So what do you think of my new airplane? The nickname of "Maggie" was really obvious to me for that airplane. But I just haven't got any nicknames for this one. If you have a suggestion, let me know?

Wow! What a great video. I bought a 235 and am having avionics installed. Hope to fly it in a week or two. For now, I will fly vicariously with you. Mine is variable speed prop, so that will take some getting used to. But I sure do look forward to cruising at around 150 MPH. If you post anymore 235 flying videos or anything else 235 I am your captive audience. Oh, I too had a Cherokee 140 and loved it. It was bright yellow, so I named it "Tweety Bird." I named the 235 "Betty," which is my wife's nickname.
Oh similar path! I do wish I had a constant speed prop though. Pretty much all my videos will be in the 235 until I move on to something else. Which I have zero idea when or if that will be.

The Cherokee is a wonderful platform. I used to own a 180 before stepping up to the Comanche. Congrats on your new bird!
Thanks. I really like this airplane, but I will eventually want to get into a retract. Comanche is one airplane that might be the next one in a few years. Love that airplane.

Congrats on the new bird! Love the avionics. We have a Cherokee 140 in the club fleet with a similar set up and no auto pilot. I agree with you that it’s important to hand fly. I fact I always disengage the auto pilot once I cross the FAF if I’m in one of the other planes that has one. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! That's an interesting strategy re the FAF. My personal strategy is that I will hand fly 3 of my 6HITS in order to retain my instrument hand flying skills. And as I said in the video, hand fly at least 1 hour in other flights.
Congrats on your new 235. My Dad had one when I was a kid and have fond memories of the aircraft.

@@1dullgeek my dad bought it off the side of a mountain and after 6 months of repairs we were flying all over the Midwest. His 235 had the fixed blade propeller too. He taught me how to take off and trim out for level flight in that plane. We then moved to Conn and he sold the plane. With nothing to compare, you don’t appreciate the power until you get in a 150 or 172 for flight lessons. That airplane turned a one week vacation into a 3 day weekend.

That GFC500 is pretty sweet. Think of a drive thru, Remember buttons on the AP are what you order and the FMAs on the G5 are what you get delivered. Never push one without confirming the FMAs after

Congratulations on the new plane! Not what I was expecting. In what ways do you feel this plane is safer? Thanks and enjoy!
1. Better climb rate - helps deal with turbulence - I had a flight in Maggie where I was pitched for Vy and full power, but due to turbulence (downdrafts) I was still descending at 500 fpm. Scared me.
2. Autopilot - helps in IMC, reduces fatigue
3. Carries more fuel
4. Carries more weight - allowing me to carry more fuel
If I were making just short trips this would be less of a concern. But when I want to fly 500+ nm trips these become bigger concerns.
Stuff like that.
Great job, both in the video production and managing the new planes systems. I’m in the same proverbial boat this year. Looking to sell our Cherokee and get into something a little more capable for our longer x-countries.

@@1dullgeek funny you mention that…my Cherokee is in annual right now at a different shop than where I’ve previously gone and the mechanic won’t pass the annual with it installed. He says it needs to be removed for him to do the final sign off but that he doesn’t care if I put it back in between annuals. 🤷♂️ I’m in the market for a Piper Comanche or possibly a Piper Arrow.

Re: arrow or comanche I have the same dilemma. I love that the comanche has a 6 cylinder option. But parts can be complex. Meanwhile the arrow has the opposite.
@@1dullgeek Yep, no 337 paperwork. This shop doesn’t let anything slide, which allows both he and I to sleep soundly knowing the inspections get a fine tooth comb. However, as I’m finding out this annual, there are other shops that have let some things pass by and I am picking up the tab now.
I fly with two other pilots on the field in their Arrows (both 200 hp), which has me searching for a Comanche 250. While their Arrows are capable out here in the West, I am looking for some extra HP to help get over the Continental Divide.
Love my 235. Nothing else like'em. If your ever out in Tucson,,,,,, Mine's a 64. What year?

Question, when you hit "TOGA" button after calling missed does that automatically disconnect autolilot for you. Then it basically does what?
This plane doesn't have auto throttle so does it simply hold wings leveled and adjust trim to pitch up to aomething you preselcted vertical speed to climb

Re: TOGA: it's a button that is connected to the autopilot. And what it does is instruct the autopilot to pitch the airplane for a climb and keep the wings level. Pitch is controlled through the elevator, and wings are leveled through the ailerons - both of which are controlled by this AP.
That's why I go full power *before* pressing TOGA. I don't want the AP trying to pitch up without having sufficient power.

yes, does TOGO on your plane also switch autopilot from approach VLOC to GPS autpmatically as well or not?

No, it doesn't. I found that out recently when trying to fly an ILS approach. The process of going missed on that approach is to fly heading, then switch the source in the G5 from VLOC to GPS. Then hit NAV so that the AP then starts flying the published missed.
The offshoot is that I won't fly ILS approaches unless it's for currency or as a last resort.
