Ground Squirrel Pest Control - Poison vs Pellets [contains hunting]

  • This video describes why I avoid using pesticides whenever possible. By using a rifle or shotgun to remove pests, you prevent collateral damage (killing non-target species) . It takes longer, and is arguably not as cost effective. But, it is certainly works if you stick with it, and it is better for the environment, and much more fun than scattering poison. :)

    Okay. Folks, I was a biology major. I currently am involved in veterinary science and volunteer with my pets for animal assisted therapy. No one loves animals more than I do. But jobs like this are just plain necessary for the continued health of the ecosystem. Period. I know many of you get angry seeing the cute furballs get shot, but that's their lot in life. I highly doubt any of you would care if they were ugly.

    Obviously, they've changed their policy or something because your newer videos show slow motion again, which I love because I get to actually see where it hit, effects of the impact, and the projectile's trajectory. Without slow motion it's almost impossible to see if it impacted the animal fatally or just grazed it or was a near miss on an animal that might have ducked coincidentally at almost the exact time. I haven't watched your videos in probably 4 years and I'm glad you are still doing them. It's like coming home again. Lol.

    A few decades ago I was a caddy at an unnamed country club. I COULD have taken up golf as Mondays was 'caddy day' and no members were on the course. BUT, at that time I was far more interested in the 'shooting sports' and had acquired a Sheridan Blue streak. Since the course had a 'plethora' of 13 striped ground squirrels, i.e. gophers; I requested the caddy master for permission to 'reduce their number'. So for two summers, every Monday, while the caddies were 'duffing their way on the course' I was 'varmint hunting' and enjoying every minute of the mini safari!! (I enjoyed your recollection of your boy hood stalking adventures!)

    we do need to thin out rodent populations all over the US as wild life lands are getting smaller, predators are effected as well and rodent populations blossom,
    this directly effects people with growing illnesses and property damage.
    this is not animal abuse ether, we must aid in the natural offset by the animals that are not hunting in the populated areas.. keep up the good work

  • @Warhamer116
    @Warhamer116 Před 10 lety +19

    Good shooting there.
    Sadly i don't own (and don't really have enough money) airgun with enough impact to reliably kill the pests so i use 22LR. I often use guns more than i use poison since while not immediatly damaging, poison usage is doubful for berry farmer since it leaves taste defect for the berries.
    Also to the youtubers crying for the pests and demanding retribution, please understand that for many people, pests are directly damaging their jobs and lifestyle, and indirectly to mine. If no-one hunted pets at berry farms, for example, the price of berries would skyrocket since the harvest would be nonexistent. And that means industry must use more and more esseanses to emulate berries, leading to intake of even more bio-chemicals. And this is only on matter of berries. And if you just say "we can live without berries" then can you live whitout salad? vegetables? yes. What do you need then? Meat. Where does meat come from?
    What you are doing, activists, is something unnatural. That is going against the way of life, the way how nature works. Life is a cycle of death, and only by accepting it can you truly say you are natural.

Anyone who has seen an animal in the throes of organic phosphate poisoning would agree that these animals are getting the better way out...
    I've watched a few of your videos and find them to be interesting. You go about pest control with a professional, responsible and economical way of doing things. I do not see how people think what you are doing is gratuitous or particularly mean.

      it's not so hard to hunt without a scopes in real life, im sure on COD no scope might be considered a trick but in real life many people hunt without scopes. If you are talking about firing towards a squirrel without aiming at all with a scope or iron sights then you need to stop hunting because thats not a trick, it's more idiotic.

    • @followlilpumponinstagraman6632
      @followlilpumponinstagraman6632 Před 10 lety

      why use a scope and be too close and shoot the ground with a iron sight you hit the target.

    Does the pellet stay in the dead squirrels? Is it safe for cats to eat them if its still inside?

  • @Deadwindshadow
    @Deadwindshadow Před 10 lety +1

    What about the lead pellets, aren't those poisonous to the cats? I mean, i know the pellets probably don't stay in the animals body but do any fragments or residues remain on the animal's bones after a shot?

    • @Dovahkiin313
      @Dovahkiin313 Před 10 lety +2

      Lead pellets contain the element called state of California it could cause cancer but yes it could or could not be dangerous

    • @gazzmilsom
      @gazzmilsom Před 10 lety +1

      Yes and no.
      Yes being a heavy metal lead is toxic and its also stored in the bodies fat reserves so it doesn't go away.
      However unlike a high powered rifle bullet an air rifle pellet does not fragment and the weight loss of the pellet is negligible. Indeed rifle lead contamination is so minimal farmed meat can actually contain more lead than wild shot meat. And even if they ate the pellet it will pass right through. Issues concerning animals eating lead shot centre around water birds eating lead shot from shotguns alongside grit to aid digestion. Here as a bird may consume a lot of lead shot poisoning becomes an issue. But a cat eating the odd air rifle pellet would probably die naturally before the levels of lead it had been in contact with became toxic.

    Ted I have two different springers and I am no good at hitting anything with them.
    I purchased a QB-79 repeater from Archer air guns. I have been very effective with that gun to hit squirrels and birds. I don't think Archer is around anymore but my rifle is still going strong.
