Thank you for recommending the sweetbox shrub. It sounds like it will work perfectly for what we need. I considered the daphne, but found that they are highly poisonous and should not be used if you have pets or children. I wish plant labels would include this information. Love your channel.

Great video! I live way out east of Portland, OR, in nursery country. I have had great success with winter Daphne at 2 different homes near my front porch, which were both on the north side of my house but very open shade. Never really dry in these areas but did not do anything special to the hole when planting. They thrive and get huge, with loads of blooms! Heavenly scent!

Daphne is high on my list, possibly because I killed several before being successful with them!!
My 2 are abt 20 yrs old, evergreen, variegated, shiny leaves, lovely fragrance!
Thank you for your wonderfully enjoyable videos. I live in Southern California, zone 10. I’ve been trying rather unsuccessfully to find a CZcams channel that focuses on my zone. Rogers Garden has a few but they are not as extensive as your videos. So, I have a request. When describing plants besides noting the lowest zone that a plant can withstand, can you please also note the upper zone? Many thanks for your efforts in providing us with great plant selections!

I'm in the UK, and adore daphes. However, I find that Daphne dislike being moved, or heavily pruned. They can also be hard to propagate and are fairly slow growing, hence expensive to purchase. So be sure to plant the Daphne where you want it to remain longterm, and give it room. They are indeed stunning evergreens, with the most amazing fragrance.
I also have several of the Sarcococca Confusa (Sweetbox) which I agree are also brilliant - great in shade, fairly fast growing, easy to clip to a nice shape after flowering, and again with a fantastic scent.

Daphne are so fragrant , they are one of my favorite. The problem is that the plant would just die for no reason, which is such a pity.
I had just spent over 500 dollars up in Silverdale. Then I had to return to AZ for a family death. Which will keep me in AZ for months. My plants and weeding will probably be as if I had never been there.
I planted Daphne this year. Excited to see what 2024 will bring. Mine is near my front porch.
My Daphne is blooming. Its leaves had a few brown spots that scared me, so I added hydrogen peroxide to my water and gave it a good watering. The spots went away.

My daphne got a little leggy so I decided to prune a bit to see if I could make it bush out more on the bottom. The pieces I cut off, I decided to root in water along with some potato vine...and surprisingly enough...they are pushing out new growth. Hope I can plant them and they will help. Always worth a try!
My daphne is in year 3 and smells amazing. I read that they are short lived however, hoping mine lives forever! I’m getting a camellia next!

I had a Daphne in my Virginia Beach garden, which scented half my street..
It was 10-12 years old, grew to 4' high and 6' across, and during blooming it began to loose leaves, then sprigs then branches and in 2 months it was gone.

Hi, I just found your channel and I just Subscribed. I’m also new to gardening, this might be a silly question but do you have a video to explain the difference of Perennials and Annuals? My 1st year in our new home I went crazy with buying plants but I planted them in pots, however I did loose a lot of plants due to the TX freeze. Right now I’m experimenting with seeds, and I think I, doing good with that but I would like to plants some plants that will come back the following season.
No need for a video. Annuals you have to replant every year due to dying back at the end of the growing season. Perennials however come back year after year and are a good investment for the garden or containers. So sorry to hear of the deep freeze. It just means you can experiment with some new plants! All the best. :)

SUMMER dafnes...Part shade area in Walnut Creek Calif. Recommendations? I have had great success with my spring dafne here by my porch.
I have an evergreen viburnum, but suddenly a lot of the leaves are turning brown and dry. I wonder whether it has some kind of fungi. Do I need to dig it out and replace. If so do I need to replace the soil too.

Yes! They do great in pots.
Love this video! just in time for me. Could you please please pretty please explain the following? If your zone is equal to or higher than the zone listed for the plant, it will be hardy for you and thrive in your climate.
I am looking at a shrub for zone 7; I am in zone 9b; according to the above it's saying the shrub will be good for my 9b zone, but I am not sure.

Without knowing the name of the shrub hard to know. You can Google the name and find the information telling you what zones the shrub can grow in. There is usually a range from the coldest zone to the warmest that the plant can tolerate. Finding out where it's native home is gives you an idea what it prefers as well.

Do you think it would be possible to create a mixed hedge with sweet box in the shadiest areas, daphne in the part sun, and viburnum in the sunny areas? I have shady corners moving to full sun in the middle of the property line seperating myself from my neighbor who has stinky stinky dogs. I want to create an evergreen hedge of fragrant plants with summer blooming fragrant perennials and annuals. I love in zone 8b

When you say it’s good thru zone 6, does that mean it’s ok for zone 8. I’m in Texas 50 mi. south Dallas. Lots of shade but west side some sun. 40 ft live oaks in front facing NW. would love to have the 2 evergreen shrubs!

I killed my daphne when I tried to move it.
If I must plant my Daphne in a pot, can it take moving from one place to another......or...is it sensitive to a change of place?
They don't like being moved once established.
Do you mean that once the Daphne is established in a pot that pot should not be moved? Do I need to shelter the potted Daphne in the winter? Coldest temps here at around 22* at night in the winter and we get snow 3 or 4 times a year.

I am on year 2 of my potted daphne and I have moved it at least 4x. It's fine
