  • A step-by-step look at how I make 1/2" medieval-style arrows for use with a heavy poundage English Longbow.
    The heads shown in the video are hand forged by Hector Cole and John Marshall. Hector can be Googled on the web or seen in person at major UK re-enactment fayres.
    The music is by Ennio Morricone, made famous by the "Spaghetti Westerns" featuring Clint Eastwood.
    Sorry, but I do not make arrows for other people.

    Thanks. Glad you found it interesting, and I may do a bow video in the summer if I have time. No one ever sat down and taught me how to make arrows like this. I just picked up bits of information from many different people, some bowyers and others fletchers, and worked other bits out for myself over the many years I have been shooting. There is nothing quite like making your own equipment, and then taking it out into the countryside and shooting it well.

    I don't know how many years ago it was that I first watched this and was amazed... but, it still gets me. Beautiful work sir, just beautiful. Each is its own piece of art. Do you have any comments on the bow use? Particularly whether or not the medieval commanders used the falling "storm" of arrows? I've heard that tapestries etc show only close, face to face with bows aimed down and in the face. Which gives more oomph to the possible penetration of armor or at least damage from repeated blows from arrows.

    • @bigbowbrum
      @bigbowbrum  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Jane. Thank you for your kind words. The bow was a very versatile weapon and its use would depend on the circumstances. In large, open field battles, archers would shoot massed volleys up into the air, the arrows falling on the enemy, possibly up to 250 yards distant. As armies closed so the archers would lower their trajectory until they would shoot flat at close range. During siege warfare or naval engagements, distances would lessen and archers would modify the elevation of their shots accordingly, however it is certainly true that the massed volleys at battles such as Crecy (1346) and Agincourt (1415) were the ones that were the most deadly and which made the longbow famous. The bow was better suited to long range warfare as the archer was vulnerable at close range, however you are correct by saying a close range shot would be more powerful. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Nick.

  • @bigbowbrum
    @bigbowbrum  Před 14 lety

    Thanks for the feedback. I buy the shafts already cylindrical, so all I need do is create the taper. I use a scraper to scrape wood off the shaft, turning it after each scrape until I have a rough taper from 1/2" at the head to 3/8" at the nock. I then use sandpaper to make it smooth. In medieval times rectangular shafts were laid down in a V shaped groove. One square edge would be shaved off then the shaft rotated in the groove, repeating until it was roughly cylindrical, then sanded smooth.

    Well let's just say you have the right idea and all the other 19yr olds out there are missing out on a great hobby and some very useful life skills! These techniques work great on all wooden arrows. The only thing I would change is the diameter of the shaft if using them with a lighter poundage bow. You might also prefer smaller fletchings to reduce the amount of drag.

  • @bigbowbrum
    @bigbowbrum  Před 15 lety

    Hi Stickbow. Good to hear from you. Our arrow nocks are straight and fairly shallow as archaeological remains seem to show this design as the one used in medieval times..Our arrows do not lock on to the string at all, but are held on by our fingers. They would fall off if not gripped gently.

    This afternoon I learned why you use epoxy; I had made 6 arrows (ash shafts, 'dropped' goose fletching and bodkin points) with the points affixed with hide glue (historical accuracy/ ease of replacement if the shaft snapped and I had to clean out the socket). When they were done I headed out to the butts to do my daily 50 (25 grouping, 25 application) - only to spend 20 minutes pulling apart the straw butt to recover some expensive arrowheads that had come adrift...

    I choose the length of feather to suit the size of arrow and its use. Feathers help to make the arrow fly straight, so in general it is long feathers for accurate shooting, and smaller feathers for distance shooting to reduce drag.

    I mainly use Turkey wing weathers, although I have sometimes used goose which is more traditional. The wing weathers are shaped differently from one wing to the other, so it is always important that all 3 feathers come from the same wing. Usually people use left wing feathers.

    @bigbowbrum  Před 12 lety

    @bigbowbrum  Před 12 lety

    Yes Richard's Big Jig was going to be my next recommendation. He does ship to the US so it might be worth sending an e-mail & seeing how much it would cost. Otherwise take a strip of paper & wrap it round the shaft to measure the circumference. Divide the strip into 3 equal parts & mark with pen. Wrap the paper round the shaft again & transfer the 3 marks on to the shaft. Do this at the top and bottom of where the fletchings will go then use those marks as guides to attach your fletchings.

  • @bigbowbrum
    @bigbowbrum  Před 14 lety

    Thank you. I could only make about 3 of these in a day. The more alborious part is actually tapering the shaft by hand, a process I don't show as it takes too long. I also sometimes reinforce the nocks by inserting a sliver of buffalo horn in the end, and again this is very time consuming. In medieval times we think it likely they were only used once. There are accounts of archers going forward to retrieve shot arrows during lulls in a batlle, but whether they did afterwards too is not known.

  • @bigbowbrum
    @bigbowbrum  Před 13 lety

    @mghch The length of the arrows should match your own draw length. As long as the bow is tillered to draw to that length then you can make them as long as you like. My max draw is 32" but I know tall archers who draw 36"! Most traditional longbows are made around 80" long. The standard arrow length for "warbow" archers is 30 - 32". Glad the video helped.
