EPIC FAIL? Is Sideshow's Christopher Reeve SUPERMAN Statue A Major Disappointment? After seeing some in hand videos, and photos from collector Stewart Murray, I wanted to comment on this premium format statue release from Sideshow. I think the body and costume look incredible, but I'm really disappointed for collectors that purchase this expecting prototype quality, but end up with this horrendous seam line on the head sculpt. Should Sideshow be more responsible to their customers in releasing something like this??

I'm not a Superman fan, but I feel for those who pre-ordered and were stoked about this. This is actually downright... insulting to the fans, plain and simple. If I didn't know any better, I'd have thought this was a bootleg.
It's just shocking as this had the potential to be the definitive Reeve Superman!!
I'm not one to cancel preorders but I would on this for sure - no sleeping on it necessary

It's actually shockingly bad for this day and age at this scale and price point. This is the standard they were pumping out about 15 years ago. I think the last one I saw at this scale and price point that had seam lines like that must have been at least 8 years ago. Statue companies are way beyond this standard now. Something seriously wrong must have happened in the factory that wasn't caught before they pumped all these out which means that not only was quality control lacking, it was absent entirely.
That’s exactly what us collectors want. Upfront honesty on a product. Good or bad. Appreciate the review.

I'm a HUGE Superman fan. HUGE Christopher Reeve fan. I had this on preorder. I had a spot available in my collection reserved for it. I canceled after SDCC. I will not buy this. The quality issues are unacceptable, especially with all the delays it had. Thanks for doing this video!!
I would love to know who at Sideshow looked at the production piece and said "yep..looks good to me...." This person should be fired and they should hire Trever Grove or K.A.Kim to re do the likeness... but we all know it will not happen :(
I think Chris himself would have been disappointed with the absolute crap quality of the new statue, tbh. He would have said we fans deserve better. He never half-assed anything he did, but apparently that's what happened with this piece. Someone half-assed it with the quality of the symbol on the back of the cape, the coloration on the face, and that atrocious visible seam between the head and the top of the neck. Absolutely disgraceful, and I see it as an insult to the greatest Superman there ever was or will be.
My guess is that they tried to retool the face sculpt late in the game based on all the negative feedback and didn't have time/funds to recast the entire head portrait so they went haphazardly in this direction. I can't really figure out otherwise why they'd produce something with such awful seam lines.
You're 100% right Chris. It looks bad. Very bad. Sideshow unworthy. Like they accidently put out the first ever prototype and not the final product. I just can't imagine that some folks at Sideshow are scratching their heads right now and wondered what happend here??!!!
I agree with you, it is unacceptable. And I guarantee that if Chris was still here he would say the exact same thing. He'd likely want to have a word with Sideshow Collectibles about those two aspects of the new statue, and ask that they do better next time.
If everyone that gets this would return them it would stop companies from sending out junk like this.

I think Sideshow definitely owes us a explanation on what the Hell happened with this piece. . Who and why would anyone in the company let this get by? I definitely should have cancelled mine.. unfortunately I'll have to wait and hope someone makes a custom head Sculpt to replace this MONSTROSITY! This truly makes me believe Sideshow doesn't care about their customers!
When you show me the S on Superman's cape I nearly fell down the stairs. My mind instantly had 3rd grade flashbacks 😩

I regret pre-ordering it SOOOO much! The more CZcams videos/pics I see of the final product, the more sad I get. There are just too many flaws to call it 'acceptable'. I payed 680 Euros of my hard earned money... It's just a shame and Sideshow has lost a lot of reputation in my eyes. Weird that from the side resembles exactly Christopher Reeve but when you look frontal looks indeed like a mix of superman actors...
Totally agree.. what a disappointment! When Sideshow first revealed this way back the head sculpt and likeness were pretty spot on! And I was looking forward to adding this Superman to my collection. I do have the Christopher Reeve standing atop the American flag pole from Superman II which is outstanding for the price back when I bought it. I would've sold that and moved to this if it wasn't such a crap turnout on the head sculpt! So yes, I agree for the price point and where we are today with these, it's unacceptable and sad. Hopefully, down the line there's a better version for fans and collectors.✌

The quality of this statue is seriously a joke. That stitching is hilarious and how was this even green-lit is beyond any comprehension…
I pre ordered mine on day 1. I loved the prototype. I wasn't too worried when the "iffy" images started to come from SDCC, because I know that it's hard to take a good image of a statue that properly does it justice. But I'm not going to lie, I'm really starting to regret ordering this piece. With any luck I'll like it a bit more when I get it in hand, but it's certainly not one I'm looking forward to any more, and I'll certainly think twice before ordering another Sideshow Movie PF.

I agree, this is like action figure quality, not a high end piece
The likeness aside, the seam if it had to be there could have been done so much better, it could have followed the hairline at the back and side of it and then behind the ear leaving only a line from the bottom of the ear down they could have lowered the join to follow the crease mark in the skin that's just below where the jawline is currently, it's sloppily conceived in the first place. The Superman 'S' emblem on the back is shoddily done. If I was a Superman or TV piece collector and got this I would be bitterly disappointed, and it's not like they didn't have time to fix this, what with all the delays, I really feel for those who pre-ordered this, I'd advise anyone who can to cancel their order.

I cancelled my order because of the head sculpt I was excited when it was first introduced but disappointed by the head sculpt
With so many Reeve statues out there to choose from they have to do better here. I wouldn't accept this statue in my collection the way it is. A real shame as Reeve is the Superman I grew up with.
He is so beloved, so it's hard to see it come out this way.
The front S emblem looks cheap and should not be plastic but same material as the blue jumpsuit. Ridiculous.
This stuff always seems to happen to Superman and I don’t know why. Happened with the recent Sideshow Superman bust too where it was clearly of lower quality than the Wonder Woman and Batman ones.

Finally someone saying the truth! I want a Christopher Reeve statue badly and I wouldn't pay a $100 for this garbage. Shame on them, I honestly don't know what they were thinking. And I love most Sideshow pieces, but I still can't believe they released this. Totally unacceptable!
Chris, I couldn't agree more! I so wanted this piece. I'm glad I didn't pre-order. It's disappointing that Sideshow let this get produced like this. Where is their QC? I wonder, do they produce all 6000 at once? What are they chances they stop production and redo?
They often do batches, so with a ES like that I would love for them to retool!!
I normally wouldn't advocate for this, but as a highly disappointed owner of this piece, I'm hoping some fan group releases a portrait compatible with this statue. They'd likely be able to sell 5, 000 +
I am very disappointed in this statue, I'm still keeping it because it's Christopher reeve but if this was any other character I would be returning it. This was the first statue I ever pre ordered from sideshow 2 years ago and the wait (and the money) was just not worth it. I still the prime 1 Arkham batman and tweeterhead krypto on pre order and then after those come in I'm definitely taking a break from statue collecting because if this superman statue is a sign of things to come then I don't want to be a part of it

Sideshow Collectibles absolutely dropped the ball with this one. The head sculpt, cape, and seamline are awful. For a piece that ends up costing over $600 with tax, there is no excuse. It's a major disrespect to Christopher Reeves and to every Superman fan out there. The Tweeterhead Superman Maquette is almost half the price, and it looks much better than Sideshow's massive disappointment. Sideshow Collectibles have a habit of taking liberties with their releases, and at times, its for the worst. This statue is a prime example. Thanks as always for another wonderful video! This is horrendous. The bottom of the S on the front is raggedy, and the one on the back is unspeakably bad. The seam line on the neck and the mold line from the sideburn are just unreal. I would return this if I had purchased it. Between pvc heads and mixed media clothing, can they even be called statues anymore?
I bought it. Received it and saw the head seam and was disappointed, but that S on the back of the cape was a major disappointment. I think junior seamstresses can cut out and sew a better emblem on his cape than this factory put out.
And it was delayed! I was thinking it was delayed due to QC issues. Absolutely not. Worth $150 at the most. I returned it immediately

I had this on pre-order than cancelled after seeing it in person at San Diego Comic Con. What's funny is that I never even noticed the seam under the chin. I couldn't get past the face sculpt. It just doesn't look like Reeve to me. Super disappointed on this one. Sure, I took a hit on my deposit but better than spending $600 for something that I know I wouldn't be happy with.
Comparing it to the prototype images. The "S" on the cape is passable as it does look pretty much like the product photos, but that neck seam is completely unacceptable as it doesn't exist at all those pictures.
The neck seam is really bad. But a lot of people overlook the sloppy paint application on the excellent head sculpt.
apart from the head and the back logo, the chest logo is not really accurate. very close but not the same. if it supposed to be christopher reeves, then they did a terrible job. i see the resemblance but that is not him. ghawd, it could have been amazing figurine.
I’m glad you addressed this. I unfortunately had to cancel my order. Photos they showed at preorder were very different to the end product. Premium product with premium price tag so I’m expecting a premium Christopher Reeve. Very disappointed. I REALLY wanted this.

You said it perfectly and you take on it is spot on. I’m shocked as well by the face sculpt, the seam and the emblem on the back of the cape that looks like it was drawn free hand by a very amateur artist. This piece doesn’t belong in the Sideshow family and honestly I can’t imagine them not being a little embarrassed by this. It almost seems like a joke that they released this and will say “just kidding” at some point. Sadly, to your point, the reality is probably that they do in fact have a ton of inventory and I can’t see any collector wanting to own this.

Absolutely shocking. We are way past the point of statues looking like action figures.
Keeping the head separate from the body probably made it easier for production. They could have easily put the seam below the fabric, somewhere though. The fabric is terrible, big step back. And I agree, it will be sitting in the warehouse for atleast a couple years.

@@BatmanStatueCollector me too. The biggest issue( besides the delay) I could see was the paint. It looks like they altered it some from previous photos in the beginning to later photos. I’m a first time buyer of Sideshow, so I had no ideas what to expect. The delayed bothered me a lot. I was expecting things thing last Christmas lol. I think they can and should be more transparent with why they’re delaying. And when I said that in FB forums, I got trolled for it. Most said it was the norm. But when I pay this much for a piece, they should be transparent. The last statue I bought was Alex Ross KC Superman LONG time ago from DC direct.
We know the Reeve's Superman was from the 70's-80's era but it looks like Sideshow had achieved the impossible to create a product with such low quality that's actually from 80's. Wow look at that paint job and that seamline by the jawline from the castings.... what a new low for SS and comparing to other manufactures nowadays, SS better off just do wholesales/Retails... Next level stuff right there
obviously you don't know Reeve's face as collectors do. That one looks like Hugh Grant, but never like Reeve.

I'm not a huge Superman fan, but when this piece was first advertised (prototype, not the end result), I was interested in buying it. If it turned out well, I very well might've gotten it.
The paint application on the face (the only part that matters, since the body is mostly fabric covered) is pretty mediocre. The heaviness of the eyebrows is a major distraction even from a distance. His eyebrows simply didn't look like that, and it reduces the overall likeness.
The jaw/ear seams are deplorable. I took a close look at pictures on the Sideshow site, and I do think I can see them. But they're much fainter. Also, many of the close-up shots are taken at a perfect angle/lighting to obscure the seams.
It's one of those things where, unless you knew what to look for, you wouldn't notice it in the Sideshow pics. But I'm sure, if people try to return the statue based on false advertising, Sideshow will say, 'look, we didn't hide the seams!' Even though they kinda did. Legally, I guess, they didn't. Still feels borderline fraudulent, however.
$600 BUCKS!!!??? Holy crap! I thought this was $300 ish. For $600 that thing had have a single flaw on it. How the hell do they justify $590 for this thing in the first place?? ...and what nutcase collector is gonna pay for that? No wonder collectors have destroyed the toy and collectable markets paying crazy prices for awful products.

I rsvp'd this.. but couldn't pull the trigger, sculpt is too far off.. the seams as well are bad. Love the suit.. really sucks that all I still have is my HT 1/6 figure.

Of all the characters I love, Superman the movie was on top of my list and when I heard Sideshow was doing a new Premium Format, I was so freaking happy... Not being able to afford a lot, that was one I wanted for Christmas... but...wow.... what a let down...from a company I have been a customer for years... I have never seen such a bad customer quality control fail like this one. I settled on the not so great portrait and loved the outfit but how in the world they thought it was okay to deliver a piece with a HUGE seam on the neck??? They never do that... what happened? And that "S" on the back??? Really? I'm glad you made a video out of it because people watch you and companies rely on your feedback and I hope this will be the last time something like this happens... Unfortunately I canceled it and I hope that something better will come in the near future... Thanks again

This is shockingly bad. It’s unlike sideshow to put something out like this. This shouldn’t tarnish their reputation in my eyes as this is an extremely rare occurrence (for a statue to be this bad). Nonetheless this never should have happened and I feel bad for those who ordered this Superbad statue.

I remember when ssc produced the Gal Gadot WW PF. I had high hopes for her and when I saw the production piece, I was so disappointed. Luckily I was able to cancel that statue.
This Superman and the original PF was just awful to begin with. For some reason, they suck at movie head sculpt.
You should NEVER bite your tongue in the statue world. Pieces cost way too much these days to let stuff slide. Open and honest reviews/critiques are preferred.

I ordered one early on and canceled. I just don’t want to look at it. The face has a goofy look, and it taints Christopher Reeve. The box and base was terrific lol. The statue sucks. It’s a $200 doll.

This was a day one pre-order for me and it has been delayed and delayed (no big deal) but the final product has me concerned. The "S" on the back of the cape is laughable. Good grief.
Mine should be shipping soon and is paid in full (other than taxes/shipping cost) I want to see it in person but not feeling really good about this piece.

They should’ve hired me. They fucked up. Lmao I can sculpt Christopher Reeve’s face better than this in 1/6th scale. They dropped the ball. How are they hiring artists? Do they wait for some random artist to ask to work for them or is it through connections? I just have no idea how to apply to work on sculpts there. I guess they just pick them off from art college or something?

Agree. Maybe 10 years ago that headsculpt would have been acceptable but not today.
I bought some sideshow pieces Dragon Slayer, Sova, Latest Black Widow. All very beautiful. I can't believe Sideshow. What were they thinking. Makes you wonder why you should preorder. Most of the time statues are still available after release and often also at a discount.

However, I've come to the conclusion that for that price,I need it to be as close to perfection as possible. I'm really disappointed because all of my other side show collectibles have been spot on.

This looks like a bootleg Jimmy Garapalo as Superman. This is the reason why Sideshow has these massive sales and fans shouldn't pre-order their items. Wait until it's out first and evaluate.

It looks like a kid drew that S on the cape and cut it out with scissors. I don't think the head sculpt is there. It's like 70% there for me. The paint job is horrible, and the seam line is truly head scratching that they would ok that for production. EPIC FAIL.
I have an idea I haven’t checked the price on this, but how about we do a custom work figure remove the clothing and customize the body to make it into a possible action figure

Thanks for feeling sorry for me because I'm really really Disappointed 😞 and that's being Polite as I can be...I just feel that SS have given us a Product that's far from what was being promoted. The Sculpt , The Suit and the Price is just not good enough for what we got in hand. I will go as far as saying SS this is False Advertising...the Proto Pics sold me on this Piece and then we get this...I Cancelled my Pre-Order as I know did many and it's such a Shame this could have been so much better 😔
What do I think? Well I think that the elves that produce amazing products in the Sideshow work shop were dipping in to the spiked eggnog a little too much. I think that when they sober up and see what they have done they are going to be a bit upset. They did a much better job on the Crow piece than this Christopher Reeve Superman. Still if there is anyone getting it then all I can say is HoHoHope you enjoy it and have a Happy Holidays.
