"IF IT WASN'T FOR YOU I COULD'VE SAVED THE WORLD!"
"If it had mattered to you, Luthor... You would've saved the world years ago"
That comment did destroyed Lex's mindset and it would either destroy or diminish there world views or make them rethink about everything they do
This was a better line than anything in the DCEU. A very powerful moment.
@@nikytamayo Picking low hanging fruit does anything but help your point. The DCEU sucks, this work stands on its own and doesn't exist to validate you.
One thing I personally feel the movie did better than the book was the ending. When Superman confronts Luthor, Lex throws a temper tantrum and says how much he could help humanity and save the world now, due to his newfound knowledge. In response, Superman tells him something akin to, "If you wanted and cared, you would have done that years ago." In the comic, this happens while they're having a brawl and Superman simply knocks Lex out while saying that, ending their fight. However, in the movie, that moment is calmer in comparison, and Lex is given the time to digest and admit Superman's point, seemingly hurting him. Here, the end of Lex's tunnel vision is explicitly shown. However, it's a tad bit too late. It's a simple yet very effective change and shows Superman's final moral triumph over Lex very well. Although, unlike the comic, Lex, as his last deed, does act upon this revelation and ironically ends up being the one responsible for the legacy of the man he hated being passed down to the next generation by helping create the next Superman.
Yeah, I like the way the movie did it more than the original comic frankly.
To be fair, the way the comic ended was moreso just a way to reinforce that Lex was a bastard who'd never actually have an epiphany.
While the movie preferred to show when it came to Superman his words would break Lex down more than anything else.
Both basically end with Lex failing once again, it's just the movie decided to let Superman deliver a softer blow that made Lex face the truth of his actions while the comic was a far more standard Superman and Lex dynamic where Lex will always be a stubborn egotistical asshole and Superman will always have to knock him down in the end.
@@Shift_Salt The thing is, Luthor changing post his last encounter with Superman isn't really limited to the movie. In the book he's hinted to have been mellowed out and somewhat humbled due to Superman dying and his words seemingly having some effect on him.
But that's fair. I guess I just like how the movie framed it more. It's more inline with the philosophy of Superman and shows why he gave Luthor all those chances all those years. And Luthor admitting it is somewhat reminiscent of the impossible riddle. Luthor's ego, the immovable object, finally surrenders to Superman's will and not giving up, which is the unstoppable force. It also adds to the whole thing that being Superman isn't really about powers, it's about doing the right thing. And Luthor could have done that if he hadn't been too busy with his petty one sided rivalry with Superman.
By your comment I can tell you didn't read the book.
I’ve got the comic right in front of me, and Superman does indeed say “You could have saved the world *_years_* ago if it mattered to you, Luthor.” We don’t get to see Lex in his cell after that, just a line from Quintum saying, “Even *_Luthor_* seemed to find some closure in the face of renewed global calls for his *_execution._* He seems so *_faded,_* so small, now that he finally got his dearest *_wish.”_* with no indication that he helped them clone Superman (or artificially inseminate Lois, in the movie).
I'm kinda surprised that the famous page with Superman comforting the girl who wanted to take her own life was cut out as well. That scene wouldn't have taken a lot of time, and it showed that no matter what state Superman is in regarding his health and no matter how small something is in comparison to everything, he still makes time to help everyone and be there for them.
It's the only thing I feel is missing. Everything else that was cut was alright and the movie's ending is way better than the comic's.
Both endings are good, the ending of the movie fits it's theme and the ending of the comic works for it's own.@@chrisdaily2077
it might be because they had a similar scene in the Justice League Doom movie, which came out the next year.
@@dynaguy3except that was a ploy by Metallo and ended with Clark getting shot.
@@thomasraines1396still literally referred the source
I really like the idea of Lex genuinely liking Clark for his authenticity. Even if he is someone Lex would deem as weak or irrelevant, he was always his true self. Something in Lex's ego and vanity, can't really see in himself. He's so wrapped up in his own pride that someone like Clark is actually something he's secretly envious of whereas someone like Superman is someone he believes he could be.
I think it's interesting that all the traits he likes in Clark are the same traits he hates in Superman. Because when it's someone weaker than him, he can hold them at arm's length from his ego, and treat them almost like a puppy. Amusing, precious, but not really relevant.
When it's Superman, though? When it's someone who outclasses him in every way? His ego can't take it. What he previously admired he now despises because NOW it's showing him that being strong and being kind aren't exclusive things. And if that were true, it would mean that he isn't some visionary man of the future, he's just a dick. And Lex can NEVER allow himself to be "just" anything.
"Look at this, Kent. Real muscles".
@@Argusthecat yeah, I love that lex and clark interaction in the film where he asks clark what would you do if you had supermans powers and clark says "help people" and lex responds "you probably would". lex is genuinley unable to believe superman would ever have this much power and not be planning something or view humans as beneath him but full heartedly think if clark got these powers he would be helping people and saving lives, aka what superman is doing. and just like you said it all comes down to one of them is weaker/beneath him while the other outclasses him
@@Argusthecatthat’s really interesting.
All Star Superman was one of Dwayne Mcduffie's last projects, it was released not long after his death. The loss of McDuffie was a huge blow to DC animation. Throughout Justice League, he was given more and more responsibilities until he became head writer for Justice League Unlimited. After that, he wrote and produced several of the straight to DVD animated films. It's very likely that Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett would have let him take over as the main producer and writer of DC animation.
He was also a writer in ben 10 alien force, I remember the first season was so good and after he passed away. The seasons weren't as good as the first.

I feel kinda bad cause my sister walked it while I was watching this and this is probably the only Superman thing she's seen and it was so confusing without context lol
To be fair, that's the quintessential Grant Morrison experience.
Honestly, as much as I like the ending I found the movie confusing as well. It introduced characters in a way that seemed to assume I was already familiar with them. It felt like I needed to have read the comic to understand the film. However there's a lot in this comparison that I don't remember at all, so I'm also wondering if I was somehow distracted when I watched it. I should try giving it a rewatch.
@@sporf_sporfThat’s how it is in the comic you just kind of have to accept it
@@sporf_sporf Well, yeah. The comic is a fan love letter, it's not meant for a new reader.
Meanwhile, Frank Miller's All-star Batman and Robin is... aaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh
That's a strong case of a label just being slapped onto something without care, Allstar Supes came first and really embodied the idea.
Batman was "Ehhh, well people loved two of Frank's Batman stories and everyone gawks over Jim Lee's art so maybe if we combine them we get a book that sells."
@@Shift_Salt to me it felt more like:
Frank: "Everyone looooved All-star Superman, BUT BATMAN IS SO MUCH BETTER! BATMAN IS THE BEST THERE IS! THE MALE HEROES SHOULD GIVE HIM THEIR POWERS AND THE WOMEN SHOULD HAVE SEX WITH HIM NEXT TO A PILE OF BURNING CORPSES!"
@@tyrant-den884 Why is this a thing?
@@kermitgotthesickkicks4265 Frank Miller sold really well, so he got to do whatever he wanted.
300, Sin City; basically defined modern Batman.
So he got to make a comic where he showed off how Batman was the best by painting a room yellow so he could teabag Green Lantern.
“dense”
“retarded”
“goddamn”
The ending with Luthor's realisation and speech is probably my all time favourite DC Animated scene. I love to just rewatch that clip every few months. It's perfect.
It's an interesting thing.
The comic feels like it focuses on the direct effects Superman has on the world. How his actions drive things forward.
The movie feels more like the effect Superman's inspiration has on the world. Where his example is the important focus, not his direct actions taken.
I'd say it's a difference in mindset between the people in charge, the former loved the ideas of what superman could do for and meant to society a strong protector while the other loved the ideals and inspiration he provides humanity to be greater themselves.
8:18 yes talk about beating a dead horse. They're worse about Jonathan Kent than Uncle Ben & the Waynes combined.
The worst part is they *always* miss the point of his death. It's about the fact that some tragedies not even the man of steel can stop
Very true in fact post crisis Comics is one of the few times or Superman's able to save and protect his father over and over again his father was supposed to die but due to Wave Rider using his time travel power on Superman right before it happened Superman had a chance to go and save his father. And this happened up until after the death of Superman at the hands of Doomsday where his father had a heart attack and thought that he brought Superman back
@@eliandervalderen5849 that's actually the cause of his on cannon death. After Superman pulled a "Jesus" editorial realized they kind of jumped a shark since "Death Saving Throw Automatic Success" was now in his power set.
It made things weird. So they needed a reminder both in universe and for the audience that Superman still had limits.
So they killed his dad and made it so he could never say good bye to remind everyone that eventually Death will beat him
Which is *really* Fxxked up when you think about it...
@@nicholashodges201 yeah that's a good way to look at it. Honestly I figured that comic book editors were like you know what we keep bringing these people back to life ever since Superman came back to life now we got to explain it. Did someone I know remember the Green Lantern of Brightest Day Blackest Night We'll have Blackest Night via zombie apocalypse and the only reason why the heroes Superman included could come back from the dead was because some villain from one of the old Green Lantern tells Comics is the Lord of death and he's been sending people back to trying to open the door so he could come in and end the universe.
Can you imagine what this movie could’ve been if they’d had an extra 20 minutes to play with? Instead of a 70-minute adaptation that left a lot out, we would’ve gotten a tight hour-and-a-half that was able to address more of the thematic elements of the comic.
Or it could've been a 2 or 3 parter like the TDK or The death of superman and reign of the supermen.
I dont understand how these stupid businessmen executives do not understand that putting a low runtime limit diminishes the quality of the story. Just give it proper sufficient runtime to tell the best possible story. why is it so hard for them to understand this
@@heisenberg2712 eh, tight budget. These are straight to dvd, not theatrical movies like Mask of The Phantasm.
@@projekttaku1 I see but wouldnt they be able to sell more copies if the story is better? Maybe they thought the slight increase in additional copies if they improve the story is not worth the cost of increasing the runtime?
@@heisenberg2712 I seriously doubt that they were thinking that adding 10 more minutes of runtime was going to increase the amount sold by anything other than a marginal increase. Plus, who even knows if it would've been better with 10 minutes?
For some reason the last speech from Lex when he finally sees how Superman see there world and universe and it kind of seems like Superman is awear of the fourth wall but decides to ignore the fourth wall to focuse on the here and now moments
Its more so that everyone seems so small with Superman's powers, so insignificant yet he still manages to care despite that. Its humbling for Lex who always saw himself as so grand and beyond everyone to realize that there's not much separating him and the common man.
I actually love this movie. I think Dwayne McDuffie did a great job interpreting the story into a 70 minute movie that has incredibly powerful moments. The point where Lex sees the world as Superman does is one of my favorite Lex Luthor moments of all time. Christopher Drake’s score is so moving and fits this Superman perfectly.
I just wish they didn't cut out alot of the context that made the comic so good.
@@tylerbertram7065there's ultimately only so much you can do with 70 minutes and a budget.
But a tv series covering more of the Allstar superman stuff would've been greag.
@Shift_Salt I guess they could've made it into a two or three movie similar to The Dark Knight Returns, Death and Reign of Superman, The Long Halloween, and Crisis on Infinite Earths.
It's my favourite superman movie. My only gripe is that lois doesn't know who is superman is, she seems to only like superman and not clark, and that clark himself doesn't seem like a person and is instead just a disguise.
It is certainly a difficult balance though, creating a witty and likeable person that feels like his true self, and creating someone that his coworkers won't suspect is superman. But given that the latter is basically an impossible task bc they can just compare both of their faces, i much prefer it when they focus on the latter.
@@tylerbertram7065back then, they weren’t really doing 2 parter animated movies. One 70 minute movie was all you were going to get.
Just as a very side note, Superman in Latin American Spanish is such a delight he sounds way kinder, concerned and idk for me that is superman's voice
We always get good voices here.
All Star Superman: A Modern-Day Retelling of the 12 Labors of Hercules.
That stuff with Solaris around 11:30
I think that's emblematic of why I feel like there just haven't been any good Superman movies lately. Actually, I feel like it's an overarching problem with a lot of people writing Superman.
The natural instinct is to give the character flaws and let them do not-ideal things and humanize them. And for a lot of characters you want that. The story is about them it's about them working past those issues or coming to grips with those not-so-beneficial parts of themselves that can't be changed and either saying "I can stop" or "I can't stop but I can change how I react" and that's how it works.
But Superman stories aren't about Superman.
You don't want Superman to be humanized and flawed like that, I think. Superman being super is kind of the point. He actually is just better than everyone else. He always does his best, and his best is usually better than can be expected of any human being. For a regular story this is a death knell because a perfect character can't learn or change or grow... But Superman's not a character. Superman stories aren't about Superman. They're about how he effects the people around him, they're about how despite all the bullshit physical DBZ-tier laser eye blasts and super-luminal flight and invulnerability, what really makes Superman effect change is his relentless, boundless optimism, his positivity, his ability to be more Good with a capital G than anyone else. The powers just support that.
So when you have Superman say something like "I think I'm all out of mercy", it feels off, because that's not what Superman's about. Superman's supposed to be an infinite font of mercy, and the wisdom to apply it where needed. The story isn't about Superman punching out this giant sun-virus thing, it shouldn't be about how sad he is that Lois got Covid and died or whatever, it's not about Krypton's weird over-represented influence on a kid who never saw it; it's about Solaris being effected and changed because of Superman just being himself. It's about how striving for that boundless optimism isn't naive or bad, it's objectively a good thing, and people should try to match Superman and be better people, more forgiving people.
Superman stories aren't about Superman, they're about us, and how our ideas shape us.
Superman is super yet being a god he realizes he cannot do everything due to being held back by time. Even knowing he can't save the world he still saves the world. He doesn't become a ruler because that isn't his job, his calling. He's there to help how he can and to inspire those around him. Which is in theory the human ideal of life. Yet too many people do not understand DC and just want to dump their bitterness and trauma on a page and demand people like it.
That "I love Superman" with the snort, made me LOL so much. Great video as always
This was one of my first introductions to Superman so it very much holds a special place for me. I'm glad despite despite the cuts this film still had the spirit of the comic.
"Ok so what are we thinking for the character designs for this movie?"
"Have you seen Sponge Bob 'The Two Faces of Squidward'?"
I honestly enjoyed the All-Star Superman movie, even though it cut some content from the comic. I will admit that I wish that Superman saving Reagan in the comic was kept in the film, but the film is still great and respects who Superman is and what he stands for. The All-Star Superman film makes Superman an inspiration and makes him someone who would be missed if he was gone.
Thing is, in the movie, the only reason Lex says he likes or respects Clark over Superman, is cause he isn't threatened by Clark. He still sees himself above Clark, the entire time he's complimenting him and "respecting" him.
Just when I'm about to go to bed, IP drops a neat gem.
Both of these are good, the comic and the movie. They definitely have different themes, and the differences between them show that off well.
I really like this, using your own words to talk about a work instead of stapling it to some philosophical or storytelling framework. It feels more genuine and personal. I actually haven't been watching most of your stuff for a while because hearing you analyze a story though the lens of The Hero's Journey or The Stages of Grief just gives it this detached, clinical feeling.
So, in the comic, Superman knocks out Lex just before the part he says (in the movie) “You’re right,” right? I think, then, the mercy Superman shows to Solaris isn’t cut, it’s shifted to Lex. Which makes sense, cuz there’s not much they can do to explain how Solaris, a seemingly alien supercomputer that’s been a non-entity in the story thus far, is anything beyond artificial life that can be safely reprogrammed or rehabilitated.
I think the idea was just "It's Lex Luthor, he's always gonna be an asshole and the worst of humanity."
Plus, these kinda stories are usually just as open to giving alien/in-organic life forms a chance as much as regular people.
I'm kind of glad that I read the comics rather than watch the movie from what you say with like half the story cut out and then changing that key seen with Solaris it's a completely different story almost
this is seriously the best youtube channel ive found, it seems like he puts his soul in every video he creates. Love it
All-star Superman gave me hope once upon a time, and remains one of the best, and most faithful, displays of Superman's virtue and character.
This comic and movie are examples of how you can approach the same story from different angles, and get two great, but very different, results.
The thing about our world and us creating our own superman moved me to tears😭
i'm crying man superman's so cool
I love how the movie adapts what it does keep, but yes what’s absent is missed. Really wish this one got the two parter treatment that these films got into doing later with TDKR and Long Halloween
Issue 10 is the single greatest Superman issue of all time, the literal heart and soul of All-Star, and the movie omits the entire thing.
This movie is what made me respect Superman to an extremely high degree
The best Superman death of all time

Well done!
I'd recommend people who enjoyed All-Star Superman read Tom DeHaven's Depression-era "It's Superman!," which has a lovely stumblebum style, with richly-imagined, wrinkled characters (and a great Jonathan Kent). Elliot S! Maggin's "Last Son Of Krypton" gives its strong characterisation a bold-line Silver Age stride, informing (if not inspiring, perhaps) the superhumane spirit of works like All-Star Superman. To me, these form a lovely unofficial life story trilogy, although I suppose you could trade Maggin for Superman II if you wanted them all to come from different media. I can't actually remember if I've seen this adaptation - probably in fragments through excellent videos such as this one - but I do know that while excising the creation of Qwewq is a shame, erasing Bar-El's Scottish accent is a crime.

I tried to watch this when it first came out and couldn't get past the prison riot scene. Not only did they have Superman passively allow people to die by staying in disguise during Parasite's rampage, he actively killed people by freezing them in the giant monsters path and letting them be shattered. I Turned it off immediately. Then I found out later that they cut out Superman stopping the girl Reagan from jumping, which is one of the best Superman moments of all time. Massively disappointed, maybe I'll try again.

I am here just to say, i love your videos. They are fantastic and the mensages are beautiful.
I know that many people like the lex Luthor redemption arc in movie, but I feel that the folks are missing something about Luthor/superman conflict arc in the comic. In the comic, some people interpret it as just another superman punching the bad guy senario with little/No substance in it. But, I feel completely different here. As I see it as a tragedy tale for lex & Clark's rivalry. And the funny thing is tragedy comes from Superman slide of the story here as he regrettably fails and gives up on luthor 's possibility of redemption. After giving him so many chances to redeem from villainy in their history. The final punch that superman gave lex was the last indication suggestively saying Screw you! I don't care about our beef anymore. See you and good riddance.
