Having been targeted by an A10, I think they're awesome. They used to practice over the power station all the time. I was out in open country in an electric truck, they dropped down lower and did several flypasts. Quite exciting at the time.
I've seen them in combat...on a really big screen...with really good optics and zoom. I can assure you that even practice runs and being targeted by the A-10 at any time would be a come to Jesus moment if you are playing as the enemy.
@@Deathbomb9 not a lot you can do about in an electric truck limited to 20mph. 2, sometimes 3 would be overhead a few days a month. We just accepted it, just another day.
@@v8trauma that was my reality, but about 2-3 times a week in Afghanistan. But those beasts were on my side lol. Loved having them around, wouldn't want to be on the recieving end for sure. I have a feeling the first time it happened you had so many thoughts, but the biggest thing was "woah, cool". Probably about the first time an AH-64D Apache Longbow popped up over a treeline in a sim arms game and wiped my entire tank platoon from about 600m and we never heard or saw it. To be called and told you're dead then see it, a sight many never get to experience when facing that thing for real, it puts some things into perspective for sure when you already knew what they could do but still ended up as another tallymark on the door. That's just me talking from taking that stuff seriously and knowing it's value. It was my job and I loved it, and adding in other forces and different skill sets you end up at a point where you're essentially the 300 but take very few casualties or injuries and can completely stop the armies of Zercies.
@@Deathbomb9 it never even crossed my mind anything could go wrong. As hazardous as station life was, we were never under fire. Though some years later, odd videos did pop up when mobile phones became a thing. They were rather informative, one was at night from an Apache (later confirmed by a dude at Le Mans. Apparently it was part of an investigation and we weren't supposed to see it blah blah) Three blokes, scampering around, near a tractor. Everything warm was white, then all of a sudden several white streaks and spots of white where people had been. As you say, totally oblivious that the end was near. That was a middle eastern conflict.
Incidentally, you haven't lived until you've listened to two guys pissed as idiots on cheap champagne, arguing about how many blades were on the tail rotor. One bloke repaired the airframes, the other made bits for the gearboxes. Even after a couple of hours of listening to them argue, I still don't know.
@@v8trauma you lost me there for a moment. Are we talking about videos that shouldn't haven been made public but were? I've witnessed a few of those things live. Shouldn't have been saved but then again there's no transfer records on "civilian contractor" laptops. Can't tell you what ones, but some are viewable on this app or there are clips floating around. I've seen video and been front row and center for things I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. War is horrific, but getting to see the skills of guys coming out of it or tactics developed because of it is something that a lot of people don't get first hand. The boys using you and your truck crews as practice were probably operational in desert storm or OEF/OIF.

@@thelegoman1176 it's more like a full load would last about 17.5sec but they never ever carry a full load even if they were facing a near peer force.
They can only fire in 1-2 second bursts purely because of how hot the gun gets
@@humanperson3251 that's not true at all. That gun can fire for almost a minute straight before heat starts to effect accuracy enough to say it matters. The firing of the gun is so violent that it actively slows the plane. It also pushes powder smoke and fumes into the cockpit. 1-2 seconds is what they pull because any longer and the forces effect accurately placing rounds on target, and because that's all they need to paint a large area with enough fire that any more would be a waste of ammunition. It also allows them to have lots of short bursts over a few long bursts. It's not about heat at all. Not even close. It carries less than 200 rounds per barrel.

Agree that the Frogfoot is underappreciated. Don't understand what you mean about the A-6 sticking out like a sore thumb, but everyone forgets you're there. Also agree the Skyraider was awesome! Especially when you're down on the ground, and need someone to fly close air support until you can withdraw or get rescued!!
Yes the A1 skyraider is the best cas ever made. And it's just amazing how useful she was for such an old girl

@@philvanderlaan5942 It's and old WWII US Navy/Marine designation. The "D" in AD-1 meant it was designed by the Douglas Aircraft Corporation. And there's numerous between the B-25 and PBJ. The PBJ is a patrol bomber equipped with radar and used for anti-shipping/submarine role. And like before, B-25 is the then USAAF designation and PBJ is the USN/Marine designation. PBJ meaning Patrol Bomber North American Aviation.

While not exactly a jet, my favorite ground attack aircraft is the A1 Skyraider.
Which did shoot down a couple of subsonic jet fighters back in the day and was credited with saving more lives than the search-and-rescue helicopters that it escorted!
This means that in the age of jets, the A-1 was actually severely underestimated. By both its' own side and the enemy!
out of all the planes at that time, no other threw sticky fire more precise than the a-1
this meant it can provide close air support, closer to friendly troops than any other aircraft

I'm torn between those two... A-10 simply for brrrrrrrrrr and the harrier because it was the precursor to modern F-35s and was simply ahead of its time.

My favorite thing about the A-10 is that it was so well designed for its purpose that despite being outdated for _several decades,_ it’s still in use today because _no one_ could design something that could perform the same combat role better and more efficiently. It is the _perfect_ purpose-built ground-attack aircraft.
