We had an amazing time exploring the festival and markets in Riga today. We'll be going to an even bigger market in our next video! Enjoy :D
The waffles look mmmm
Oh my god
I live in Latvia but i have never had a baked ants or bees.😅
I think it was some hipsters that made those baked ants and bees. On my opinion that was disgusting.
I love how respectful and open minded you guys are, I know I've commented that before but it's such a rarity in society these days to have people like you :)
Recommended from when I lived in Riga for a month:
Kaņepes Kultūras centrs (awesome outdoor/indoor music venue and bar with great people and good vibes)
Bolderāja 27 (Bookshop/Bar - so cute and quaint - look for the tellytubby hanging outside)
Aleponija (bar that looks like a haunted house - has awesome cat and the BEST Latvian craft beer
Alberta Iela and Elizabetes Iela - both of these streets have the most mind-blowing Art Nouveau Architecture - worth a wonder around here!
KGB House (very sobering experience, VERY informative and gives you some insight)
Paul Stradins Museum (VERY weird museum with latvian and soviet artifacts from medicine and space)
LIDO (chain buffet - huge Latvian buffet HUGE, good food)
When my husband was in the navy, one of the countries he really enjoyed visiting was Latvia, but he learned don't ask what the food is. He said they have amazing food and great beer.
We don't eat bugs .. no ants either.
11 bees and one ant disliked this video. Another great blog guys
😂😂
I left the like|dislike buttons untouched not being bee or ant but being Latvian who dislikes baked insects.
Watching videos like these make me appreciate the country i'm living in! Thank you, super positive video!
That potato waffle thing looked amazing! Allison definitely won! 😋
I never heard of eating bees!!
Us either 🙊
Angela Vlogs Well we dont eat it everyday in Latvia ._.
Angela Vlogs im Latvian and i have neither heard of this🤣😂🤣🇱🇻🇱🇻
As a Latvian I can assure you that ants and bees are not part of the Latvian kitchen. I guess the seller just thought that would be interesting thing to sell.
Our national foods would be meat (mostly smoked pork), fish, mushrooms, rye bread ,cheese and beer... Nothing fancy, but natural and simple.
true
Your friend with the mustache is soooo cute..... two yrs on now still thought you both should know!
3 euro for a glass of beer is expensive by Latvian standards. Average beer in stores costs below 1 euro and the best is a bit above 2 euro. You simply paid the festival extra price.
3 euro for a glass is great for old Riga and street festivals. And tap beer is nothing like a draft ones...
Hi I’m Latvian and I’m so happy you joined the festival and you can eat bees it’s our tradition sveiki 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻
Yesss I've been to that market ...so cool seeing it again
Being a Latvian and seeing the title caught me by surprise - since when do we serve that?
Sklandrausis (the pronunciation of which you got correct by 97% ;D) is mostly consumed and made in Kurzeme, one of the four "regions" of Latvia (the other three being Latgale, Vidzeme, Zemgale) and is included on the European Union's protected food names scheme as a traditional and original specialty food common only in Latvia.
To the comments below for the food prices - a) it is the capital city b)festivals have always high prices c) we are known for being expensive country (sort of).
Mushrooms and dill are indeed a big thing in Latvia. Whenever the chance people go to forest and pick the mushrooms (and it makes them sad when if they go and live abroad such "adventure" is strictly prohibited by law).
Markets are not just a weekend thing, - most of people have gardens but those who don't always go to markets to buy local produce. Had you gone in summer you would see an abundance of berries on display at the markets, too.
P.S. Our food is greasy.
P.S.S. There is bigger chance of you being understood if you use Russian. Some people actually switch to Russian when they hear foreigners because, well, that's just how it is ... ;D (although sometimes people may hear you speak in Russian and think you are local rather than a tourist from Russia).
Hope you enjoyed (or still enjoy?) the stay there! :)
Man ir jautājums vai mēs ēdam bites katrudienu un kapēc viņi nepamēğināja zupas vai kokletes ? Ko kokletes izdarīja ._.
Ervins Zujevs i
Ervins Zujevs we are going to Latvia in December and Norway! My wife is Latvia
im latvian & ive never heard of all those things you ate in your videos
Absolutely love this channel. Be great if you guys had your own TV show on travel channel.
Going back and watching some of the older videos! Always had great content you two.
Nikita is so funny. Watching him stuff his face at the end with a big grin! XD
Very cool Festival! hey there from Riga
Poor bees. We need them badly and they're endangered. Are you sure that it was bees bothering you and not wasps. Bees usually mind their own business and are fascinating to watch.
You guy's are the best! Thanks for the awesome videos.
Aww, thanks so much 🙌
Amazing video my friends.
Been waiting guys!😃
:D
Thanks! Great video!
Great! The atmosphere was really funny, about insects...Well I'm mexican, so it isn't strange! Thank you.
Haha! Yep, Mexico was the first country where we tried insects...I have a feeling we'll be eating many more during our upcoming Asia adventures lol
Im from latvia and this is soo funny thx for the laughs
Your dinner looked lovely :)
Great vid as usual.
Are you planning on visiting Japan? The food and culture there is so interesting.
I grow purple beans in containers on my patio! Was eating some with my dinner tonight!
That's awesome!
I've been in latvia and it's a beautiful nation, yet it's got poverty sometimes due to it being poor, I'm latvian Lithuanian and I love connecting with my latvian heritage and I've also been to Lithuania to connect with heritage and both are great nations, must try spots in latvia and Lithuania are Klaipeda, Vilinius, Liepaja, Riga And Daugavalips (Think its spelt like that)
Heh, I'm lithuanian-latvian, from latvia, though i don't know lithuanian, also its called Rīga and daugavpils,
Great episode Visited Latvia a few years ago and loved it. Alison talking about Dill reminded me of the smell of Riga which is roasting cocoa beans and dill.
We ate so much dill while we were there! It was delicious :)
Cool stuff
My one year old and me love watching you guys and next year il be make by enough money without needing to work so I can just travel for the rest of my life with my family, maybe we can meet each other in Germany one day and show you guys around Saarland, Germany :)
Living next to Centrāltirgus brings back some good memories.
If I ever go anywhere I would try the smoked sausages and meats. It is so true to the place you are at. Even the next town might make it differnt.
"A Bee with little Ant legs"Lol.
Nice guys! Thank You for video. Unfortunately they've closed one of the oldest and loved by the people Āgenskalns market in the January this year. It was really monumental.
I have got to know who's music is this playing in the background? I love it! My wife is from latvia and im from Los angeles and this brings back memories for her.
bees are endangered all over world Surprised to see them sold as novelty food.
Next time try those waffles as well!!
Hey, so watching this in 2018. I'm from Latvia, and I know that I'm a bit late to the party, but I want to give my two cents. Now, eating bees, ants are pretty obvious - we don't eat those on the daily. The Sklandrausis is a big hit or miss, I personally do not like them, but there are people who do.
Ants and bees...I thought only East Asian people had those. But to know the taste of anything I only look for Allison's expressions...they never lie 😂
Nice cinematography. Someone's got a future in film.
i'd like to go to latvia, but i'd go in the middle of summer to spend a day at jurmala beach, heard it's nice. also riga looks interesting. def on my list
We grow those types of beans in the states. The yellow or white almost are called wax beans and if you look in gardening magazines you can find the purple bean seeds for sale to grow as well as the green beans we are used to.
We'll definitely be keeping our eyes out next time we're home! 💜💛💚
Garšīgi! Ñam ñam!
Another great post guys.
There was a program on the BBC the other day in which insects are being looked at as a viable source of food for the world as it's much higher in protein than beef
Well, if the restaurant festival taught us anything, it's that they can be paired with just about anything! We're excited for our Southeast Asia adventures..we have a feeling there will be plenty of creepy crawlers to try 🐛
Great videos! We're heading to Riga tomorrow! Following you guys live on-to-go is magical! Wonder if we'd bump into you hehe~ :D :D :D
Hope our videos are helpful! Sadly we've moved on already 😭
omg, bees and ants
I'm n love wi4 ur channel 💛💛💛
You rock!
I got a cheese danish out of the vending machine and opened the package and popped part in my mouth. I turned over the package to look the ingrediants and was like...oh it's got cinnamon.....nope ants....the entire back of the bun covered in dead ants and loose ants in the package....so I am a risk taker like you guys!
This made Eric and I laugh pretty hard! 😂 We're glad to have a partner in our ant-eating adventures, but I imagine your way was not nearly as exciting or fun... 🍞🐜
Hey guys! Loved your cornish vlogs (I am living in Cornwall at the moment) I actually spent a month in Riga in May, it's a great city with A LOT of history. I can STRONGLY recommend the following places:
Riga Central Market (Rīgas centrāltirgus) - you HAVE to go here! It's the biggest market in Europe and the biggest indoor market in the world! The hangers it is in used to be Zeppelin hangers. You can get Cappuccinos here for just 90 cents and pastrys for just 25 cents! Each hangar is a different product (fish, meat, bakery, etc) and outside is fruit and veg and household goods/clothes. i would recommend spending the day here on an empty stomach and eat your way around the place!
Kaņepes Kultūras centrs - Bar and Live music/film venue - really cool summer space with great beer, great people and awesome vibes with lovely outdoor space
Pauls Stradiņš Museum for History of Medicine - museum with some REALLY unique and interesting displays - the final room is full of soviet space gear!
Bolderāja 27 - (Avotu iela 29, Latgales priekšpilsēta, Rīga, LV-1009, Latvia) VERY cheap and cool bar and bookshop with a Tellytubby above the door
Aleponija - VERY good bar (looks like haunted house from the outside_ has an awesome selection of craft beer (I suggest 'Malduguns')
The KGB building - this used to be the head of KGB and Nazi operations during occupation times - sobering, sad and baffling, very well curated and the tour is a MUST.
I really hope you're planning to go to Jurmala and Sigulda as your town visits - the train there is ancient and hilarious but has the best wifi in the world (yes seriously!!) Jurmala is beautiful and serene with a gorgeous beach - 80ft viewing platform and a spa where you can get really good deals on day experiences for around 40 euros.
Sigulda is best if you rent a bike and travel around the sites, up to the caves and stuff - also try the summar taboganning!
At what point did someone out there decide.... "Hummm.... I know what this cotton candy needs.... Bee's and Ant's !" ? I mean, I can understand it happening accidentally if you're foolish enough to leave your food out for too long, but to eat it on purpose !
Just tree phrases: Latvia is amazing. Ants and Bees are disgusting. You guys are beautiful.
I am planning to visit Latvia soon. Could anyone tell me what time of the year was this filmed?
purple beans are like that. :) It's one of the veggies that we grow next to the office in the summer.
I can't believe we'd never come across them!
Alright! We're totally going to Latvia now just for the food alone. #noants though :D - Trevor
Do it!!! Latvia has been one of our absolute favorite countries so far. The food and culture are pretty great 👌
My kitchen was infested with ants this morning. Is it bad that I'm happy you ate some? Great vlog as always.
interested in seeing what Latvia is like! please take more b roll of the architecture and streets if you can
Well,Aleesers, there are lots of videos on youtube about Latvia and its beautiful capital Riga(in UNESCO world heritage list)you have to simply search them. I am visiting Riga, one of my favorite Europian cities, pretty often. Cheers from Norway.
Ants and bees are free and tasty too
Potatoes covered in dirt is the common marketing form also in germany. If washed they will dry out fast and cannot be stored for longer. You get them also washed though.
We used to be able to buy potatoes with dirt on in most shops in the UK , now you can't and they do not last anywhere near as long.
You guys should have gone to Lithuania also. Beautiful country and amazing food. 🇱🇹
Eating insects is nothing unnatural, save for in first world countries. But it's a sustainable protein source for most of the world. Also, in a wilderness survival course I learned that red ants are an excellent source of vitamin C - i.e. a great way to prevent scurvy.
Pagaršojiet krējumu un melnmaizi vienkārši 👌😌 un aukstā zupa ir lieliska
Sklandrausis the best ;)!
Suggestion!! I'd love if you did like a 'get to know me' whenever you have friends with you! Maybe you have once many moons ago, but I think it'd be neat each time you embark on a trip with another vlogger or friend to dedicate a video to them! Easy content day for you too! ;)
NOW THE guy at 7:56 looks like a very sensible man look at his T shirt . y all :)))) lol
£5 for a burger and £3.50 for a beer in Latvia ??? That is not cheap in anybodys money.
ICECREAMK1NG1 they said Euros not U.K. Pounds
The Euro is virtually 1 for 1 now. So as I said. Not cheap.
ICECREAMK1NG1 Latvia would - and should - be really, really cheap... if it hadn't moved to the Euro
ICECREAMK1NG1 here in Portsmouth, England we have a festival called Victorious. I went this summer and a burger was £7 and a beer, on average, was £5.50/£6. Needless to say I skipped on both haha!
JessicaAmy145 Fascinating. No, really
Sorrel is a common weed in arable crops!
Sklandrausi is very tasty.
My gf is latvian and she loves ants
I live in Latvia
Horray! First :D
you're awesome :D
are you guys planning to visit Asia anytime soon? :D
You guys rock and your Russian friend. 👍👏😁
Right back at ya!
Haha this is nasty... but I'm so tempted to try 😂
I wanna know where Nikita got his hat
More Nikita and Allison please
Hi ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I live at latvia
I live in latvia
Labdien ! I live in The Netherlands and visit your wonderful country on a regular base. I love the culture and the proud citizins but the conversations with them are always to short. I would like to know how Latvijan people live. What about schools, education, healthcare, social welfare and care for old people? How is your quality of life? Sometimes I dream to immegrate to Latvija ...
3,5 euro for a beer in latvia , that's expensive
mlg Freimanis nopee
Riga is one of the cheapest city i have been. Was staying there for 5 days. The food really cheap and the city is nice.
I think Allison won with the food and drink, I like anything containing Gin. The ants and bees looked horrible, I've heard other people say ants get stuck in your teeth :P
She definitely did! And I think we're still picking ant legs out of our teeth 😂
Wow Latvia seems a little expensive... I'd go but the prices here might put me off a little.
It's a pitty that it is not visible what the name of the place is, where you guys bought that burger.
You just cant go wrong with a cheeseburger
True story!
My mother is suffering. I have been suffering. The whole world isn’t going to show up at any police department and say, “here’s everything we have. Stop torturing your own citizens.”
Everyone hates these people.
lai jums labi iet latvijā
Es dzivoju riga
More Nikita....
dill xD
didn't fancy the bugs at all!!!!!!!
I was born in latvia
5 Euro for a cheeseburger is a lot!
I'm Latvian and ive never tried those ants ore beese
I live in Latvia and never had ants and bees
i keep hearing labia
Apparently there is more vitamins in insects than there are in a steak
David Johnson But you started your sentence "apparently"... so that makes whatever follows bullsh*t
Well said... apparently your mother was a virgin until sixteen
David Johnson My mother died at the age of fifteen, during my birth.
Hi,Im Latvian!Vai Ir Šeit Latviete/is?
Wow I gonna stand there next year selling simple burgers for 5 euro.
Gonna be rich at the end of the day
Food in Latvia is excellent and simple burgers definitely will not work. They should be super delicious.
