George Baltadoros, a pilot in the 331st All Weather Squadron, died on 12 April 2018, aged 34, when the Mirage 2000-5 he was flying crashed off Skyros, returning from intercepting Turkish fighters that had violated the FIR Athens.
According to the official information from the GEA, the aircraft crashed into the sea resulting in the fatal injury of Commander (I) Georgios Baltadoros.
After analyzing the data from the flight recorder of the fatal Mirage, everything indicates that what cost him his life is one of the most dangerous conditions that a pilot can find himself in, vertigo or pilot hallucination.
Vertigo creates a hallucination in the pilot, who at that moment considers that the direction he is following based on the navigation instruments is not the right one and "corrects" the supposedly wrong course.
The phenomenon is usually created after sharp turns at high speed and especially when there is low visibility (so visually you cannot draw a conclusion and there is a visual confusion of sky and sea).
In fact, since the Mirage did not emit a distress signal, it is estimated that the pilot hallucinated his position in space and the direction of the aircraft, resulting in the fatal collision with the sea.
To commemorate the hero's death, the air force placed a Mirage F1 aircraft in honor of the Hero Sminagos (Admiral General after death), Georgios Baltadoros at his place of origin, in Morfovouni, Karditsa.
- Who was Georgios Baltadoros?
He was born in June 1984. He was the father of two children and those who knew him speak in the best words about him. He served in the 114th Fighter Wing at Tanagra. The fatal aircraft had been stationed at the Skyros standby unit during Holy Week as one of the standby aircraft.
Shocking was the interview given by the heroic Sminagos (I) G. Baltadoros to the camera of the Ministry of Defense, "With Virtue and Courage".
In the tribute made by the Squadron Leader who lost his life while performing an ordered service, he describes the reconnaissance mission carried out by the operators and emphasizes that there is danger in every mission.
- What is the historic Mirage F1 aircraft
The aircraft he chooses to honor the Karditsio hero is the Mirage F-1CG with Serial Number (s/n) "113". This aircraft belonged to the force of the 334th All Weather Squadron based in the 126th Battle Group of Heraklion. With this particular Mirage, the late Stelios Demenegas made his last flight, shortly before leaving the Command of the 126th Air Force and who a few years later lost his life in Cyprus, in a National Guard helicopter crash.
The Mirage F-1CG s/n "113", after the suspension of the 334 MPK, had joined the force of the 342 MPK in the 114 AM, until the final withdrawal of the aircraft.
