I am ex RN myself and was shown round a boat of this class. In many ways the Soviets were more advanced than UK and US boats. They were always pushing the envelope and consequently accidents were common.
The glowing instruments and gauges are coated with a radioactive substance that made them glow. The device you thought was a geiger counter is very likely to be a magnetometer so the steel hull of a vessel above or sub bellow could be detected.
Given the external view I would imagine you looked through the navigation periscope. If the attack scope was raised you would know as they are very tall.
Few bits of info. Where you were with the two doors is an escape hatch to be used in an emergency, they have more of a placebo effect as operating depths would have resulted in death due to the pressures involved. Pure helium was inhaled before escape to try and reduce decompression sickness.
They are not called Toilets they are called "head's" and were not pleasant places to be in. What you thought was a radar is the sonascope for displaying the bearing of any noises in the water. Contrary to what you see in the films a submarine sending out a ping was an incredibly rare event as it gives your presence and position away ! All the springs and damping you see are there to reduce noise (the submariners worst enemy).
You observed the MESS and galley further on. When you looked at and remarked about the captains cabin across from him would be a cabin just as important, the political officers cabin and he was in real terms the man in charge of all his comrades.
If you think the cables you found were big you should see the cables that connected to the towed array, a device that enhances listening by the sonar man. There would also be the bathythermograph to map water temperatures and thermal layers.
UK subs are the best in the world and though still small the bunks are very comfortable and you have a locker under them for your personal effects. It can be a very hard job psychologically but your family (the crew) are always there to help. You would always be doing something so you soon got used to it. Modern nuclear powered boats can stay under for years if they like. It is only food that limits your endurance. Night an Day are indicated by coloured lights changing every eight hours so your biological clock would still function though I don't know if the Soviets used the same system. I expect they did.
I would love to see your face if you went round a "Boomer" the boats that carried the nuclear missiles in vertical tubes. They are HUGE. The Navy is fantastic and you make friends for life that would walk over fire for you. The family unit is close and has to be. In my opinion HMS Raleigh where you did your training was five times harder than the actual active service as it had to be. Failure to complete the program is common and the passing out rate is very low, lots will drop out of this tough training and exercises that push you to the limit physically and psychologically, back then I could do 100 chin-ups ! I would be lucky to do one now !
If offered I would go back this very second. I miss the life, the friends and the feeling of doing something that really can make a difference.
Keep up with your great video's (I know this is an old one) I really share your love of military history :-)

imagine 2 toilets between 75 blokes, no showers or baths on board only a couple of sinks, it was quite normal for the guys not to wash for weeks or even months, it didn't matter that they stunk of BO and diesel as they all did so no one really noticed, the closest they would get to a bath would be a quick dip in the sea while surfaced if they had the chance and it was warm enough! imagine the toilets if the food upset their stomachs! plus it was actually common for those toilets to break down! lol

At 15:45 - the trunking you point out is for the underwater escape system. It's not good if you're claustrophobic or terrified of the water. The submarine would be flooded below the bottom of the extended trunking. You would have emergency breathing gear on, and would duck under the flooded trunking, escaping through the external hatch, exhaling all the way up to the surface. There's a huge tower in Portsmouth, which is part of the Royal Navy shore establishment H.M.S. Dolphin, which is where RN Submarine crews practised escapes - the tower is flooded to the top, and Submarine crews enter it at the bottom, and (hopefully) float to the top, 100 or so feet above.

A slight correction. It could carry either the torpedoes, or the sea mimes, bot both at the same time, as they took up the same magazine space.
Similarly, the nuclear warheads were an optional fit, and would probably be reserved for more capable boats most of the time.

I'm a little bit sad that you skipped over the large gray box at 18:37, the one piece of equipment that looks significantly newer than the rest. My guess is it could be an early satellite navigation receiver, just one line of output for latitude and longitude. Or maybe inertial navigation. The roundish thing at 19:30 could be a gyrocompass. Man I wish I could've been there, would have nerded out over that stuff for hours.

at 6.05 that isnt the radio room its the radar and sonar room, from there they would listen to surface ships and other subs, and could even identify what type of vessel they were listening to by the sound of the screws.

and at 11.02 thats a watertight bulk head hatch, 12.11 those radium dials have radioactive paint on them nice! 15.44 one would be the normal periscope for general viewing the other the attack periscope with which to judge distances etc to calculate the torpedo firing solution. great vid chaps

If you have a look at Oberon Class British submarine, that is a good comparison as it was built around the same period and operated during the Cold War. I've been on a couple of Australian 'O boats' as they were called, as they had 6 of them. The fit and technology were obviously different in terms of look and feel, the west slightly more comfortable and contemporary looking if thats a way to describe, but not that it really matters, but still very small spaces with a lot of moving parts on both subs. They are almost identical in size and speed, but the Foxtrot had amazing range surfaced. Both had same crew size roughly, but the West typically had far less officers, with the Soviets having twice as many based on the doctrine of control. Don't be fooled either by the 'rudimentary' look of Soviet equipment, that is the style, looks that way but often very effective, pity the Alpha Class submarine was never built in numbers; 43 knots top speed and nearly twice the depth of anything in the West at the time as it was the first to use a Titanium hull.

I love the research you put in and the subject knowledge you have to pass on lol....'is that a thingy'...yes prime example of a thingy 😅 and all the dials glowing because 'they are powered up', or maybe just radium dials painted with luminescent paint to operate tactically in the dark or if power does the opposite and goes out. We will forgive radios and sonar, big boxes with dials and tubes. Aside from that and just taking the piss and having a joke, nice video. I love old soviet technology, might not be pretty but worked and robust. Hats off to submariners working in older diesel subs too, when the engines were running and not on electric, the noise, heat and smell you would never get used to. Nice work.

This is soo cool Ian with the history of the U-Boat. Brilliant to see inside one from a persons prospective. How long did it take you to get premission for this explore?. The intro was brilliant. How many times do you see people that are exploring the same place as you?
