This was a messed up weekend, three champion drums 2 of them got consolation but sounded way better, I think people need to stop picking family as judges and get actual singers to judge contests because this was ridiculous and not the only unfair judging made this weekend, hard to find honest powwows these days

Im going to say this as humbley as I can..
She did it all on her own. Those champion drums had 3 to 4 singers which makes it easier to sing. Then you put in the song itself. Word songs are harder to sing than straight.
The back up singing was fair. Just because a drum is considered "Champion" dosnt initial them to be in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, place just by being there. The 2nd place girls were awesome and sounded dope. And those champion drums were all host, they all won in the hand drum contest with one host having two groups in it and the other with one group. These three groups were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. So they not only got host pay they also got the hand drum place pay. Then the ladys back up for both champion groups got consolation in the back up singing contest so they made out pretty good I'd say. While the other groups struggled to get something to eat for their families, and gas money to get home. This is why the traveling groups get into the specials. In hopes to get some extra travel cash.
      You talk about "Fair"?
Starstruck judges only pick the top names because they don't see the one up and coming. Or they put the big names on the top of the list even if they make a mistake because they know that they will be judging them in the next contest round of dancing or singing. I have seen this first hand. To be cool, and put those who have a big name in front of integrity is a common thing in contest powwows. You talk about fair, yet you put down anyone who is making a name for themselves, by themselves. Just because you yourself have an opinion, yet don't know the point system of of contest nor the points of interest the family or committee is looking for. From you,, how is that "Fair?"
The family chose this solo lady for more than just her singing talent. And she has talent for sure. Composure, educate, and humbleness around the drum were factors. The way she carried herself outside the arena and how she got her Dad and her brothers all together to sing was also looked at. How the singers value her opinion and not just looked at her as "back up" but as a part of the drum. These and many micro factors were put into place.
Sometimes when a drum gets to big, they act a certain way, expect people to obey rather than ask. Don't get me wrong, the other ladys in the contest were amazing. They all did an awesome job, and this lady who won was very honored because she was shoulder to shoulder with some of the best. If you watch their reactions to the winning lady you can tell how "humble" they are.
They just got "humbled" this time. Be happy for the lady who won and keep an eye out for her at the next powwow.
No disrespect. Just stating my own opinion on the matter.
Thanks for your opinion. We always listen to all voices. This helps us to humble ourselves moving forward.
