First listen won't satisfy. Listen again, then the bars that you missed the first time will make sense. Jay has elite wordplay. Double and triple entendre.
Jay-Z bars are nowhere near simple. He's probably the best ever at the double entendre/wordplay. You have to have an appreciation for wittiness and an ear for slick shyt. People who say Jay don't got bars are low IQ and only understand above the surface lyrics (Pac, DMX, etc type rappers). If you're into artist like Lupe, Fabolous, etc then you will get Jay-z.
Jay is known for a variety of his things number one would probably be his consistency over 25 years of of dropping quality music. He's also known for his flow. He's known for his bars, many of which go over people's heads, especially with his double entenderas.. There is also a lot of substance in his music he drops jewels messages that you can gain something from not just simply rhyming words together. HE also chooses to rhyme over good beats so you can say production But let me pose this question to you what do you see in Jay Z that you give him 9s and better on majority of his songs and albums. Surely you're not giving someone a 10 off of average bars in a hot beat. You've heard him rhyming with Nas on black Republicans I believe, you've heard him rhyming with Biggie on I love the dough are all these rappers dwarfing Jay when there on songs with him in your opinion?. Everyone from Rakim Big Nas Jadakiss Scarface Kendrick Cole have all said Jay is one of the best to do it. Hell Wayne is running around with that man's lyrics tattooed to his body that surely is not because he's a good businessman and has good beats.
Everything; the first verse of Pray is incredibly complex but there's certain things you wouldn't get due to your lack of knowledge on Jay's history and on picking up certain literary devices; and it's not just the wordplay but the way the words are put together, he's an amazing writer.
I'm A Nas is The 🐐 Of This 1st n Foremost But, Say no one on this planet has ever made flows Soo effortlessly than Hov. They Say Kendrick Does too but, we've actually seen Jay go in a corner and 10 mins later have a unwritten hit. Hook voice changes n all. Like if every rapper ever had the same beat to make a song in 15mins from Scratch😊. Jay-Z won't lose that. Besides that he MAY have lied the least in his raps. And that always helps...🤷🏾♂️
Definitely agree with your ratings, I think this album is one of his best p.s you were right Idris Elba is the actor from Tyler Perry's Daddy Little Girls, he was also in the Wire.
diddy ass. jada and mase wrote his shyt Jay got bars. if you not in tune with the times, do your homework. his bars ahead of other rappers tryna catch up
Jay didn't really come up under Biggie and in many ways Biggie looked up to him; their paths intersected when Jay already had his own label and was making Reasonable Doubt.
Jay Z bars are very descriptive with realistic dope boy raps. He mix in elite wordplay and his bars have multiple meanings
