    Louis Edward Curdes was an accomplished flying ace in the USAAF. While flying in his P-51 Mustang he came across an American Douglas C-47 Skytrain that was coming into land at a Japanese airbase. Given a moral dilemma of what to do next he took the step to take out the engines and downed the plane. He was awarded credit for the victory and added an American plane to his tally of German, Japanese and Italian victories. This weird episode of WW2 is even stranger as on the C-47 was his bride to be, Svetlana.

    The fact the pilot wasn't court marshaled for the friendly fire but instead awarded and praised for his actions by not only the crew and passengers but his command is something surprising. I had forgotten about this story until now. Crudes saved a lot of lives that day. I am glad he was not punished for his actions and he made the right call even if it was a tough one to make. I don't know if I could have done the same in his boots.

      If you know how the Japanese tended to treat prisoners of war and civilians during WW2, you'll quickly understand why it was much better for the C-47 to be shot down and ditch in the sea, than land on the Japanese airfield that had just been attacked by American fighters.

    This another idea, Star of Africa, a fighter ace who fought for Germany during World War Two. He was Hans-Joachim Marseille. He was born on December 13th, 1919- September 30th, 1942. He was a very interesting person and as well a controversial person. He disliked the Nazi party and had trouble with many of the rules it imposed on, such as ban on jazz music, helping the enemy (He helped a downed Australian pilot) etc. He was highly decorated ace receiving the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and the Italian Gold Medal of Valour. I thought this might be an interesting pilot to cover and his claims that he scored against the Allies in the North African Campaign.

    If you’re in Arizona you can go see it! pima air and space museum. American flag proudly displayed beside the cockpit. Albeit sheepishly among the single IJN kill about 5 Luftwaffe kills and one Italian kill. one shy of a triple ace, shot out the c-47s engines do i think we’ll call it even. look up the story or read it for yourself on the plaque, just visited today!

      It's a good thing those other kills are there.
      Would suck to have his only kill of the war, be an American plane.

    • @joshuabrown3525
      @joshuabrown3525 Před 2 lety

      The North American P-51D was and still is the best WW2 fighter to fly. It was designed for pilots by pilots. The Merlin engine was extremely powerful and reliable. The cockpit was expertly laid out and everything was right where you wanted it to be. The aircraft was a breeze to fly and was incredibly maneuverable. Also, the plane had plenty of firepower with six .50 caliber machine guns. In other words, it was the perfect fighter for the time. The P-51D wasn't the only version though. Did you know there was a much more powerful and advanced variant, the P-51H, which was designed to take on German Jets? Sadly, that plane didn't serve long as the war ended quickly, and jet fighters took it's place.

    Watched a documentary about the P51. Apparently it was a shite plane .. when they were first issued to the pacific they hated them , then they gave them to the British who put the spitfire merlin engine in it , then it became the beast we know today. Interesting fact which many don’t know .

    Wow. From the comments, I was afraid this was going to be an unhappy one. But it was the opposite.
    Lightning struck twice when this guy ran into the love of his life in the air. He saved her from capture and who knows what else by the Japanese. And that's to say nothing of the C47 pilots who pulled off a textbook ditching and saved everyone aboard. Then, he was spared court martial and rewarded for his tough decision and quick thinking.
    Just a great story all around!
