Why did I choose the Hilleberg Allak 2 | My First Impressions | Hilleberg the Tentmaker

  • The Hilleberg Allak 2 whilst not the lightest tent in its class is light enough for mobile journeys, where you move your camp every day, its two-entrance construction allows for superb ventilation options in warm weather. At the same time, the Allak's three-pole dome structure is strong enough for summer or winter base camp use in all but the worst conditions, and the fully freestanding construction make it ideal for tough pitching conditions, such as rocky ground and sand. In addition, its two integrated vestibules are set parallel to the sleeping area, giving excellent access to gear storage space as well as ease of entry and exit.
    I bought this tent due to having so many flexible options as a single solo tent but also to use with my family.

    Today I got my Allak 2. It has three stowage pockets each side - six in all. I guess Hilleberg must have heeded comments from reviews like yours. It feels great and I'm looking forward to it's maiden voyage - I bought it for kayak camping. It feeds heavy for backpacking or cycle touring for one person.

    I’ve got the exact same tent. I’m 6’ 2” and for me there isn’t a better solo or 2 person tent.. yes it’s a bit heaver than others on the market. But for me i love the workmanship on the tent and theres definitely no other tent i’d rather be in on any conditions… Nicely put together my friend… thanks for sharing… cheers Mark

    Many years ago we were camping in an exposed campsite in Patagonian Andes. During the night a gale-force wind (gusts of ~150 km/h or perhaps even more) came. With my wife we slept in our Allak 2 like babies. In the morning to our shock we discovered that during the night tents of ALL other campers have been smashed to pieces. We are talking 30-40 other tents with broken poles, torn, etc. Our Allak was the only tent that survived on that campsite without any problems. Before this event I had doubted if purchasing a Hilleberg was the right decision, afterwards I bought 2 more tents of this brand.

    The Allak 2 is a great tent, and I also use it as a one man tent sometimes. But I also have the Soulo red label that I use when camping in Alpine environments (where the weather can turn really nasty), or just want to go lighter. I trust Hilleberg tents to take care of me (they’re bomb proof). Having the right tent is a safety issue, no doubt about it. All the best from Norway 🇳🇴

      How are both of these tents with condensation?

    • @PackBoots
      @PackBoots  Před 2 lety +1

      Every tent I’ve owned suffers with condensation. Winter camping tends to be a little worse as the temperature on the inside vs outside is so different. Venting options in both help but regrettably condensation is something you just have to manage.

    • @p.richter9592
      @p.richter9592 Před 2 lety +1

      @@bimazivanovic4784 Condensation is something that can/will be a problem from time to time. It all depends on the temperature, the weather and how much flow you get from the vents in the tent. I used my Allak 2 as a basecamp tent at 4600 feet, and it was a lot of rain at the time. I had no problem with condensation, and my tent was bone dry on the inside. However, it was quite windy up there, and I had all the vents fully opened 👍🏻👍🏻🇳🇴

    We’re considering this as we gave us tent wild camping when we got our Campervan. Looking back at photos we’re itching to get back into it now.

    Great tent I was looking to get 1 but the price was eye watering and then everywhere I looked were out of stock.im a solo camper and the weight was a concern also but I love the space it gives I'm done with cramped 1p tents.so I I couldn't afford this and no availability I ended up with the kuiu storm star 2p I'm not saying it's as good a quality but for half the price and 700g lighter it's great for me.if you're much over 6ft tho the storm star might not work for you.

    • @PackBoots
      @PackBoots  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Craig. The weight is a bit much sometimes. I've stripped back my other kit a bit to make space for the extra grams! KULU tent sounds interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

  • @RussellVineyard
    @RussellVineyard Před 3 lety +1

    I honestly have always thought those storage pockets should be higher up the tent. Sometimes the way gear gets or the way you lay, those tend to get blocked. How's the condensation in this tent? Are there any ventilation windows? I'm mainly a canoe tripper, so weight isn't a major concern of mine. But since I'm often closer to water, I look heavily at condensation.

    • @PackBoots
      @PackBoots  Před 3 lety

      Ventilation options are pretty good. I’ve only had a couple of bad issues with condensation when there has been zero wind, other than that it’s no worse than other tents I’ve owned. Unfortunately condensation is something that’s hard to avoid especially in winter. Thanks for watching. 👍

    • @PackBoots
      @PackBoots  Před rokem

      I’m I tend to sleep diagonal to get the maximum length possible. I’ll also use a bivvy bag inside to prevent the base of my sleeping bag getting wet in case it does rub. If you’re a side sleeper then you shouldn’t need to worry as you’ll be curled up a little more. 👍⛺️⛰🥾

    it is absolute a awesome tent the allak 2. This tent mostly get used for kayaking. But for 1 person hiking much to heavy. For use with 2 person , it is perfect with the weight, you can split the weight . I use the MSR Access 2. It is a 4 season and freestanding, 2 door tent and weight only 1860 grams. Quality off MSR tents is good but not so good as a Hilleberg. ATB Raymond

    I'm seriously considering a Hilleberg 2 person standalone 4 season tent with vestibules as I'd like to put a Brompton folding bicycle and luggage in one and have my small tent stove in the other, with uncluttered living space in between.
    I originally thought of going for a taller tent, but that would be unlikely to survive high winds and the only thing worse than a tent collapsing is a tent collapsing onto a red hot tent stove and bringing down the stovepipe with it!
    Do you think that a small tent stove would work with this tent.

    • @PackBoots
      @PackBoots  Před 3 lety +3

      I can comfortably fit in it with my wife both using standard sleeping mats. However it could be a squeeze with two large men (or someone else my size). The beauty is the vestibules are huge so all kit other than sleeping kit can sit there. In terms of weight it is a beast and you do notice it when doing the miles. Longest I’ve carried it for is 17miles over tricky terrain which at times was tough. However when I take the Allak I tend to reduce any other luxury items and stick to the bare minimum. Still love it though. 👍
