The sport of cycling has been plagued by scandal for quite some time, and it will be difficult for it to move past the issues of the recent past. Let's take a look at some of cycling's most insanely contentious incidents.
Here are the top seven controversies in cycling's history.
Exposed: The Pollentier Affair
There is one mountain that may come to represent the Tour de France more than any other.
In 1978, Michel Pollentier, a hunched-over Belgian, rode up the winding mountain to win a stage and grab the race leader's yellow jersey in what appeared like one of the race's greatest rides.
The little man with the painful-looking style, who had won the Giro d'Italia the year before and been the main threat to eventual victor Bernard Hinault, would soon be remembered only for his tragic end.
Pollentier, who used amphetamines to help him win, hid a condom and tube device under his armpit in an attempt to pass a teammate's pee during the drug test. When the tester busted another rider trying the same stunt, he was exposed.
Pollentier blamed his and other cyclists' psychological and physical issues on their long-term reliance on PEDs, as described in Olivier Dazatems' Seigneurs et Forecast du Velo.
