- When I start out with a new client, the first thing I do is look for any pictures of them where I think they look great. “Is it a color? A silhouette? An attitude?” I ask myself. Once we pick the looks that have worked, we talk icons and create mood boards. On this episode, I discuss this process, go into my appreciation of odd color combinations, and highlight a few women whose style I admire, including Debbie Harry, Sade, and Tina Chow.
I also FaceTime with my client Dakota Johnson, who loves a good mood board as much as I do. Mood boards, she tells me, “are like playlists for physical things.”

I got here from Hung's Chanel and I already knew I was going to like it... but. NEVER expected to enjoy it this much. I was in bed after cleaning out the dinner table, doing my "I am a tired mom" routine and watching videos half a sleep while waiting for bath time to put my kid to bed... and then I watched all your videos. honestly... I am still processing (in a good way). This topic is something I love so much... because I have a deep love for fabrics, and for design, how empowered clothing can make you feel... how it can translate who you are and what you want to express about you, even without words... I learned to sew, just because I wanted to understand the architecture inside the things I love so much and how they come to be... how a garment is so much more than what you see on the outside. Listening to you... made me get in touch with what I like and enjoy... ME... without kids, and house chores, and pandemics and all the years I am piling on... etc, so THANK YOU. Hi, Kate, this was fantastic and made me think about how I dress these days. I love glamorous clothes: fitted suits, heels, exquisite jewellery, dresses. I used to dress like that when I was a single working professional. Now I am a Mum and, often, my days are filled with work and then picking up children, children’s activities. I find myself reaching for trainers and flat boots and I do not feel myself. Would love it if you made an episode on striking a balance to dress functionally for your life while not losing the glamour. Thank you in advance! 🙏
