastelmat because most of the papers you mentioned might be too thin for OMS But plenty of artists do coloured pencil work on all sorts of paper, however, they don't necessarily use OMS so keep that in mind when you make your decision 😊
Hello Kirsty, thank you for the amazing tips, it was so enlightening, helped me a lot! Thank you so much! Btw I was looking through your videos on Patreon, and I couldn’t find this specific cat painting, is it in there or not?
Hi Thiago, Unfortunately, some of my older CZcams tutorials are not available as Patreon tutorials as they were created before I started Patreon! All of my available Patreon tutorials are in my Patreon Tutorial Library on my website 😊
Thank you 😊 You'd be surprised to know that I actually went back to this video recently and actually cut out some of the times I said "oms" - so it was originally more haha
Great tips :).....never realised you could use pastelmat paper for coloured pencils! do you use white tracing paper on pastel mat or is it a free hand sketch?
Thankyou 😊 Yeah I use transfer paper in grey or white, depending on the colour of the Pastelmat I choose! You can freehand if you like, but Pastelmat doesn't erase very well if you get it wrong, so I'd recommend doing your sketch on another piece of paper then use transfer paper onto your Pastelmat 😊
This video is a hidden gem! Thanks so much for taking the time to makie it! Would anyone know if Pastelmat would work well with Copic markers? I thinking about giving it a try and applying my Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils with Copics.
You're welcome, glad it was helpful 😊 I'm not sure about Copics (I haven't used them before) but I believe they work better on smoother papers because of the blending ability? I could imagine that Pastelmat may even damage the tips of the markers!
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Ahhh yeah you're probably right because of that textured surface. Thanks so much! I just came across your channel, I subscribed for your professionalism. Anyways hope you have a great day!
No, you can use it on most papers that will take wet mediums (doesn't matter what the colour is!) I would try it on a test piece first, to make sure it works/doesn't leave stains/damages paper etc
What are you using to apply and blend the OMS in this video? It has a black handle and doesn't really look like a brush. The tip looks more like a little rubber spade.
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt okay, that makes sense! PastelMat does a number on brushes! I was just wondering if you had modified one to have the small point or what.
It depends on the paper I have used it on Pastelmat and also Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper and it works fine, but some papers don't take solvent well in general I'd recommend doing a test on your paper before doing it on your actual artwork 😊
I honestly do recommend Pastelmat (it's a very unique surface - there's nothing else like it) The paper makes a huge difference with pastels because you won't be able to achieve the same results on other papers, unfortunately! If you are on a budget, I would still choose Pastelmat and maybe get a smaller set of pastels (you can blend them to make other colours) until you can afford to add more pastels to your set over time Although Pastelmat is a little more expensive than other papers, it's 100% worth it in my opinion 😊 If you compare it to the cost of purchasing a decent canvas for oil/acrylic for example, it is actually quite reasonable for the results you get with it
How toxic is the solvent? Will it affect my breathing (I have chronic lung disease) and if there's that chance, shoukd I keep a window open when using it to be safe?
I will be making a tutorial about white highlights in coloured pencil soon, but this tutorial might be helpful towards then end! czcams.com/video/xA_Xhj3ogHQ/video.html PS: If you're worried about the archival quality of your work, gel pens are not archival if used on top of coloured pencil 😊

Can you use vallejo airbrush thinner as a mineral spirit? Or just paint thinner?
I honestly haven't heard of it (I don't use an airbrush) so I can't help there, sorry!
Does the solvent work on only white paper? Because I used strathmore toned tan?
No, you can use it on most papers that will take wet mediums (doesn't matter what the colour is!)

Yes you can add many more layers of pencil after using solvent/odourless mineral spirits to blend 😊
does pastelmat work the same as tan paper?
Pastelmat is a completely unique surface that is unlike any other paper - most other tanned papers are nothing like Pastelmat
