  • Ok so there is actually a difference between the armor materials, but the system they have is over complicated for no reason. I tried my best to make sense of it all...

Given that you mostly die either by getting shot in the head or running into another guys line of fire, it rly doesn't pay trying to min max this kind of stuff non stop. Just pick a decent aramid armor with neck protection, put some plates in it. Proly lvl 5 so that it can stop most stuff. Buy this crap in bulk so you can equip quickly and spend time in raids rather than in stash.
Sure, the best stuff available is going to save you more but only occasionally so don't bother unless you got big money.

you're dead wrong about real carriers btw, but that's ok.
most carriers are made out of simple cordura nylon. it's not ballistic on its own. inside the carrier you load whichever plates you're using, and on the commercial side we mostly run stand alone hard plates, not hard armor over soft armor, but in the military it tends to be that you're running your hard SAPI plate on the outside, like tarkov, and you have a soft armor backer. that way the hard ceramic of the plate will absorb most of the energy of the round, and then any fragments or backface deformation that could hurt you are stopped by the soft armor. tarkov models this mostly correctly other than the idea that like, a modern plate will tend to stop a LOT of tark's common rounds dead cold even with successive hits, and the ones it can't stop are not gonna be stopped at all by aramid either, like, .308 black tip is going to be in fucking monaco before it notices that the dude it just went through had iiia soft armor on under his Esapi.

Take it from a guy whose worn the stuff, that "soft insert" is a piece of foam to help prevent your fucking chest cavity from caving in, it in no way is meant to catch shrapnel. Another point I should add is that the standard issue for the U.S. right now is an IOTV rig which IS made out of cordura, BUT is lined with kevlar inserts, which DO stop small arms and shrapnel. These vest were actually originally designed to be used without plates as a means to reduce your carry load while still protecting you. I should also mention that this kevlar insert is on BOTH sides of a pocketed vest. I never said aramid could or would stop bullets, I said it helps with energy transfer. And in Tarkov specifically it should come before AND after the plate on a penetrating round to change damage transfer.

@@BarryEFT no, esapis, xsapis, etc are issued with iiia backers. we've both worn the stuff, maybe only I read the labels.

also, there's no reason in the world to put iiia in FRONT of a ceramic plate. iiia will not keep an impact from cracking a ceramic plate, and it can't stop fragments of a bullet if the bullet isn't in fragments yet.
you put the IIIA behind the plate (just like tarkov) to protect you from both the Back Face Deformation and to capture any fragments that make it through the plate.
russians, the scamps, DO have some equipment that uses very thin, insubstantial-for-bullet-protection aramid to protect the wearer from the (dogshit never wear it) steel and titanium plates in the kit. this is mostly dumb and backwards, it's something they did during the cold war, sort of like the vietnam issue US flak jackets.
many modern setups are stand-alone, and modern composite armor is perfectly capable of stopping threats in its' class without a IIIa backer, but ICW (in conjunction with) setups like the SAPI, ESAPI, XSAPI are the institutional preference so that's what the RFPs are for and that's what gets issued.
a side benefit for these setups is that you get extended protection, many police wear vests that have BALCS cut soft armor, which covers the torso fairly comprehensively, and then wear rifle plates that only cover the 10x12" (or so) area around the heart and lungs.
Ordinarily, i would never be the pedant who climbs up your ass about realism or calling a magazine a clip or whatever, i try not to be, but in this case you were 'correcting' BSG when they got something right. although, i'd agree that nikita should go fucking shiver in a trench, since he's willing to go on podcasts and scream for ukrainian blood. it's disgusting and ghoulish.

@@madeleineollerton5993 My bad I thought you were talking about trauma pads. IIIA backers are mainly used in the SPCS and commercialized "look alikes". The IOTV is what I'm familiar with, and it operates a little differently from the SPCS, so my bad I didn't mean to refer to all carriers in tarkov that way.

@@BarryEFT the IOTV is (besides being just plain dogshit lol) sort of a special case, for sure. iiia backers are issued, tho.
wishing tarkov would add the SPC and update their carrier stats so that slicker rigs can at least significantly increase mobility to account for their coverage debuff.
also i've gotten VERY into the ANA M2 in this game. it has a lot of coverage, it's L3 aramid, no neck, no pussy, but it has a great rig layout for mags and such too, and for 40k-60k rub it's made for some very inexpensive loadouts. I recall you saying that you're not a fan of rigs but IDK what i'm missing, is there an advantage to running a rig+carrier combo that I'm not seeing?
