If you look at most comedy from this year (1970), you can tell that Steve was waaaaaaaaay ahead of his time. It's the ironic humor that make him a superstar before the end of the decade. It took a while for the world to catch up to his mind.
In 1969 I knew a boy named Martin Laura. He told me he was going to become a girl. Did Laura Martin have a bulge in his pants or was he just happy to meet you?.
Steve Martin could take the silliest, dumbest, corniest idea... and then bite into it and hold on so ferociously, that you couldn't help but laugh. That takes genius.
AW. Both the guys look about 15 here! And both adorable. I first saw Raybone on the Andy Williams show in late 1969. Just fell instantly in love 😍 And then this summer replacement series...I was in heaven for an hour every week! Been a major fan of Ray since...50 years! 😳 ❤️ Love Steve too! Fifty yrs later and still brilliant as ever.
Amazing how so much of it is already in place, the arrow through the head, the balloon animals, the fake nose/eyeglasses... I kept waiting for him to say he was a wild and crazy guy!
This was a family favorite. Each show aired once, maybe twice. Before VCR. It's fun to see what we saw as kids. My Uncle Robert's favorite show. Comedy completely changed.
He was 25 in '70. To think I had tears coming out of I laughed at this then. Nobody was like this then. Now?..how many by the 80's stand up did the manic guy with rubber face and props? 1970 was a good year. Original.
@11:50 Hong Kong Flu Virus joke. How ironic! He went on to have a fabulous career after using that name. Good thing he wasn't starting his career today!
Do you know where or have the full performances of any of these videos? I remaster & preserve comedy. I've been trying to collect more Steve Martin & I love these appearances & they are such good quality.
Could that have been Country Joe McDonald and The Fish? A couple of them look very familiar. Anyone know? I asked myself the same question. Who were they?
@@leegibson3760 How bout I just search for the song called The Streak. It seems like something a guy like this Ray Stevens character might create. Genius!
I only knew about Martin in the past 20 years, and don't think he is that funny - too strained. But this early stuff is great. He sure got more safe and predictable (boring) as he got older.
I’m reading through the comments and I must not be as high as these people cause this has got to be the most whitest, blandest and most CORNIEST comedy routine I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen Monty Python. This kind of comedy was funny back then but it wouldn’t definitely fly today.
Oh Wow. Haven't we come a long way in comedy since. Put this crap against Chappelle Show and... Let me say this instead, this doesn't qualify as a comedy show let alone comparing it to Chappelle show.

In 1970-1971 I knew a girl named Laura Martin. She told me her cousin Steve had just been on Ray Stevens. (Unreal!)

omg I love those shirts they are wearing.
This is the first time I have ever seen Steve Martin with dark hair.
*Honk Kong* flu --- "that's racist", said nobody

I have a crush on Ray Stevens too... ❤ Brilliant man!!
What a wild and crazy guy.
Haha.. “Uh oh, I’m going to tip over.” I’m definitely using that. Steve Martin is a national treasure IMO.
Steve Martin in a nut to sure . Also an incredible Banjo player ;)
I had forgotten how good looking he was. Man those pants were tight.
Yeahh
Just tight enough ;)
The censor must have been in dreamland at 13:55.
Amazing how so much of it is already in place, the arrow through the head, the balloon animals, the fake nose/eyeglasses... I kept waiting for him to say he was a wild and crazy guy!
"I'm the worlds greatest comedian." Who will be selling out 75K seat amphitheaters in a couple years.... Great video. thanks
Two days after this was filmed, his hair suddenly turned completely white.
Notice how it says “AW” at the top left corner of the screen? That’s because he’s so adorable in this footage.
I thought it was an ad for Root beer.
Haha! It is actually for Andy Williams :)
And very shortly, became the Worlds Greatest Comedian.
Steve: Hi I am the worlds greatest comedian.
- one person who time travelled from
the future claps.
Young Steve Martin's face remember to me a mix of Dennis Quaid and Harrison Ford.
I'm seeing Ashton Kutcher, with all that hair.
Yes!!!
I think Steve and Harrison look like brothers.
in other words his face is perfect
OMG He DOES!! hahaha! Great call.
So glad to be #469.
Thanks, Steve, for your entire lifetime!
This was a family favorite. Each show aired once, maybe twice. Before VCR. It's fun to see what we saw as kids. My Uncle Robert's favorite show. Comedy completely changed.
Wow Steve Martin is so slim and good looking here...
So so so handsome. Those legs

1970 was a good year. Original.
This is unique humor. Well done
Does anyone else see Dennis Quaid's face when he smiles or am I just going crazy....😜
The guy above you agrees.
You do realize the two are not mutually exclusive? J/k
If you are, we can be crazy together.
With brown hair, his good looks become mouth watering! Wow!!!
The laugh-track was really digging this.
Brilliant and hilarious.
I miss this kind of humor. And I miss those ties, too.
It's awesome that Ray Stevens gave Steve such a public venue so early...yet of the two, whose name is INSTANTLY recogonizable after 50+ years...?
Steve Martin - but Ray Stevens is still going strong at CabaRay in Nashville! Check it out: raystevenscabaray.com/
Toadster both
Ray Stevens and Steve Martin are equally recognizable. Both have done classic Comedy. One with a piano and the other with a banjo...
Cool to watch this act as it was honed and refined in following years.
He's still a funny guy but good in dramas too.
First time I've ever seen Steve Martin without grey hair.
"World's Greatest Comedian" .... somewhat prophetic.
Very handsome!
This is great!
wow, all this meta fourth wall humor is very clever
That was really funny.
He is a very intelligent guy.
@11:50 Hong Kong Flu Virus joke. How ironic! He went on to have a fabulous career after using that name. Good thing he wasn't starting his career today!
Steve looks like Mickey Dolenz back in the 60's before he curled his hair!
when he straighten his hair pretty groovy
🍺 2 please 🍺
I loved Steve martan
Remember Steve Martin used the phone book in his movie
"The new phone books are here"!
“I’m somebody!”
Yeah, its also how M Emmet Walsh randomly picks Steve as his target
If we put lead back into gasoline again would everybody start wearing funny clothes again?
Oh my this is the best comment I read in a while :D
This it sooo 70’s.
A very young Steve with dark hair..
Fun fact Steve was once on the dating game tv show and won a date with Deana Martin (Dean martin's daughter)
Steve Martin. Made the movie "The Jerk" and was an overnight success.......................................
he's actually a great balloon sculptor
Ray Stevens had a show????
Wow.
Fun to see where the “arrow through the head” routine came from
Young Steve was a mix of young Harrison ford and young Dennis quaid. Good looking dude
Pretty interesting
Do you know where or have the full performances of any of these videos? I remaster & preserve comedy. I've been trying to collect more Steve Martin & I love these appearances & they are such good quality.
Steve reminds me of John Fogerty from ccr
Where was I? I don't remember The Ray Stevens Show at all, and I'm pretty sure I was awake and sober for at least part of 1970.
11:48 Hong Kong flu virus?
*X-Files theme*
Much younger and thinner Steve Martin
Can I buy the full episodes?
the lady in the dinghy bit hasn't changed much in 50 years
Who’s Ray Stevens? That was always a good line from all the guests on his show.
Blimey - those trousers ..... you can tell what religion he is! 😳
HUH?
Funny way to put it. Until now, I never knew he had big junk.
legend say this is the only time in his life when steve didnt have grey hair.
Steve was only about 25 here.
Ouch, those shirts are hurting my eyes. Where'd I put my sunglasses?
COMEDIAN OF FIRST CLASS HAHAHAHA 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
On Carson, Steve made ballon animals. But with no air in this them.
who are the band in the banjo bits?
Could that have been Country Joe McDonald and The Fish? A couple of them look very familiar.
Anyone know? I asked myself the same question. Who were they?
Chuck Ster
The banjo player was Steve Martin. The rest I don’t know.
Her teeth were milk-white before dentists ever knew how to whiten teeth
Are the guys singing Mason Proffit? Sure sounds like tue
He sometimes sounds like Robin Williams here.
I always thought his hair was silver grey naturally.
It was and it took him years of hard work to get it that way
I lost at 5:59.
This man looks and sounds at least 40 at only 25.
No Kennedy jokes-be happy!
@3:30 was that girl on star trek the CAGE? looks like her
Yep, she’s a real Lulu
Steve Martin was young?
11:51 hong kong flu virus.
L. A. PHONE BOOK IS FUNNIER !
I like him better with white hair!!
Who in the hell is Ray Stevens?
@@docwashburn430 Thanks. Where can I find Wikipedia? 😂

@@MikeBensonmichael2pointO Glad you actually know who he is, I was starting to feel old.
Lol
Hhhhhhhuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhh
Steve was on point, but the laugh-track is way off the chart.
1:46 Hong Kong Flu Virus
I hope he wasn't a writer on this show.
I only knew about Martin in the past 20 years, and don't think he is that funny - too strained. But this early stuff is great. He sure got more safe and predictable (boring) as he got older.
Man this is bad...I was waiting it to get fun...it just never happened...
Debbie Downer
Marcus Switzer Yes, some of his acts were too blatantly goofy-- and some comical genius.
If this is the best ... yikes.

His skits are uneven. He has some very funny acts and not so funny acts.
Oh Wow. Haven't we come a long way in comedy since. Put this crap against Chappelle Show and... Let me say this instead, this doesn't qualify as a comedy show let alone comparing it to Chappelle show.
