We are not allowed to have weapons, at all. We can get armed escort, but some ports in Africa do not allow them or their weapons to enter the port, so we sometimes are alone, with only barbed wire to protect us.
The problem with arms on the cargo ships is insurance. These ships run on basic needs. They say there isn't as much money on each trip as you would think. The insurance companies don't want to be responsible for the lawsuits that would happen from weapons on board. The ransom they pay to get their ships back is evidently less costly, since they keep paying it.

Father was a merchant marine during the 30's Indo- China conflicts. He photographed many public mass executions of so called pirates.. some of his photos were used in anti-Japanese propaganda and newsreels. I took his old B&W album to school for a war history project. And the teacher immediately confiscated it, saying I may even be illegal to show to minors. Father was livid when the school told him it had been destroyed. But after threats of litigation, it appeared the teacher still had it for his own personal war collection.
