    Ragebait has been a thing for a while - and there's studies about rage/doom scrolling and how its overall contributing to a lot of nasty feelings that people have, about themselves, others, the world, etc. It's cool of you to address this, because it's not something "everyone" knows. I have to remember that I grew up BEFORE the internet so I remember when a lot of these things were transferred into the digital space. But a 15 year old? They were born when it was well underway. Same thing with filters, etc. If its all you've EVER known, how do you spot them?

      That's such a good point. I think for younger people there's not really a degree of separation anymore from your "real" life vs social media. A good point...bullying has always been around and now the kids cannot separate themselves, it's in their face 24/7 with internet....the first 8 yrs of my life had no TV, best years.. we read 'real books' we played family games (snakes and ladders, even scrabble was back then.. card games, and I feel like family was more connected) if you had a nasty bully at school, you left them at school, they couldn't attack you on the internet. 10yr olds committing suicide because of internet bullying is just terrifying!!😢😢😢

    To me, all ragebait is clickbait but not all clickbait is ragebait. Clickbait could be something that piques curiosity- like "making my own foundation?!" As an intro for a video where they use colour theory to mix pigments into their skin colour. Ragebait is the Duxbury foundation method lmao.

    • @alexyssaubrie1606
      @alexyssaubrie1606 Před 3 měsíci +13

      Clickbait used to only refer to a misleading hook to draw someone in. If the video delivers or doesn’t lie at all, I don’t think that should be considered clickbait, unless the definition has changed into something not so bad. When the first term was first created, it was always something bad.

    Tbh I prefer when content creators acknowledge the algorithm and ask you to comment to help them do better within it. Like Robert Welsh, always says something like “comment to help me with the algorithm”. if you like a creator, and if you like their content, you want to help them, however you can help them, and posting a simple comment is not a lot of work to help a creator whose content you enjoy.

    Something I can't stand is when content creators ask questions when you know they have no intention of actually looking at those comments/responses. They'll ask random questions in the middle of doing something else to try to get people to engage and leave comments but those creators are always the people that never ever respond to comments. It feels really obvious and transparent. It's like they have a post-it note in front of them that reminds them at least twice during the video to ask some mindless question they don't care about the answer to. Definitely prefer it when content creators say, "If you'd like, please leave a comment, it really helps the algorithm." That kind of honesty is refreshing. I always leave comments or thumbs up for the creators I genuinely appreciate because I DO want them to get credit for engagement.

    This is why I don’t scroll TikTok. I will go search a certain creator I enjoy and that’s it. When TikTok first came out I was scrolling then wham it was 2-3 hours later. I don’t want to stare at a screen that long. What kind of life is that. I’d rather be outdoors and/or enjoying family and friends.

    This is to a lesser extent but I've also noticed this phenomenon in fashion videos- the creator will put together an outfit and then pick a jacket or a pair of shoes or something that doesn't mesh well at all and leave a "better" option out.

    I think youre right about the clickbate stuff, and that woman slapping on excessive make-up and the sponging it all off and calling it "blending!"😂😂 had us all commenting!! And I remember the shoe crap also, But I was over it all by then and I just flicked past, and I'm starting to watch things, find them stupid and flick past without comment these days. First off, your makeup looks lovely and the eyes are especially pretty. And thank you for mentioning that blush under foundation has been a thing for so long!
    Secondly, as someone who is old enough to remember when the internet wasn't mainstream, we already had a word for clickbait (especially the rage bait ones): Trolling. These people are trolls, and you do not feed the trolls. Don't hatewatch, don't engage, and don't otherwise interact with trolls. You block trolls. If the troll is doing something against site policy, illegal, or actively dangerous, report them but do not engage with them.
    Now, life lesson over, I just want to say that those people cutting open and using a whole container on their face annoy me for two reasons. To start, I just want to know who the hell is cleaning that mess up. They are dripping everywhere, especially the ones in their cars. Are they cleaning it up? I kind of doubt that, because if given the choice between being 'viral' or not having to clean foundation out of carpet and fabric, I'd go with the latter. Which brings me to my last point. If I was going to make that much a mess, then I'd at least make it worth my time by committing to the bit with full body painting. You can get pasties easily enough and flesh toned undies, you cowards. /end of rant

    • @danacrouch9386
      @danacrouch9386 Před 3 měsíci +3

      Stitching a video is a way that people “reply” to a video with one of their own. So part of original video will play and then the person who is stitching has their own video tacked on (sometimes one after another, sometimes side by side). I think that’s it at least!

    Tati just did that for a thumbnail she titled “Goodbye CZcams” and of course she isn’t leaving CZcams which I’m happy about…but I was automatically sad when I first saw the video that of course I was forced to click on even though I new she wasn’t leaving CZcams…but if course I had to make sure and sure enough she just talked about how much harder it is to do CZcams and how much fun she’s having on TicToc…It really made me annoyed because even though I don’t want to see her leave CZcams I still felt the title was grossly misleading almost very much insulting. Why couldn’t she titled it “Disappointed with CZcams” or “I’m loving TicToc”? She knew that we had no choice to click on a title making us think she is leaving CZcams especially since she did leave CZcams once upon a time. The moral of my story is I’m glad Tati isn’t leaving CZcams, but it made me angry that she felt she had to use it as a title to get clicks and views!!!xoxoxo

    We have this issue in the Black community too, people will say the most obviously outrageous bs takes but people will just feel that kneejerk reaction and not think about whether or not platforming this person is exactly what they want in the first place. Like THINK for a minute if sharing this video saying horrible things and giving them engagement by means of 'dunking' on them in their comments is actually benefitting them.

    It's actually not right that the algorithm can't differentiate good and bad engagement. They could analuze likes/comments ratio, the words in comments themselve, among other things. It's just that for a social media platform, it doesn't matter (or it's even positive ‐ some researchers found the facebook algorithm favoured posts with angry reactions over others). I've seen some people suggest angry/upset people would spend more time on social media, therefore they'd spend more time looking through ads inbetween anger-inducing posts. It's not just the creators' faults, the platforms are encouraging and profitting from this.

    Tbh I think a lot of viewers became fascinated with Meredith’s content because a lot of people view it as satire or - if you have no understanding of applying makeup - genuine curiosity in learning how to apply makeup and thinking that applying that much foundation is good. We don’t learn how to apply makeup, it’s something we have to teach ourselves which is why we are seeing teens, tweens and pre-teens sharing skincare and makeup routines. I think it’s worse with skincare because they learn the hard way that some products are not meant for their skin, hence why there has been so much backlash from parents and dermatologists. And I think that these platforms are trying to get us to watch more but we’re not consuming video content like before because there are too many platforms now. That’s why they’re incentivizing creators that create a video longer than a minute, using influencers like talent that is repped by the platform like an agency would.

  • @saru6735
    @saru6735 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I would love to add something:
    its not that the Algorithm doesn’t know the difference- it’s just not important. It’s only important for the Algorithm that WE stay on the platform and engaging a lot. And rage is the perfect tool for it. It works so much better than joy.
    It’s math, it’s cold calculation however this turns out for our civilization…

    Your opening about the algorithm, it kills me that people don't get this. -- I will post shorts about Astarion often, a character women love and a lot of incel men hate. The incel trolly men will keep commenting angry and saying things like, "Stop making me see Astarion videos." Which, ironically, because they commented that on my Astarion video, they will now get more of my videos and more Astarion videos. And if you say that to them, they throw a world class fit telling you that YOU need to change everything about YOURSELF to appeal to THEM, the random troll who doesn't even follow you.

    ragebait is definitely not a new concept (not that you said it was) . it’s been a thing for a long time and i feel like we’ve seen it on tiktok for a while now in various communities. and its been a convo with beauty brands explicitly releasing things that exclude certain groups bc they knew the engagement that would come from people complaining. i explicitly do not engage with that content cuz i just can’t bare to contribute to that. some times the bait is harmless and other times it comes at the expense of others and it’s just so annoying either way.
    also media literacy is at such an all time low, it’s so unfortunate.
