    Thank you so much for explaining about the reason of not catching a glimpse being the reason that jet was used.

    Oh, I love love language of flowers! I have a whole series of cards that I do that is precisely that! So much cool info about the jewelry. I have a ‘mourning’ necklace, a heart locket filled with hair from my previous cat companions. It hangs from a black velvet ribbon. Thanks, Katherine as always.💗

    Awesome video, I didn’t know about the whole reflection superstition. You may have already seen it, but Sundae Baubles has just done a fantastic live here on CZcams all about mourning jewellery, including how to differentiate jet, bog oak, vulcanite and gutta percha- if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it!

    Thank you so much for posting about this type of jewellery. I live in England so I hope I come across an affordable piece soon. I loved the lucite piece but I also loved all the other ones 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

      I totally get the price thing! Most of the pieces I found were under $20. The lockets were more expensive. I think in the US we have more mourning style pieces. I bet there are some amazing ones across the pond where you are!

    Fun fact! Vulcanized refers to the process of Vulcanization which is what they called the process of making liquid sap from the rubber tree hard! Most likely seen referring to things like galoshes or those old yellow rain slickers. I only know this from reading Victorian era lit and Steampunk/Gaslamp Fantasy stories. They had some really interesting words for things back then that we don't use much anymore which is a pity.
    Your jewelry is lovely and I did learn a few things!

    • @KatherineYoung
      @KatherineYoung  Před 3 lety

      Oh neat! Vulcanized galoshes could totally be a band name! 😆🤪 I find the steampunk alternate reality concept fascinating!

    I only have one or two pieces because it is so hard to find in my area. The loose hair was made into "rats" which were pieces of fine netting filled with your loose hair from the reciever. Then it was a base that you put your hair combed over it to give it a shape that was also the correct color since it was your own hair to begin with.

    • @KatherineYoung
      @KatherineYoung  Před 3 lety

      Yes! I actually cut out me calling them rats because I thought it would freak people out! Lol
      I for sure have found the best pieces online. I have gotten lucky with some of the brooches in the style of mourning. I don’t pay up for them nearly as much as they probably are worth.

      It is a good way to distinguish true mourning pieces from those made later or in the style of mourning.
