- My second youtube video, by unpopular demand! Here is a medley of two great surf classics that go great together, "Banzai Washout", originally by The Catalinas, and "The Wedge" by the King of Surf Guitar, Dick Dale. This is using the same equipment as the Misirlou/Hava Nagila video, with the addition of a Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive, an MXR Carbon Copy analog delay, and a Fender Precision Bass. Once again, the audio was pre-recorded by myself to allow different camera angles and improved audio quality.
Excellent surf guitar playing Michael. As a fellow surf guitar picker I congratulate you on all of this fine music. I love hearing and playing it!
Perfect cover!!
Yeah!!! Going to be 2021 Soooon and I'm still watching this.....I LOVE both SGV300 and Morris E. Guitar .....sorry if I spelled the name wrong !!!
Thanks Gretscher! I had heard of the dispute, but didn't know about Yamaha filing their shoes for a little while... that's pretty wild if that's what they were thinking! It's a totally different beast than any Gibson, not in a bad or good way either... just has more in common with a Fender or even a Mosrite. But yeah, it's discontinued in Japan now too where it sold a lot better.
Now THAT'S how to play Surf guitar, totally jaw dropping performance
EXCELLENT guitar playing love that sound
Fantastic playing, and incredible tone from that Yamaha guitar!!!
Dude, great guitar sound ! And of course 2 nice songs, well played. We want more !
fantastico. superbly done. love that kick the tank touch.
SURF'S UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MrMuddyBleach Thanks- it's fundamentally the same design as a vintage '62 Fender reverb unit (hand-wired, unlike the Fender reissues with circuit boards), which is traditionally how they got their dripping-wet reverb sound.
awesome
Kicking the amp for reverb was such a boss move 😎
Your skills are outstanding, and your tone is bulletproof! You should be touring and sponsored!
Great job man!
Great surf playing!
@NickFeder Nick, thanks for all of the comments man! That's a Yamaha SGV 800. They're getting a little harder to find since being officially discontinued a few years back (they were only available in the US in the early 2000's), but still are relatively cheap for what you get... great bang for the buck.
bloody hell !!! great job , dude !!!!
DUDE!!! Fantastic job on this
very nicely done !!!
Awesome playing dude.
@MrMuddyBleach Sure it would, I usually dirty up my sound with a little transparent overdrive myself. I also have a "Fuzzmite" (a great take on a Mosrite Fuzzrite), but don't use it with a lot of reverb at all... it's more for getting a Ventures/mid-60's/biker sound where the focus is the fuzz. I'd imagine the Hendrix Dunlop type of fuzz might work at a low setting though. I'd definitely give trans. OD (Timmy, Cool Cat TO) or something like a Xitoc RC Booster a shot first.
Great music,Great Video, keep it goin
So that reverb is from the G spring tank? That's pretty impressive.
Well done!
Very nice job!
great playing and clip : )
@MrMuddyBleach Well, if you're doing a full surf set, I'd just use that money for a Fender RI tank and use whatever amp you have; no amp reverb is going to get drippy enough IMO. It's the single most important tool in the surf sound, so don't skimp! But if you must use amp reverb, some people have used Fender Deluxe Reverbs with some success. Might be enough for you.
Great ! duck & cover
Great playing my good man. Impressive playing. Great guitar too. In about 1999 when Gibson got into a dispute with Guitar Center, GC stopped carrying Gibson. Strange move, right? Just like Costco vowed not to carry Coke anylonger and you know how long that took. Well Yamaha filed Gibson's shoes at GC and they carried all these Yamaha SGV 800s and the like. I wish I had purchased one but now seems that Yamaha does not make these anylonger or at least not for us US customers.
very nice!
Cool! Great!
Good sound!!At what volume crancked this amp?
Regards
Nice!
@morphballio Hah, the weird thing is is that I lovelovelove listening to Fuzzrite type pedals but I don't like the responsiveness I get out of most Fuzzrites or most fuzzes in general. I got a Fulltone OCD that might keep all that drippy reverb goodness intact.
By the way do you know any nice clean, gig type amps with good built in spring reverb in them under $700? I have a reverb pedal and I need some real spring action from an amplifier for some surf shows soon.
Love RatFink on the tank!
yes,,good job.........
Did you do any modifications to that guitar ???
woww .. hat's off :-)
@morphballio Hey man tell me something. Would this still sound alright with a fuzz pedal/ overdrive in front of it? I've been trying to put together the gear I would need for this fuzzy but reverby guitar sound in my head.
sounds great! are these yamahas comparable to jazzmasters?
The tone is really not the same (not as mellow/balanced...more higher-output, perhaps closer to a Mosrite), the scale is closer to a Jaguar, and the vibrato is very similar to a strat. Definitely different and weird!
Would you ever sell one of your yamaha axes?
dont like the guitar much , but you have nailed it awesum sound
are you in Florida? If so, let's start a band!
Are you in prison? looks like prison bars behind you
Nice!
