- One day while in Virgin Gorda in the BVI's. I was enjoying life, going to the beach, kiteboarding, and having fun from my sailboat. Then I watch an exceedingly wealthy man do everything I'd done, except..... less. And it dawned on me. "This guy is spending more than I make in a year, each week, and he's not having half as much fun as I am(he didn't smile much). So it inspired me to look at both our boat based lifestyle and make a comparison, albeit with a huge amount of bias towards my budget based lifestyle. But what I came away with was a whole new appreciation for my life. And the ultimate realization that my youth was my greatest asset, and something that no amount of money can buy. So for that, I am truly fortunate. Even as I eat ramen noodle for dinner 4x per week. I am truly fortunate. And would not trade my place with any old rich man, for what I have here and now!
It's my hope that this video inspires others to get out and sail or adventure while they still can. Or for those already on the water, to have a new found appreciation for what they have. And to cherish it.

What kind of washing machine do you have? Difficult when there's no washing machine with spinner if you are in the jungle always raining, we are currently in Kinabatangan River in Borneo.

People like you, Laura Landers, Delos, Atticus and the new comers Patrick and Michaela have made me realize one thing. I'm missing life as it rolls right on pass me with working every day. Great video Dan! After 19 years of living and traveling aboard, my wife and I sometimes forget just how great we have it. Something to think about, however, is that despite the fact that we all have a dark shadow, none of us needs to kill in order to feel alive. I have heard you mention it before how dead all the reefs are in the Caribbean. As someone who also used to identify as self sufficient, while endlessly slaughtering animals on the reef, I have to ask you: Is it possible to provision our boats (ours is also 38 feet) with loads of good food --and let the last struggling remants of reef animals recover from all of our abuse? I hope you're doing well after that bout of Dengue.
Lol, amd here I am in rural WV where the average income is $14,000 a year and thinking I would much rather have your boat then a yacht.

Mind you, maybe you already have it, but I would recommend you try and build up a little wealth for when you want to do something else. One of the things about all that time is that things change. You change.

Thank you so much for the video. I have been travel around US on my RV and planning to do it one more year. I want to be where you are after next year, but I don't know much about sailing. The plan is next year is to buy a small trailer sail boat like a Catalina 25. learn to sail on it for one year then move to blue water.
Excellent plan. I will be traveling around the USA in a camper with my twin teenage daughters in the summer of 2026. In 2027 I will sell the camper and buy a sailboat. I plan to live my retirement on it. I have sailing experience but you can learn most of the basics on that Catalina 25 you plan on getting. Best of luck to you and happy sailing.

I will always take the more simple way.
Don’t get me wrong I’d love to own one of the silent electric yachts but also being able to just enjoy life on a small budget that allows you to make memories sounds better.
One thing I’m thankful for is I am not materialistic. I downsize what I own all the time to only keep what I really need. Which will come in handy for the day that I finally end up on a boat.

Do you have boat insurance? You Said you do not need to ask permission from anyone to go where you want. Thats why i Ask because boat insurance seems to Be quite difficult to get For The whole caribbean For example
You don't need insurance living on the hook. Marinas usually require insurance. Insuring a 25k boat doesn't get you much, it's more like insuring your ability to get rescued if everything goes wrong.

Also you got your total privacy on your budget sail boat that is a huge difference

Mega yacht guy has to have a mega payroll for crew just to move his boat and keep it safe. We do not. Can you images having to pay for a Captain and crew every time you wanted to move your boat? Not only that but I believe something that big you got to crew it with a skipper and engineer every fracking day weather you are on it or not.

good analysis of the differences, but one critical difference is that a number of the mega yachts are full of hot babes and chics and good times. you're boating by yourself, can be sad and lonely even in "paradise"

A lot of Yacht owners hardly ever go out on the water. There's no time, they're off earning money. What a waste! The planet doesn't need people burning fuel and wasting its resources like building boats that they hardly use( or cars or whatever).
We need environmentally friendly people on this planet!

When I was cruising the best thing about the lifestyle was that there was NO comparing.
No one was poor, no one was rich, there were no classes. Sure there were beautiful yachts but never comparison just admiration and friendly faces where ever you met them.
It really saddens me to hear your comparison. I'd be a lot happier if you described the wonderful time you had from meeting the people from these beautiful yachts.

Meh two different vessels, two different experiences and safety features not to mention two different group experiences. I and the majority will choose the yatch every time. Video was comparing apples to oranges and tried to justify being broke.
