To Jasmine Huitron, this style has been called M-BASE named by Steve Coleman. To K Mack, the two others are Sean Rickman on drums and Anthony Tidd on bass. And this unit should be called Steve Coleman and Reflex, in which Steve plays with minimum personnel.
Not the best I've seen... but pretty damn close. Those who don't like him aren't listening. "To listen is an effort, and just to hear is no merit. A duck hears also." Igor Stravinsky
perhaps a bit overrated to say best drummer ever. you still have Roy Haynes, Rashid Ali, Chico Hamilton, Idris Muhammad. A small number of drummers to keep in mind.
Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Ed Blackwell, De Jonette... Jo Jones.. whoever we want. but this is realy IMPRESSIVE ... I would say shocking. not the best ever, I agree - such a thing simply doesn't exist...
Coleman and the various permutations of this incredible ensemble have been blazing new paths for quite some time, now. Bear witness to the evolution of bop.
great track... utter monsters, all of them. I see there's a bit of a debate about time sig vs tempo... reminds me of my favorite recent up-tempo 11/8 ... czcams.com/video/_nN61nW1Ly0/video.html
Heard this one yet? Interesting metal composition. czcams.com/video/edBhpYuh04Y/video.html Also, have you heard OU? czcams.com/video/mxKptoUNhrg/video.html

Actually, this unit should be called Steve Coleman and Holy Shit....though I suppose you could say that about ALL his units.
seldom heard in history, a trio like this .
There's a conversation going on here between the three of them and they speak in spiritual verses 🙏🏽
Literally the best drummer to exist ever

Interesting index finger only over stick for L hand orthodox grip.. Very delicate/accurate.
Not only is he a great drummer, but wait until you hear him on a guitar!! My god.

sounds like the same time signature as John Coltrane's "Vigil"....
Good observation he probably based it on it?
Vigil is 4/4 in powers of 2, only the first time the melody is heard on the recording it seems to have extra beats

Only Elvin Jones played his drums harder.
At some point its definitely 11 someting 11/8 I guess.
11/16
This is 4/4 everybody, just super duper fast.
7/8 ... it can be confused with 8/8 at this speed (and no: I couldn't count it: I jut saw Steve's score :) )
True, and there's a lot of syncopation going on.
an hell of syncopation :) really difficult to count it...

Coleman and the various permutations of this incredible ensemble have been blazing new paths for quite some time, now. Bear witness to the evolution of bop.
I would call it Post-Bop.
