@@metalvisionsongcontest7055 haha, yeah, i literally swapped him out yesterday now that ikoria released. It was relevant until then. I was so happy about that little uncle analogy that i briefly (very briefly) considered not playing the companion so that i didn't have to break up the family.
fun fact; its not that vampires don't have reflections, its that most mirrors in the time periods they show up in are made of silver and thus wont reflect "evil".
THANK YOU. I've been trying to figure out a direction to take my Edgar deck for YEARS. I appreciate your help to no end. Keep up the good work, guys!!!
Edgar was actually my first commander deck and one that I love continuing to tinker with, so thank you for the suggestions! I would love to see one of this about Ghired!
GhastlyHooligan Edgar was the first precon I bought and I didn’t realize at first how strong he was. I figured there were other comparable commanders running around already and it took me a few games before I realized how completely busted he is. I had no idea how crazy Teferi’s protection was going to be when I bought the deck either and it is worth almost what I paid for the entire deck (either $40 or $45).
Even though I have scoured many a Tatyova, Benthic Druid deck list and recommendation. I would still love to see y’all’s take on it. Keep up the good work.
Great video! One card you missed (which is played in only 8% of Markov decks, so I'm gonna challenge the stats) is Throne of the God-Pharaoh. It is an absolute bomb in a go-wide aggro deck - CMC is only 2 and it does 1 to each opponent for every tapped creature you control. There are also a couple of 1 drop vampires - Vicious Conquistador and Pulse Tracker - which hit each opponent for 1 when they attack. So while you're attacking the guy with no blockers, these cards soften up the rest of the table.
Given that almost every vamp is black, Heraldic Banner seems like an obvious choice. Sub it in for Arcane Signet for a money save with no loss of power and probably a substantial gain. I would also be tempted to include In the Web of War, probably over Door of Destinies. It is more costly at 5 and almost always buffs less. But you can't beat haste and +2 power to keep you relevant after a boardwipe and it is more difficult to blow up than an artifact. Plus you save 10 dollars. I would also look at Vampire Hexmage for those planeswalker emergencies, but it might be unnecessary with so much aggro.
Necroptence is amazing in this deck and doesn't cost that much. Also instead of signets (besides Arcane Signet, because this is perfect in 3+ color decks) I personally use Culling the Weak and Dark Ritual but I might be biased because I heavily skewed my deck towards mono black.
I use "Harsh Mercy" as my board wipe in my person list, and yes it can be situational, but much more often than not it's the perfect card to clear the board enough to swing in for a good attack. But I can't imagine playing a list without "Waves of Aggression" It's a perfect card for the deck as it allows you to keep attacking and puts dead land draws to good use.
Don´t sleep on Sorin, bro. If you get something like a Champion of Dusk off his last ability, you could be drawing 6 cards AND putting a 4/4 body on the field for the measly price of 3 mana. Even a slightly accelerated Bloodline Keeper could be backbreaking for your opponents. Also he's a sac outlet so he gets along with Gravepact-type cards, cards you should be running anyway since, second only to the most dedicated of token decks, you're frequently gonna be the one with the most creatures on board.
Agreed - I've been in a 3-way Commander game where the other two scooped on turn 5 because of how fast Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord allowed me to get moving (on top of Edgar Markov already being a fast deck), and they both were playing very strong decks.
I might be a weirdo but I keep my Eddie deck as a more midrange deck that runs a longer game rather than play mono 1 or 2 drops, because I'm more interested in actually playing vampire tribal than a deck full of things I only run for their cmc. That said though I still made a number of cuts to lower the curve a little because at the end of the day, it's still Edgar Markov.
I also play Edgar for the long game and think it's way more interesting and the games are more diverse due to the effects and abilities of all the mid/high cost Vamps.
What do your guys's lists look like? I'm the same in that I like some of the bigger vamps rather than pure aggro, but find it a bit difficult to stay in the game
@@Liamitis scryfall.com/@Terraphiel/decks/501244de-2f1a-40a4-98ad-51bb3752ae44 It's probably a little light on Interaction but still I get pretty good results, might just be the Meta I encounter though.
Honestly, as far as the next upping the average, despite just doing a mardu deck, I'd like to see Alesha, since I feel like there's a bifurcation in her lists between aristocrats and aggro or semi-aggro, and just with the edhrec suggestions, and especially the average deck lists, it seems difficult to see which parts of either shell are core to that shell and which are maybe more in one direction, but are worth putting in the other shell, just out of being good value for her deck. Like. for instance, if I'm running an aggro shell, is Zulaport Cutthroat still worth an include, since I still expect stuff to die in combat, or in the opposite case, should I run Master of Cruelties in an Aristocrats build, even though it doesn't do much for that synergy, and it pretty lackluster without alesha, but has a lot of upside, even if it's tangential to an aristocrats strategy?

I love the sinergies of afterlive with Eldrazi Monument it means you allways have a board and if you play enough graverecursion, your permanenty a threat, as long you can save your monument.
How about carnival of souls to pump out a huge early board? Something else I noticed is for an aggro deck, 33% of our lands come in tapped. That just doesn't feel right to me.
For what it's worth, every time I cast Butcher of Malakir, the whole board has to struggle for an answer. I know she's expensive but when she drops in, she's an instant problem for everyone I'll also say that Sorin is super thematic and bloodlord in particular is a great option for utility. He can buff a single vampire in a big way, cheat out the more expensive ones like Butcher or Patron of the Vein or even just give us some removal +drain. Honestly I know he's not anything to write home about, but he's Edgar's Grandson I just gotta have some form of him in the deck lol
I've been a fan of Idol of Oblivion in aggressive, token-based decks, perhaps it could do some work in this as well. I also love Winds of Abandon to clear the way for a ton of creatures, but it can be dangerous if you can't safely remove players after it resolves.
I think there are too many tapped/bounce lands in this deck,. It's an aggressive deck but the since it has a lot of lands that come in tapped it would actually slow it down. Ayara isn't a vampire and has a rough casting cost but being able to drain two for every black vampire you cast seems great. She lets you turn your tokens into card draw too. Species Specialist and Idol of Oblivion have a lot of potential in Edgar too imo EDIT : Hellrider is another non vampire that can help speed up the game
You bring up a valid point. As much as I love the combat phase, you’re going to hit the point where you simply run out of gas sometimes in a game with this deck. Vito actually might be better than Exquisite Blood, since it shaves two mana off of the cost.
@@derekwalter4238 You are absolutely right. I had my Markov deck solely set to buff vamps. I then realized that there HAS to be another wincon in the deck. So I revamped it, so to speak, by adding Vito, Sanguine Bond and Exquisite Blood. Now, the deck can either pump vamps or go for the life gain and drain
@@marcellusjordan5681 I am building Edgar Markov as my firstbcommander deck but I go for 3 win conditions I do the agro/lords thing but also have the sanguine combo as a last resort I have sack outlet/wipe shenanigans With ashnods altar/bloodartist and bloodcrazed paladin or yahenni to punish a wipe with massive damage and or a giant vampire to rogue passage I put demonic, vampiric, enlightened and grim tutor in it to silver bullet. Also since I gain life so much Inadded necropotence too so I dont rin out of gas I chose vindicate and anguished unmaking as spot removal together with new blood to steal their commander It is getting there but I have not been able to tune it I run red elemental and pyroblast to protect the sanguine combo but I might remove one as i can tutor
@@derekwalter4238 Damn, you got schmoney. I was going to go with the direct damage, gain and drain effect. Running the same enchatments but with Purphorous and Morgis Edgar was my first commander and then I stopped showing it attention and went from Vamps to Zombies. So, now my commander is Varina Lich Queen
You aren't playing tribal right if you aren't slamming a coat of arms. Also this had some great ideas for Mardu Human tribal with Shared Animosity Mercadia's Downfall Mirror Entity Door of Destiny Vanquisher's Banner
I used to be much higher on Night's Whisper but I have been liking it less after I realized that it only adds one new card to your hand vs. having another playable card.
I wish I could pull out butcher of malakir. I understand that he's got a ridiculously high mana cost, and even if I am desperate for his effect dictate of erebos or edict are both better just for mana reasons, but I can't, he's just so fuckin cool
Mardu combat sadly isn't really viable in multiplayer commander.. So I turned my Edgar in an Aristocrat deck with a few non-vampire oddballs (still about 25 vampires, so the synergy remains). Do think you missed one of white's finest cards with Smothering Tithe. Yes, it's mentioned alot.. maybe too much.. But it can blast you forward into a game so much, especially if some opponent's strategy involves wheeling and takes the risk.
Why do you say Mardu combat isn't viable? I'm pretty new to the game, admittedly, but I have no issue attacking over my opponents with how many ways I can buff my board
@@taa347 In a 4-player free for all game, a board wipe is very likely and against any aggro deck it is devastating. You're probably out of steam with that version, while a board with tokens that drain can get you some more value.
Blade of the bloodchief is awesome and has actually won me many games. Plus if you can get it onto an Elanda or Bloodtracker there is a ton of value to be had. Even if you dont get it on one of those 2 the potential to pump up a vampire by A LOT is there. Plus as an equipment unless someone destroys it, it will stick around indefinitely. You also say you want low to the ground vampire but knight of the ebom legion is too clunky? Its naturally going to get bigger over the course of the game whether or not you use the second ability, and there are times where that deathtouch can come in handy. Sorin imperious bloodlord in my opinion is one of the best Vampire planeswalkers. the +1 makes your vampires bigger and has the added bonus of lifelink. yes the minus ability does not trigger Edgar BUT you still can get a free vampire out if it Utter End my be single target removal, But its an Exile effect and hits ANY permanent, and its instant speed.
In a deck with a low curve, Twilight Prophet didn’t work for me at all. And that’s too much money to spend for little return. Any other low cost vampire will do.
I would run way more 1 mana vampires and btw knight of the ebon legion is a 1-drop that growths hopefully every turn, i think thats as good as it gets for a 1-drop
So close and yet so far... I like some of the improvements like Shared Animosity Disappointed with the final decklist keeping Kindred Charge, Vanquisher's Banner and Syphon Mind (sorcery speed) when there are better and cheaper options, e.g. Thrill of Possibility Succumb to Temptation Boros Charm (all modes relevant) Death Denied (boardwipe recovery) The 5+ CMC creatures make it a bit tougher to rebuild even with a full grip. Consider all the one/two drop vampires from Ixalan and both Innistrad blocks.
Tariq Maketab boros charm is not equal or lesser $value$ than any of your suggested cuts (that was one of the parameters of his suggested modifications). There is nothing wrong with vanquishers banner, making your vamps cantrip in a deck that just wants to cast a bunch vamps for cheap is great. Every green deck is running beast whisperer and guardian project, vanquisher’s banner is that for mardu colors. Kindred charge is red overrun/craterhoof the more lords you have out the better and this deck has a ton of lords. Siphon mind could be any other form of card advantage and I don’t really care one way or the other, it doesn’t have synergy but it’s very efficient in a commander pod. You must be trolling with thrill of possibility, it is not even card advantage. If you have access to black, you are not running card draw from red or white. Nights whisper and sign in blood or read the bones or anything that actually gives you more cards than you put into it like siphon mind.
@@jakeapplegate6642 Boros Charm is only $2.00 more than Unbreakable Formation for the flexibility, and recall that it's not just about the price but the value the card gives. Are you seriously defending running sorcery speed 4cmc card draws in a deck that runs on speed? By your logic Faithless Looting is a troll card because it has "no card advantage". I don't mind Vanquisher's Banner but it doesn't make sense to run both it and several 4/5+ CMC spells if the goal is critical mass, which is why I suggested the smaller bodies. Is that also inadvisable?
Tariq Maketab it is about the price. He said that the cards he would be suggesting in the video would cost less or the same in $money$ meaning it would be hard to get boros charm in without pulling a more expensive card according to the rule he laid out for himself in the video. Instant speed card draw doesn’t make the deck run faster if you’re drawing into creatures that you’re casting main phase. Faithless looting is a good card because it is efficient and repeatable and it lets you see a lot of cards but it is not card advantage. Markov wants to refill its hand after you drop a bunch of cheap creatures and siphon mind and vanquishers banner do that where faithless looting and other looting effects absolutely do not. Instant speed drawis good if you’re running a lot of interaction and removal that is also at instant speed, otherwise it really doesn’t matter. Looting through a lot of cards is good if you’re trying to assemble a combo otherwise you’re better off just drawing and playing as many cards as possible.
@@jakeapplegate6642 so you do agree with me that he should dump the 4/5+ CMC creatures in favor of more 1/2 drops, but disagree just on Boros Charm and instant speed draw?
Tariq Maketab I agree that boros charm is great for the deck but I don’t see how he could have included it in the video with the restrictions he was working under. The curve is kinda a meta call imo, 1-2 drops net a lot of value because of markovs ability but there are some of the 4-6 drops are near game ending haymakers or removal on a stick I like some of the bigger bombier vamps and my meta is relatively slow. In general faster is better but I like bloodwitch, anwon ruin sage, patron of the vein. I also run possibility storm for the extra cast triggers and the lols 😂
TheBuildKing The series is still new, so making videos featuring some of the most popular commanders makes it more accessible. Give it time, I'm sure lesser known commanders will be featured once this series is established.
I know that this is an "upping the average" video but I'd like to take a moment to "challenge the stats" I noticed you didn't cut skullclamp, yet you run several anthem effects. Skullclamp is basically useless. If my equipped creature is 5/4 or larger even as a blocker I won't get it to die most of the time. Drawing 2 cards on a board wipe might be ok, but why not something more reliable and controllable? The best part of skullclamp is killing 1/1 to draw 2 cards on my turn and all these anthems defeat that function. Thoughts on running Idol of Oblivion? I think being able to activate it and drawing 1 card per turn I cast a vampire is more reliable in a deck with this many anthems. My locust go deck though, that LOVES skullclamp haha
I disagree slightly about Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord. HIs first +1 allows you to put a +1/+1 counter on your creatures (which are all vampires) as well as give death touch and lifelink and his second +1 ability turns your vampires into a Lightning Helix. I know this video came out in a pre-Vito/Indulging Patrician world, but there is so much combo potential with Sacrificing a Bloodghast to deal 3 damage and kill another creature, gain 3 life, and put 2 +1/+1 counters on all your Vampires from an Cordial Vampire then play your land for turn and return Bloodghast to the battlefield. If you add in some Vito/Patrician shenanigans you should be dealing 6 damage to one opponent and 3 to each other and all that for zero resources. But the creme de la creme is Sorin's -3 ... yes it bypasses Edgar's Eminence trigger since you are not casting the spell, however anecdotally I used that to put a Malakir Bloodwitch into play, bypassing the counterspell that would have been cast otherwise, draining 10 from each of my opponents killing 2 of them (it was a 5 player game) doming another for 40 with Vito's trigger killing him, and leaving the board with one opponent at 4 life and me at 72. It was quite the coup de grace.
Mirror Entity would be a flavour fail - vampires don't have reflections when they look in the mirror, so what should the entity mirror? 😜
Vampires don't have reflections, because the mirror entity stole them all (or is simply borrowing them). In this case mirror entity is more like peter pans shadow. ;)

Derek Walter my apologies. It’s been a while since I’ve messed with the combo. And your point is well taken. Creatures are more susceptible.
@@marcellusjordan5681 I am building Edgar Markov as my firstbcommander deck but I go for 3 win conditions
I do the agro/lords thing but also have the sanguine combo as a last resort I have sack outlet/wipe shenanigans
With ashnods altar/bloodartist and bloodcrazed paladin or yahenni to punish a wipe with massive damage and or a giant vampire to rogue passage
I put demonic, vampiric, enlightened and grim tutor in it to silver bullet.
Also since I gain life so much Inadded necropotence too so I dont rin out of gas
I chose vindicate and anguished unmaking as spot removal together with new blood to steal their commander
It is getting there but I have not been able to tune it
I run red elemental and pyroblast to protect the sanguine combo but I might remove one as i can tutor
@@derekwalter4238 Damn, you got schmoney.
I was going to go with the direct damage, gain and drain effect. Running the same enchatments but with Purphorous and Morgis
Edgar was my first commander and then I stopped showing it attention and went from Vamps to Zombies. So, now my commander is Varina Lich Queen
Legions landing dit not come in the precon its a card from ixalan its also a land and its easy
What about "Pact of the Serpent" instead of "Minions' Murmurs"?
You aren't playing tribal right if you aren't slamming a coat of arms.
Also this had some great ideas for Mardu Human tribal with
Shared Animosity
Mercadia's Downfall
Mirror Entity
Door of Destiny
Vanquisher's Banner
I used to be much higher on Night's Whisper but I have been liking it less after I realized that it only adds one new card to your hand vs. having another playable card.
Gotta put that blood tribute back in because of Vito 🤣
You should do this again with all the new vsmpires!
I wish I could pull out butcher of malakir. I understand that he's got a ridiculously high mana cost, and even if I am desperate for his effect dictate of erebos or edict are both better just for mana reasons, but I can't, he's just so fuckin cool
Can you do s video for
Anje please
Please remake this now that there are a wide variety of new vampires and goodies for this deck
please do a inalla deck, the average deck need some improvements of some obscure cards that only you guys know!
Sorin imperious bloodlord in my opinion is one of the best Vampire planeswalkers. the +1 makes your vampires bigger and has the added bonus of lifelink. yes the minus ability does not trigger Edgar BUT you still can get a free vampire out if it
Utter End my be single target removal, But its an Exile effect and hits ANY permanent, and its instant speed.
In a deck with a low curve, Twilight Prophet didn’t work for me at all. And that’s too much money to spend for little return. Any other low cost vampire will do.
I have the same experience with this. Way better option for same CMC would be Minions Murmurs.
Imagine cutting sanguine bond and not just swapping blind obedience for exquisite blood
I would run way more 1 mana vampires and btw knight of the ebon legion is a 1-drop that growths hopefully every turn, i think thats as good as it gets for a 1-drop
I would suggest Reconnaissance.
I know it's probably going to sound weird but Gisela blade of goldnight
I would keep Demonic Tutor
Dolmen Gate.
Can we do Emry nxt
Judith
So close and yet so far...
I like some of the improvements like Shared Animosity
Disappointed with the final decklist keeping Kindred Charge, Vanquisher's Banner and Syphon Mind (sorcery speed) when there are better and cheaper options, e.g.
Thrill of Possibility
Succumb to Temptation
Boros Charm (all modes relevant)
Death Denied (boardwipe recovery)
The 5+ CMC creatures make it a bit tougher to rebuild even with a full grip.
Why in the hell is he doing such OP commanders? First Muldrotha and now Edgar. How about some underated/hidden gem commander?
TheBuildKing The series is still new, so making videos featuring some of the most popular commanders makes it more accessible. Give it time, I'm sure lesser known commanders will be featured once this series is established.
A Non-Black graveyard synergy deck. Let's see how much of a necromancer you really are!
Not enough people play eddy. Thanks
Not fast enough
