In a cinematic first, this entire video was made in a single, continuous shot. Awkward. Goth. Tragic. Glorious.
I know, it's beautiful choreography and direction.
This song was WAY ahead of its time. This whole album was. Sad it got so much hate when it was released. Its beautiful. In the same way all their previous albums were masterpieces. Adore was art.
It took me years-decades even-to get on board with this album but now it may actually be my favorite of theirs
I loved the album from Day 1. This was the first Smashing Pumpkins album I ever purchased and I thought it was just incredible. A masterpiece of artistic achievement. My second Pumpkin album was _Mellon Collie_ which is very different from this one but I still absolutely loved it. And I've been a lifelong fan ever since.
"WAY ahead of its time". Something Depeche Mode did a few years before with Ultra
Hate? wow, I loved this song the first time I heard it and the video is awesome! I'm with you on this one Jordan.
She would love this entire album. Adore is an incredible album.
I'm torn between this, Siamese Dream, and Melancholy.
Agreed. An underrated album indeed, like Gish.
Indeed! Adore is an incredible album, itâs a shame people didnât âget itâ when it first came out.
The Smashing Pumpkins from Siamese Dream through to Adore was an incredible band.
@@Kravis63 For sure. ButâŠI think Machina and Zeitgeist are very underrated too. But Gish through Adore was epicâŠ.no doubt.
Adore is actually their best album in my opinion.
They are not just goth, or dark, they are a whole weird universe, every album has its own concept, every single album is a master piece of its own genre, the dirty weird and fantastic mind of Billy Corgan.
"This is how the dark heart feels" LMAO
Billy Corgan is definitely a vampire. Also, if you'd like to see a different side of the Pumpkins, check out "Tonight, Tonight."
The look is based on Max Schreck in the original vampire film 'Nosferatu' from 1922.
Yes please! đđ»đđ»
Definitely do tonight tonight
I think âRhinocerosâ is wildly underrated.
Heâs actually a nerd who loves wrestling. Lol
I love Lex's reaction! I've always felt like this album didn't get the love it deserves. They went from alternative/hard rock to goth electronic rock and it was everything my teenage goth self ever wanted. Some of the songs on Mellon Collie hinted at this goth vibe. This album divided fans. Some of them couldn't digest the new electronic sound they were experimenting with. Pug is another great song from this album, although I personally love all of them. Also the song "Eye" from the Lost Highway soundtrack is another fun goth-y pumpkins song. As a side note, I love that you guys are watching the videos now. I feel like it really helps with the interpretation of the music and storytelling with some songs.
I freakin' love Smashing Pumpkins. Nobody better in the mid to late 90's. "Tear" is also very good and of course "To Sheila". But their older stuff is phenomenal. "1979" and "Mayonnaise" are probably my favorites.
The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete is also a wonderful song from Adore! :)
i agree!
Haha, I love how I can totally picture Lex as both a sassy little pixie AND a brooding goth rocker. Seeing her adore (haha) one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands is awesome. So glad you guys finally got to this one!
EDIT: Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I always love how D'arcy looked in the Adore era. she made a perfect goth princess, no wonder I liked this video so much as a teen lol.
Pixie + goth⊠Lex could be a pastel goth đ And I thought Dâarcy was the epitome of cool when I was n high school
You're welcome, people!! I'm the one that was STRUGGLING to get this song on the live stream and it barely won. I am so glad Lex enjoyed the song/video. I knew she would. I think I watched the video over 1000 times. Still one of my favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs. They are truly unique with both their music and videos. Love em!
Haha thank you, Paul!! Lex seemed unsure about them for so long and whenever I watched their reacts I always was like âthis is because you need to listen to their darker and moodier stuffâ. Iâm glad it did resonate
Us pumpkin heads thank you so much. SP FOREVER! We are doing a top 50 sp song series on my channel. Spread the pumpkins love.
Thanks mate I've been asking on all their previous SP listens so I'm glad you got through in the live sessionđ€đ€đ€
Smashing Pumpkins were such a perfect band together, shame they couldn't get along. They were one of those bands you either got them or you didn't.....you loved them or you hated them. Personally I love them.......especially D'arcy, she was so hot playing that bass back in the day. Hope she finds the help she needs.
She looks gorgeous all gothed up in the "Zero" video.
One of the finest bands to come out of the 90âs. Glad Lex & Brad are covering them đ
The best band of the 90âs with the most beautiful bass player of all times.
Melissa Auf der Maur was the bassist at this time ?
@@osez111 naw, it was still Dâarcy Wretzky. Auf der Mar didnât join until after Machina was recorded. I believe she did a few of the songs that appeared on Machina II, but Iâm not sure about that
ââ@@ProsperoFinch yeah. I went to see them during the Machina tour. Melissa smiled at me. I was a child at the time đ
Half the time I don't know what Lex is talking about, but shecalways passes the vibe check.
WOOO.. more pumpkins greatness. One of the best music videos of all time full of symbolism. Corgan's vocal performance is amazing and distinctly him. Adore is a masterpiece of an album
Lex gets it,love this song, the smashing pumpkins are amazing
Dâarcy looked beautiful in this video miss her in pumpkins nowadays. Great reaction đđ»đ€đ»
She's still on the Michigan farm, I guess.
@@byerenny yes probably i hope sheâs doing ok she wasnât a few years agođ
@@SuperClarky666 yeah she popped up for a bit on Facebook around the time the other three were reuniting.
smashing pumpkins went, in both look and sound, from like grunge around the siamese dream era, to like some weird kind of neo-victorian for mellon collie and the infinite sadness, and this album (adore) was the start of their super goth phase, which they never really left after that
Absolute perfect description of their evolution đ
I love this! This is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song. Lex is awesome, always love her takes on the song's they listen to.
Their drummer, Jimmy Chamberlain, is absent for a stint in this era. He was kicked out. He and their touring keyboardist were doing heroin in a hotel room and the keyboardist overdosed and died. His name was Jonathan Melvoin. He was the brother of Wendy, the guitarist in Prince's Revolution band in the 80s. You guys just reacted to Sarah Mclachlin's Angel. She wrote that song about him. (In the arms of an angel is refering to shooting up.)
As far as I know Jimmy's clean now and back in the band.
Yep. And yes he is back in the band. I just saw them in concert like a week ago, and watched their 30th Anniversary Siamese Dream show. Jimmy is God-tier.
I can't picture Lex being a Goth back in high school... Lol...her reference about the Dark Heart. Sleep with one eye open tonight Brad...should you have any crooked teeth. ;)
Please dig into Siamese Dream some more! So many great tracks: Quiet, Hummer, Rocket, Soma, Silverfuck.
Siamese Dream has some of the best "wall of guitars" sounds ever engineered. Hummer is a particularly good stand out.
I vote for this too
Would love to see them do Geek USA, some of the best drums you'll ever hear on an album
Quiet hell yes....Hummer and Soma are massively complex songs.........the guitar solo in Soma is one of the best moments in the bands music IMO
Adore got punished for being a little ahead of its time. Solid album, with very somber and sweet moments. The B-side to Ava Adore is also great "Once and Awhile".
totally agree! well said.
i loved sp single cassettes back then. had the song off the album, and 3-4 b-sides. the 1979 b-sides were actually better than 1979, imho. Ugly, Believe, & cherry are 3 right up there with mayonaise to me.
"This is how the dark heart feels about love" love it
I've heard this song 100s of times and it stirs my soul every listen still.
There was a goth sort of th8ng going on I th e early-mid 90s. I was born in 75, I grew up with the change. Let's just say rock was still fairly new, still going through changes, discovering itself. The early 90s were an Incredible graduation from the 80s.
The power of music is great isn't it? It's pretty crazy to see how you're tastes have developed since you started doing this. I'd have never have thought Lex would like the Pumpkins and Brad would be obsessed by Bjork! Great to watch.
Funny, I just listened to this album about five hours ago - about the same time you posted this video. They released it early June of 1998. Their fourth studio album, they had no official drummer for this one so they reverted to programming drum machines (this was their routine from back in the very early days of the band, before they recruited Jimmy Chaimberlain) and so the album had a very 'electronica' feel to it. It's a very different album to the ones that went before it - they always progressed things musically with every album release - but this one had a unique beauty all it's own. Last one of the 90's too, very much THE decade of The Smashing Pumpkins.
Corgan has referred to the sound of SP as "goth-pop" many times over the years. On this album they were without their drummer and went very very much in that goth-pop direction. Id like to see you listen to some of their more intense heavy rock songs. theres many dark, beautiful, soft, and heavy sides to this band. My all time favorite SP song is probably Thru the Eyes of Ruby, for whatever my opinion is worth.
Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans is mine.
Such a glorious song that few people ever talk about.
Yes! Lex, Iâm so glad you like these guys. Theyâre such an epic and versatile band
I knew sheâd love this.. now react to the music video for âstand inside your loveâ. Gothic video with violin bows on the guitar.. beautiful.
great song, also "try, try, try" would be fun to see them watch!
That one is definitely my all time favourite of theirs!
Always did love Uncle Fester of the Smashing Pumpkin
I wish there was something more than a thumbs up for this reaction. Lex was a total trip!
Iâm really loving watching your reactions to the Pumpkins. Lexâs reactions are like all the joy I felt listening to them back in the 90s when they were my favorite band of all time. They are still in my top five favorites, though Iâm not sure theyâve done anything relevant since 2000âŠ
Yesss, Lex, you most def embody Ava Adore " this is how the Dark Heart feels " It's an electro-goth lover's lament....Def listen to song Stand inside your love from Pumpkins :)
Smashing Pumpkins is my favorite band. I love how excited she is over this song. So awesome :)
It's about feeling everything. It's really more about infatuation. The whole album is about all the types of love. A song about his mother, a song about his dog, it's all in there.
What a great band indeed⊠my favorite of all time and still putting out great music..
I still freaking love this song!!
Yo man, this woman is good with analyzing music and translating her impressions. Been watching a handful of Smashing Pumpkins reacts by them two.
MORE Smashing pumpkin please !!!!!! đđđđđđđ
I was a young community college student when the "Siamese Dream" and "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" albums came out, and they spoke to my inner outcast/malcontent/freak. I was rocking the black SP t-shirt with the word "Zero" on the front in silver, and the silver, hearr-shaoed "SP" logo on the sleeve, all through '97. I think "Adore" came out the following year. Good stuff.
Thanks for that one! Please check the Everlasting Gaze by them too!
MORE PUMPKINS đ
Love to see a reaction to Muzzle, one of my favorites. Love yâall!
The thing about goth love songs is that they strike this balance between love, hate, and sex. Ava Adore is a perfect example.
Hey guys what's up! Greeting from South Florida! The Smashing Pumpkins are so different from anything else from the 90s. totally eclectic! You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
SP were a new wave goth band BEFORE they were a rock band... listen to the pre-Gish stuff and the roots of this kind of sound are clear.
Knew Lex like gothy type music. She'd be dancing happily at those underground goth, punk clubs. đ Check out Killing Joke, Siousxee and The Banshees, Echo and the Bunnymen, Clan of Xymox ( underrated darkwave group), etc too. And for heavier stuff (gothic metal) Typo O Negative, Cradle of Filth, etc.
I keep saying Smashing Pumpkins are an acquired taste. But once you get it, it only gets better đ
I loved Pumpkins before this album, but this one is when they lost me. I'm a tiny bit more mellow now, but back then I was needing more metal. I always liked "X.Y.U", "Tales of a Scorched Earth", "Through the Eyes of Ruby", "Cherub Rock", "Siva"
this whole album is amazing
It really is. "To Sheila" was my go to in the late '90's when I walked alone through my city.
@@bogrunberger my first Smashing Pumpkins concert was when they were touring for this album. This album was very underappreciated when it came out, a lot of fans and critics trashed it, but now most fans will agree it's perfect.
Lex going full goth is always so goooood!! Had me rolling!! šEXACTLY!!š XD
Finally! This is an absolute ripperđ»
I can't listen to this song on the radio without picturing lex doing her little dance
they have so many good songs from the album- Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Lex will probably also like their song from the same album "Shame". Depending on if she is in a mood for something a bit slower, super chill, super atmospheric, haunting and gets you in some dark feels.
I love Shame⊠Have you by chance caught the Rock Am performance of it in 2007? Itâs very different from the album and somehow 1000% better.
@@jimmyninjapants3467 I will check it out. I rarely prefer live performances tho, sometimes I do, but it's rare.
Like in The Arms of Sleep.
Canât believe you FOUND this cool track!!! Lex gets it!!
It's maybe one of the most technical one shot music videos ever made, all shot at one speed, so the slow mo and him and moving fast is him not the film.... And he runs around the filming camera to get ready in the next set it's truly amazing as a one shot video
I hadn't watched the video before, so that added something to the song. However, right around 3:02 all I can think about is the famous Seinfeld line, "But I don't wanna be a pirate!".
Well, it made ME laugh. đ
Adore is and was an under-rated album. It's kind of sad that Jimmy (drummer) was so down the rabbit hole that he couldn't participate on the album, but on the other hand it gave the album a unique sound that sometimes just hits the spot. This album is a mood.
SP is a very unique '90s/'00s alternative rock! They are a mixture of new wave/post-punk/dance-punk, , goth, electronica , psychedelic/shoegaze rock band. They have a whole bunch of other videos yall should check out. They are still active and just made another album recently and on a concert tour right now. I think they'll end up in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame some day soon.
Modern day bands similar to them yall should check out are Silversun Pickups, Metric, Deftones.
This used to be one of my favourite band in the 90âs đ§ââïž
Man, it seems like *nobody* does reactions to this song, so thank you! I've never seen the video though -- can someone tell me if this was made during the brief period when Jimmy was not in the band? Or was he just "unavailable" for the video?
Jimmy was fired in 96 for overdosing (again) on heroin with Jonathan Melvion who was their keyboardist for that tour... Melvion died that night... jimmy was fired.. they told him he could never come back in the hopes that it would wake him up, make him take rehab seriously, and save him from the spiral.... it worked but they made Adore between the time when they fired him and when he came back to the band (clean and sober) in 1999. Adore is full of grief and pain and part of the grief is losing their drummer... Corgan also lost his mother and went through a painful divorce.. the band always loved artists like Joy Division and New Order anyway so it was the right pivot.. don't get a new drummer full time.. just make the electro acoustic rock album you wanted to make.
One of the best albums of all time. So glad to see people are still discovering it. Please review pug,Daphne descends and eye. Eye isn't on adore but got the same feal
He was trying to look like the vampire from the 1922 Dracula silent film, Nosferatu.
Wow never saw you two before but I loved her energy, her personality, her spirit. Just wowww such a genuine, interesting and intelligent person!!! They still exist!!!! This gives me hope. I love her!!!!
To be completely in love, so infatuated, so lost in someone that u love the good, the bad and the ugly of love itself. ...u can only understand when u have and feed off that chaotic toxic love. It makes you complete in some kinda way.
Just my opinion.
Billy Corgan can write a great pop hook when he chooses to. He just doesnât choose to very often. Iâm just speculating, but I think maybe he didnât want to become too mainstream. I wasnât goth, but I loved the Pumpkins. A lot of us did, but then he had his fans that wore the outcast badge, and they probably hated that we loved their band.
@x very true
Pumpkins were goth, metal, stoner rock, new wave, pop, lofi.. Pumpkins had so many sounds that no one group could claim them.
I'm a big fan of smashing pumpkins, but their best stuff (my opinion) was on Siamese dream and melancholy and the infinite sadness
I thought Gish was the best.
Gish
Gish was good, but you could totally tell it was their first album. Lots of good riffs and hooks but it was also a bit raw
@@dunny026 agreed. and the songwriting wasn't quite there yet.. corgan even said a lot of it was "psychobabble".. everything good on Gish is done better later... heck even a few months later Siva was a amazing BEAST of a live song.. it sounds so tame on the album. Listen to this live take from the Peel sessions that was on the Gish Reissue... I never go back to the studio version. czcams.com/video/JNv3qeh2OJ4/video.html
@@THEDEEPDIVE nice one, I'll check that out, thanks
Love this song. Heâs talking about dangerous divine reckless love.
One of the greatest (and most underrated) love songs ever. Singing his heart out
The facts they did this video in one take makes it even more spectacular! â€ïž
Loved your reaction to the Pumpkins-lots of GREAT music in their catalogue. Subbed to your channel-I always love seeing how people react to all different genres( the Pumpkins, Jinjer, Skynyrd, Pavarotti)-TRUE music lovers who appreciate all types of talent (wish I had even a little of that talent!)
I'd highly recommend 'Stand inside your Love' next. I think you'd both love it.
I will never hear Lex giggle again without hearing Brad imitate her
Lex!!! Do yourself a favor and listen to the entire âAdoreâ album!! You will absolutely LOVE it based on the Pumpkins songs you like.
This is one of my favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs, and itâs mainly because of the video. It was directed by Billy Corganâs girlfriend at the time and the design, artistry, and just everything is so cool and interesting to me. And Iâm a weirdo in that I was really into Billyâs creepy Nosferatu era. đ This song is about possessive, destructive obsession with someone so I feel like his persona in the video fits. They are one of my all time favorite bands and I highly recommend anything from them.
Side note: Billy has talked about the shooting of this video and how they went through the whole thing around 17 times before finally getting this take. Since itâs one single shot, there are no edits. If anyone in any of the scenes missed their cue or messed up in any way theyâd have to start over from the beginning.
Classic, classic 90s!!

Ahh what a great song. Always such a good vibe.
I love this entire song and I'm obsessed with the video. So glad you "got it" ! đ
Listen to Where Boys Fear to Tread next! đ„
You guys need to react to 'Tonight Tonight'. Probably their best song.
Stand inside your love by SP is the most beautiful love goth song by them... Bauhaus will be always one of the pioneers of Goth, there's nothing like Peter Murphy....
Lex you get it. Love you!
Stand inside your Love from the Machina album is brilliant too
My fav smashing pumpkins song for sure! it feels like 90s goth vampire vibe
Lex has great taste. This song is so fucking incredible
This song is beautiful and the video is a work of art.
âAll you need is Fuzz!â Love Smashing Pumpkins!
4:06 She feeled vampire power!
God, this girl is pure light....
Incredible song and Album and one of the greatest music videos ever made.
Lex is so effing cute PLEASE
Nice! Nice! Nice! If my son was born a girl, his name would've been Ava Adore. Best underrated album!!
Note: Please don't name your child after a song unless the song has a normal name like Layla or Beth.
@@mage1439 hrmph
Yes! What a great band!!
You guys need some Type o Negative I think Lex will love them.
If you love this one, I can also recommend "Eye" for even more creepy Smashing Pumpkins fun. :)
Creepiest they've done to date IMO is Glass and the Ghost Children, by far. Lex would love that droning bassline then the guitars over it. It's one of my out for a night drive playlist songs. One of those wish I had a convertible heading up the interstate with a full moon about right now kinda songs. Billy never did flesh out the story of Glass. He is reworking the Machina album so who knows...
