    I've heard that wild hedgehogs eat poisonous plants and then anoint to make their quills extra irritating to predators

  • @meeep558
    @meeep558 Před 9 lety +56

    A wild hedgehog will anoint to mask their own scents and will anoint with toxic plants to make their quills extra irritating

      @fuckafuckafucka Před 6 lety +2

      This makes sense because hedgehogs are tolerant to snake venom. I wonder if they anoint themselves with snake venom when they eat them.

    maybe they anoint because in the wild they need to blend in with their environment and mask their sent from predators

    • @Velocity_YT
      @Velocity_YT Před 3 lety

      Yup. That's the reason. Their main enemy's are badgers. Since badgers have sharp claws they can dig into a hedgehog's skin and eat them. However hedgehogs have realized that while they have poor eye site so they can only see up close, badgers on the other hand are completely blind so they have to rely on their sense of smell to find food. However if that food of theirs smells like dandelion or or something else that they wouldn't eat they wouldn't eat it of course. That is why hedgehogs anoint themselves. To hide their true scent.

  • @erinsperry8441
    @erinsperry8441 Před 8 lety +7

    anointing is when they capture the scent in spit bubbles and put it on their quills so that predators can't smell their scent as well

    African Pigmi Hedgehogs anoint so that they smell like their surroundings and in return are able to avoid being eaten by a predator. The idea of anointing is based on the "I cannot see you so you cannot see me" mindset.

  • @kennethyoung5936
    @kennethyoung5936 Před 5 lety

    They do it because in the wild they lick or eat poisonous things to cover their quills etc for protection and it can last upto a week or more sometimes. Tame ones do it out of love and to show appreciation.

    I read that they eat vegetables (green beans) so I fed mine one. I was horrified when I saw him licking foam from his mouth onto his quills! I thought I had poisoned the poor guy! I quickly got him to take a bath and removed it all. Then I looked it up and found it was called anointing and they just trying to mask the new scent to their body to blend in with the environment.

    • @Mesmosar
      @Mesmosar Před 7 lety +5

      Calvin W What are you talking about?? Hedgehogs are by no means an "easy" animal to take care of! Please do not purchase a hedgehog if you think it will be the same work as owning a hampster! Hampsters do not need everyday baths, a light / heat controlled room, a very special diet, fleece bedding, special running-wheels, etc. Oh and hedgehogs are prone to many many more diseases than hampsters! and lets not forget that hedgehogs will attempt to hibernate (most likely die) if there cage temperature goes below 20-22 degreed celsius. So please, do not go around telling people hedgehogs are as easy to take care of as a hampster, when you have never owned one before.

    • @Mesmosar
      @Mesmosar Před 7 lety +3

      Calvin W and if your hedgehog is not allot of work, it means you're not being a proper caregiver and not putting enough effort towards the headghogs health/wellbeing.
