  • From February to December 1916, the French and Germans waged one of the First World War’s most devastating battles in order to take control of the hills around Verdun. A head on confrontation, fought with no help from their allies, army versus army, nation versus nation. 11 months of fighting, over 2 million soldiers mobilised and 300,000 dead.
Today, this massacre seems senseless. But in 1916, soldiers on both sides accepted to go into battle. Why?
This documentary looks back at this insane battle that was to become the bloodiest chapter of the First World War. Looking back through the personal archives of veterans, delving into their daily lives, their dreams and their nightmares, but also using historical re-enactments and numerous computer-generated images, Verdun: They shall not pass! revisits France’s last great victory over Germany. A battle that would become the symbol of nationalist folly and age-old hostility between two nations.

Blurring out the dead and wounded disrespects all that fought. Furthermore, it was never the intent of commanders, film-makers or fighting men to have that happen. It was to remember them so that it would never happen again. CZcams violates this solemn oath.

I get what you're saying, a documentary should show us the raw footage of events, but you're writing this comment on a video that (as far as i know?) isn't age restricted, and CZcams's policy doesn't make exceptions for what you can or can't blur. Your message is pure and respectful but you can't really say CZcams is breaking any oaths here, it's the simple fact that a 9y/o kid wouldn't click on this video unsupervised to get traumatized by seeing unedited raw footage of piles of dead bodies

Want to blame somebody, blame Pewdeepew or whatever his stupid name is. He is the one that made anti-Semitic remarks that were made while being paid. The advertiser did not want to pay for their brand to be associated with a person like that and who can blame them, a true foul human being that one. As french, I have learnt a lot on this battle with your decomentary. Thank you.
When I was a kid, Verdun was a name I have to learn in History lessons.
Each 11th of November, the classroom of the primary school have to honour the Death Monument. It was boring, all these these speech, these old men with medals on the chest and this ceremonial with flowers offered for the young men who give their life for the Patrie or if you are cynical, who died and that all.
My mother worked in a asile for all old people. All of them were poor, fishermen, shepherd, workers ..all kind of people who belonged to the working class.
They were absolutely grateful to Maréchal Petain, despite all what but bad an treason thing he did for France. He's portait as officer during this awful war, is not so beautiful and glorious as "Père la Victoire. " legend , .but that is an another subject.
It appears that battle is battle of french officers against German officers who didn't care about humans being but just of some bloody game and self- glory.
I can't see pictures about Camoun who was a shepherd in the Pyrénées wo don't speak french jut a dialect, as occitan, or André, a little man who explain how is size helped to survive in the trench.
How old they were during this butchery call WW1 ?
We can remark on these pictures some african people . They became brothers of arm for these french soldiers but for the high rank officers they were considered just canon fodder. They were coming from Sénégal and others place of the "Empire colonial Français ".
They give their life for France, and maybe the unknown soldier under the Arc de Triumph is an African..
France give to them the promise to be full and entirely french citizen. A lie.
I had a teacher, Mr Carrer, one of this teacher that many of them knew, who's seem a man who give so much, for an entirely life. We have visited a cemetery called "Cimetière des Senegalais", Sénégalaise cemetery. ..
That was a disturbing discovery about the french History.
Then, I have married a German wife and have an another point of view.
The conclusion is the same, not a people, the simple people, like me, without power, would have to die in this war.
It's the war of upper class, an international war which opposed people of the working class, french, German or English, American, Italian...so on.
It was a war of high ranking officers as a sinistre game for the glory of them.
I love my country, I love France...I love french people as I have described and feel narrow of them. It's not my purpose to say but things about them, but to say the bad side of these french who have the power to avoid and to stop this awful madness.
I can't understand the sens of these run of soldier, in the mud, hole, just in front of machine gun...and that for nothing.
There are a small town in France where the ceremony of the end war is a monument for Peace.
    And that is great.
Now, as adult, my thought is for all these young dead for nothing than capitalism and glory.
    God give them peace.

it takes a speciall someone to die a glorious death. In peace time it would be sen as utter stupidity and lack of self respect and preservation.
People were hospitalized for the very same notions in peace time. But in war, this is topsy-turvy, as is most matters concerning war. " Quoted fro Jo Morken

Because France was the only real challenger on the Continent (Land power). It meants for the Germans that if they could beat France on the Battlefield, they would dominate Europe, as the United Kingdom was very powerful on the seas, but could not challenge neither France nor Germany on land.

Germany saw the main threat coming from Russia. Germany went to war because Russia started mobilizing which Germany perceived as an existential threat. They went to war with France because France was allied to Russia and refused to stay neutral. France alone was no match for Germany by 1914. France and Russia combined was seen as a mortal threat.

The allies was beaten in 1940, the french soldiers sacrificed themself for help the brits to escape, at least for keeping a big power alive. Most of the soldiers and ships of the battle of Britain were in Dunkerk this day. That's the only reason why Germany didn't invaded UK.

An argument can be made for taking a lot of that war porn shit down. However, for this? A serious, solemn, documentary. It's disagraceful. The only reason I can think of, is its a stern reminder of the bloodshed between France and Germany. The past isn't a great look for a "united" EU.
