  • 2020 was a year that I finally tackled some of the big projects in our home. The attic loft was one of them. When we moved in, we had no idea there was a huge space above our master bedroom and bathroom, it wasn’t until I knocked a hole in the wall and found a huge space that had potential. Now, it serves as my office and storage, as well as a little nook and library.
    This video will go into some of the details on how we insulated, ran the electrical, cable, and internet into the room and the start of drywall.

    Dude….You need junction boxes or get pod lights with enclosed junction connectors.

      Yeah, I agree. Definitely not an ideal way to make it work.

    i thought you werent supposed to insulate all the joists to allow airflow to go up thru the roof?

    • @HomeMadeNew
      @HomeMadeNew  Před rokem

      Yeah true. But I’m putting a new roof on with metal and air flow baffles.

    I’m just starting a similar process. Wanted to see your insulation details. I’m planning on putting baffles under the roof decking and then R38 bats. What R value did you end up with and was it sufficient for a comfortable living space
    Thanks.

      Yeah, that's a good idea. I'll be redoing the roof anyways and adding some ventilation as well. The ceiling has R19 I believe. That's an older roof, some roofs have 2x6 so if that's the case go with something thicker id say.

      Related question, as you mentioned ventilation. I was wondering how air flow in your attic and rest of your house worked after doing the insulation the way you did. I'm curious as to what your new plan.
      For reference on attic/roof airflow, here's a quick video: czcams.com/video/slhn9RiqHK0/video.htmlsi=2PX1UK75T0SBl1uK

      Im pretty sure he messed up the insulation process in the ceiling. He should've left a a gap between the insulation and the roof for airflow. The way he did it is suffocating the roof, creating moisture and its a matter of time til it gets full of mold and mildew. Theres no air vent.

    So no batts before the insulation? Not worried about ruining your roof?

      I’m redoing the exterior of the roof within the year or so. I do have another roof pitch in the right side.

    Awesome work, I will be doing something similar above my garage so this has been super helpful!

    Was this permitted work? Id be surprised if that R19 insulation was sufficient. Even in the southeast they require at least R30.

      Hi, I saw you connect the high hat with some wire nuts and push the wires in the wall without a box I wasn’t sure if that was legal or safe?

    Shouldn't run ethernet wire with 120 volt electric in a pipe.
