ZHC’s achieving millions of views by celebrating art and style, but that doesn’t mean that his content can’t be better.
There are a few elements of the editing and storytelling that I think are great, and some that are neglected, which creates what I think are missed opportunities!
So me and Zach are going to talk about what works, and what we like about his content, and I’m going to be a cheeky little bugger and roast his content right in front of him.

No likes😂? Bro fell off 📉📉
It was such an honor to get my video roasted by you Hayden😂 Gonna implement everything you taught me into future edits 😤

dream high, fly high brother!
You are so humble 👍
this showed how awesome, humble and professional you are, ZHC! most people can not appreciate the power of great feedback. You rock!!
It’s crazy how much I learn from your videos. Your depth of knowledge is nuts. Breaking it down to the SYLLABLES?? That’s why you’re next level boss.
+1
couldn't agree more TubeBuddy.
I’m serious when I say, learning about Lickd was worth the watch by itself. I love when creators provide something of value within their ads. The rest of the video is great too 😁 thanks!!
👆
yeah, seriously. I'm looking into it now as I've never heard about it previously
me to, this is huge lol
It's criminal how under-watched this channel is..ABSOLUTE GOLD
Oh hi 👋
This Super Thanks amount comes nowhere close to the value you gave ME in this video as I try to pivot my channel into exactly what you described! Wish I could afford to work with you! You are a freakin' genius! Like, how in the world would I EVER find an editor as genius as you!??!
Yea hiller is great
@@Tajworks it's cool to see your generosity !!!
Duuuuudee your perspective on videos is always so refreshing to see! Can’t wait to see how upcoming creators are affected by your style/thoughts. Definitely feel like a lot of content is rinsed and repeated on yt
Facts!
I absolutely love these kinds of collabs. Always a goldmine.
I think something you do Hayden better than almost anyone else on CZcams, is finding ways to really bring out emotion and character in an edit, through very deliberate videography/storytelling.
Where you collaborate with big creators is always the most fascinating, because you’re not going through just the basics of editing, but giving a view into the abstract principles of storytelling - whilst using concrete tactics to describe how they’re done.
Again, banger video, can’t wait for more.
I love how Zach just listens and understands throughout without doubting any of hillier's advices, thats what makes him a really good content creator and helps him go to the top with lots of improvements. Hillier never dissapoints anyone with his work and etc!🔥
It's wild a video with 50 mil views has so much room for improvement. Love these roast videos so much! 13 minutes felt like 3
You need to make this a series with more creators videos man … your editing skills and insights which u share with us are amazing 🔥💯 Thanks for making me better in my editing 🔥
Series is imminent. Who do you think I should roast next?

Jazza already made this video a while back lol
In 10 years Hillier will be looked at as one of the greatest editors of all time. Mark my words.
He's the Spielberg of YT editing

@@foljs5858 fax. He's the Mr beast style kind of editor
The syllables thing was mind blowing, not that I can edit like this but I’m learning so much thanks Hayden!
Serious question: Do you think this style of editing (Mr. Beast style subtitles, camera movement, etc.) are overkill for a language teaching channel? 😅😅
Loll
Try it out and ask for feedback. Mr beast style is designed for a young audience. Copy some of it but try your own stile. The most important thing is that you idetify with your style as a person.
Yes lol
Lol not if you want to make millions
Copy the story telling from mrbeast
2 questions. Are we getting a full breakdown? (same as the Airrack one) and 2, is there any way to make a story that interesting that you created in the end without planning it before shooting? Thanks a lot 🙌🏻
this is a really interesting question!
Hayden has covered this topic in other videos and I believe this is how he would respond. He would say it is incredibly important to storyboard your video before shooting. If you don’t storyboard and plan you are shooting video haphazardly. Storyboarding allows you to plan your shots and be more efficient.
That being said you should still leave room for flexibility. If you are shooting in real time and their is new information provided you can either fit it into the existing storyboard or rewrite the whole thing completely.
So much value in your videos! I'm rethinking all of my upcoming videos from scratch after seeing this. Bravo!
I love the conversation about your "Why". It's so, so important. Well done gents.
Great Video! but i cant help but notice @ 9:29 that Hilliers audio level skyrockets right at the end of him saying "change"
The editors curse of unconsciously noticing things that seem off 😂
I learnt how to give a reason so that my audience do care from you. Thank you so much man! I wish I could take deeper editing lesson with you one day!
Loving these videos! Really makes me look at editing choices in a completely different way and gets me pumped for editing my next video.
THIS is the content I’m after. Amazing stuff
Amazing! Awesome work Hayden!
This is the most helpful video on telling story I have ever seen! SHOWING the section on changing the “steaks” was an amazing a-ha moment! THANK YOU Hayden!!!
That story you came up with was amazing, that video would have been insanely good
This guy is amazing, there is a lot to learn from him.
Love these videos next you gotta do this with Ryan Trahan!
@Ryan Trahan the people have spoken.

@@HillierSmith YESSSS!

This new chapter for Hayden gets me so excited! This was a wonderful video and I’m stoked for more of this!!
Bro u are amazing and such and inspiration, i honestly learn so much from these videos thanks you so much for making them and i hope one day when I'm big enough, ill sit down with you so you can raost my content lmaoo.
Amazing breakdown, your ability to put yourself into the viewer's shoes and fully understand how they feel whilst watching certain clips is amazing & refreshing to say the least. Do more of these!
The value in this video is just...incredible. So happy that I stumbled across your channel this morning! (and discovering Lickd is a goddamn revelation). Thank you!
had to watch another, thank you hayden
I have learned so much from "this guy edits" about rhythm but always felt a gap b/w movies editing vs CZcams editing one and you complete that so well ! Thanks mate
I love This Guy Edits!
Man your story pitch was so good, I saw the entire video without seeing it.
I don't normally leave comments, but I just had to say that this video has COMPLETELY changed the way I think about editing. I'm really excited to apply all of the things I've learned here!! Thanks for sharing, guys. :)
Ahhhh I love your videos. You’re so into editing, I can just see the passion you have for and how much you enjoy it. And so it’s very relaxing and enjoyable to watch your videos, obviously because they’re by interesting topics and because the great editing. But I also learned so much from watching your videos, and I’ve been trying to implement it into my videos! thanks and keep up the good work!!!
Just how CZcams has content that'll teach you how to change your oil or fix a patch on your drywall... it also provides these gems. Thank you very much.
This was such an inspiring video. I've watched your other videos and have learned a ton about story and editing from them, but this specific one has me rethinking how I produce videos on both my CZcams channels. I'm dying to find ways to tell better stories. Brilliant stuff. Cheers!
Really enjoyed this and learned a lot. Working hard to improve my storytelling and have been very inspired by your tips, thank you!
God I really love these editing breakdowns
Like I keep trying to study bigger CZcamsrs videos but it It so hard to learn some of this stuff!
Syllables?! Like I would ever even think of that, but it makes so much sense when you think of it
Thank you for making this video. A good editor is life changing. As a director / DP editing has always been super hard especially when it comes to my own reel. Your idea for an alt version to the video was baller.
so cool that you can still incorporate the 3 acts structure for content like this! I wish I have the storytelling skill like you one day!
Awesome video Hayden! Do you use the same storytelling techniques for shorts/ticktok videos or do you have a different method to keep people engaged?
everything you do is beautiful! thankyou man!
This video is amazing again! When I watch a video of you I immediately get a lot of motivation to edit again. Thanks for all the great video's!
same!
As artists trying to create engaging videos about our art this video was super helpful! The notes about repetitive montages OMG!! We totally relate to the challenge of finding the best way to show process (especially processes that take hours, days, sometimes months to complete) in an engagement way. Thanks also for showing the value of finding the story!
Ok this is a great video but I think Lickd might be what I’m most excited for 😮
Make sure you use my link ;)
Very cool how you saw the change in this clip! This kind of collaboration is very useful for creators! Beautiful clip! 👍
The way you took that video and reframed it with the story pitch was fantastic! Very compelling, and would make a great video. Awesome!
Your advice at the end telling him how you would do the story is absolutely incredible advice. Another great video with so much to learn.
Dude I love your stuff. I noticed you are starting to post somewhat weekly, pleease do!! You are such a genius in editing and I learn so much from your videos while also somehow being entertained lol. Thank you and I look forward to your next video!
Def some golden nuggets here, thanks Hillier! Keep up the awesome work and looking forward to hopefully more YT videos here!
I watch most of CZcams at 1.5 to 1.75 speed. Never a Hillier video. Always 100.
No matter how many of your workshops I've been to or how many of the videos on your channel I've watched I always learn something new from you! So grateful for you Hayden, you're truly the greatest🔥
Wow. That content is 🔥🔥🔥
Would love to see more of this.
a) One can see that successful youtubers also have potential left in their editing/storytelling
b) You point to missed opportunities
c) you give very insightful options and the reasoning behind those changes
Very very well done. Thanks
Thank you so much for all these videos. I learn so much that is actually applicable every time.
Bro, the emotional part at the end was EPIC! I'm learning so much from you mate, proper legend!!!!
that storytelling and editing skill, blow my mind
TQ for making this amazing video, shifu hillier :D
Holy crap!! I almost shed a tear on Hayden's story version of that video!! Dude, you are a freakin' genius! 👏👏👏
I love these series really learn A LOT from these, and I actually got teary eyes when hiller told his view of the story that could have been told
Insane how the little plan at the end was more entertaining than the actual video.. I mean that in the nicest way but it’s so true how much the emotion and character impacts the video
My goodness.. you are a gem. Your recreation of the story read absolutely amazing. Logan is lucky to have you.
That story you made up was insane. My Attention got laser glued to the plot. Going to try and implement some of that story element into my videos. Thanks man!
Your videos have been crazy educational but that ad was actually mind blowing lol when I first started watching and heard Oliver Tree I was like how tf is this dude not getting copyrighted
watching you break down issues of a video is astonishing especially since it is such a decorated creator
I love that I knew the Murder my Darlings was coming when he loved the Drone Shot. Happy to see this upload back again with the best editing content on the platform! Cheers Hillier
Hey Hayden, do you have an editing online course in the planning? I would sign up IMMEDIATELY 🙏 pleaaaaaaase
i’d 1000% hire hayden to be my editor
you are watching a master at work!
The amount of things we can pick up and learn through this video is insane, thank you for this type of content!!
I’m so happy any time you post! This is gold!
Loved the video, a point you talked about that I personally struggle with are the montages, and how to make them more interesting. Its hard to come up with 10 different montage types when you have the same process in every one.
A lot of creators have mentioned this to me. My tip is to watch a LOT of movies and tv shows. There are montages constantly happening in traditional media, and for whatever reason, new media is still stuck on time-lapses.
@@HillierSmith OH this makes a lot of sense, I always remember movies having awesome montages but it never clicked to incorporate them to youtube. I'm also wondering if you have any tips for going through a lot of footage, I've recently had to go through 70 hours and I'm still not done, I hate it. Thank you for your time!
I hope you're returning to VidSummit. This is absolute gold. Thank you.
Lickd changes the game, great video as always see you at VidSummit for round 2!
So much knowledge for free here, each video’s breakdown has lessons in it for every niche you just have to read between the lines, thank you for your content!
Perhaps the best video about editing I have ever seen before. You don’t learn from watching top editors, who showcase their art. You learn from “tear downs” like this, and seeing what does not work to its full extent, and how you can make it work even better ❤👍👍
Thanks!
Where can we learn more about storytelling, and when to start and stop music for effect?
I've watched most of your and Film Booth's vids. Which storytellers and editors inspire you?
Who do you recommend as an editor to critique the first 30 secs of my video?
I want to show my current editor what is possible so he can take it to the next level.
Justin
Love your videos. Learning so much. How much do you charge to go through video? Really interested
Love these videos!! Please keep making them!
Love your videos Hillier it’s the whole Pixar approach to content. The clue to a great story is “make me care.”
This was masterful and you make it seem so easy...because it is for you. Deserves a billion fkn views. Well done, Hillier 👏
This video has one of THE MOST masterfully incorporated brand ads I’ve ever seen EVER.
Learning so much from this channel. Great content!
Every time I see Hillier's videos, he opens new doors as to how to see things in a different perspective that you just wouldn't think of. Very inspirational!
I never even thought of some things, actually most of the things you said and it is really inspiring. Storytelling is a key and it is a great way to keep the viewers stay!
Very Very Useful Content! Thank you 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 ❤❤❤
Thanks for another entertaining and informative video, learning heaps from you! Really like the format of these.
really enjoying these breakdowns. Thank you man
This honestly was one of the best videos I have seen on the topic of video editing.. I would love to see what you have to say to gaming content creators and how to truly bring that type of content to a pro level.
Because I know my content has A HUGE streach to go which is one reason I have stopped so that I can go back to the drawing board.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Lickd was very open and humble. And we learned a lot of good pointers! We like how, instead of theory alone, it showed the differences if the principles were applied!
You and Dan Mace are two of the most creative and innovative video editors I enjoy watching and learning.
Just WOW! I learnt so much watching this. Thanks to both of you !
I´m hoping that you one day will show us your workflow and your art of editing from start to finish. That will be epic!!
CZcamsr`s timelines are soooo interesting to me
And roasting part as well
Im sure ZHC totally deserves his videos to be even cooler, so GJ
Love it, thank you so much!
So much knowlage in here, thank you so much for those super interesting advices !
"Giveaways" are quite tricky Hiller. The question of effectiveness is subject to what the intention or goal of the giveaway is. Thank you for the videos, you're shaping us creators and I love it. I look forward to working with you soon enough.
love it when u upload, cant wait for more videos
It's great to be back! What kind of videos do you think I should make over these next few months?
@@HillierSmith i honestly really enjoy the videos where u analyse other creators videos! i really enjoyed the Mr beast video and also where u get another youtuber on and roast their editing ahaha
So vulnerable story telling is a muscle… wow 😮we gotta get excited about this vs feeling so lost while doing it. Wow thank you for this!
Hey Hayden!! I love how you've taken your natural talent and methodically built upon it.
I was wondering....is there any way you could break down Matt's Offroad Recovery videos? Not the recent videos, but the first ones that went viral. They break so many rules and still get millions. Is it algorithm? Is it thumbnails? I dunno, but I'm sure you would.
