Yup. That's the reason. Their main enemy's are badgers. Since badgers have sharp claws they can dig into a hedgehog's skin and eat them. However hedgehogs have realized that while they have poor eye site so they can only see up close, badgers on the other hand are completely blind so they have to rely on their sense of smell to find food. However if that food of theirs smells like dandelion or or something else that they wouldn't eat they wouldn't eat it of course. That is why hedgehogs anoint themselves. To hide their true scent.
Thank you for posting all of these videos. We just got a hedgehog this week, and my kids and I have been watching a lot of your videos and learning a lot. Super helpful!
African Pigmi Hedgehogs anoint so that they smell like their surroundings and in return are able to avoid being eaten by a predator. The idea of anointing is based on the "I cannot see you so you cannot see me" mindset.
@@cinnamonslice there’s no such thing as a “hedgehog expert” don’t be ignorant, that’s like me asking you, are you an idiot expert? Apparently from your stupid question, they most likely know a lot about animals and study the field of animal science and biology.
They do it because in the wild they lick or eat poisonous things to cover their quills etc for protection and it can last upto a week or more sometimes. Tame ones do it out of love and to show appreciation.
I read that they eat vegetables (green beans) so I fed mine one. I was horrified when I saw him licking foam from his mouth onto his quills! I thought I had poisoned the poor guy! I quickly got him to take a bath and removed it all. Then I looked it up and found it was called anointing and they just trying to mask the new scent to their body to blend in with the environment.
Calvin W What are you talking about?? Hedgehogs are by no means an "easy" animal to take care of! Please do not purchase a hedgehog if you think it will be the same work as owning a hampster! Hampsters do not need everyday baths, a light / heat controlled room, a very special diet, fleece bedding, special running-wheels, etc. Oh and hedgehogs are prone to many many more diseases than hampsters! and lets not forget that hedgehogs will attempt to hibernate (most likely die) if there cage temperature goes below 20-22 degreed celsius. So please, do not go around telling people hedgehogs are as easy to take care of as a hampster, when you have never owned one before.
Calvin W and if your hedgehog is not allot of work, it means you're not being a proper caregiver and not putting enough effort towards the headghogs health/wellbeing.
I am so glad a i watched this because I am getting a hedgehog soon and if they did this it would have confused me xx thank you so much you explained it really well xxxx
Few questions ! 1.Does the spit from anointing wear off? 2.can you pet them when the froth is on them? 3. do u give them bath after or does it not stain? Thank you and I hope to be answered soon it's urgent thank u so much!💝🐹
I love hedgehogs but anointing is disgusting and would be the only thing to stop me from owning one ... I think I would always keep a packet of wipes near by to clean them ... otherwise completely adorable
I've heard that wild hedgehogs eat poisonous plants and then anoint to make their quills extra irritating to predators
A wild hedgehog will anoint to mask their own scents and will anoint with toxic plants to make their quills extra irritating
This makes sense because hedgehogs are tolerant to snake venom. I wonder if they anoint themselves with snake venom when they eat them.
Pointy Hedgehog, Oh pointy pointy...Anoints itself, anointy-nointy.
So if you give them a blueberry will they turn into sonic ⁉
+Rameesah Islam If they like it, yes. Strawberries if you want Amy.
I laughed so hard I choked
Oranges if you want tails
yeah, and blackburrys if you want shadow!
Claireisnotonfire Tails is a fox...
maybe they anoint because in the wild they need to blend in with their environment and mask their sent from predators

anointing is when they capture the scent in spit bubbles and put it on their quills so that predators can't smell their scent as well
She just wants to be a rainbow hedgehog

My hedge was nibbling on my shirt and started to Do this and I was confused but now I know, I guess he likes my smell/taste lol. Great video!
Since it's a smell they like, couldn't it be possible that they do it to attract other hedgehogs?

Calvin W you got a hedgehog before knowing this!!?? smh
Calvin W I own a hedgehog too but it doesn't annoint
Why not? They're an interesting pet and not hard to take care of. I had hamsters before so not really much difference.

Very cool and informative. Thanks for posting!
Aww, so cute!
This is basically hedgehog asmr
How cute! Sid does it, too!
I am so glad a i watched this because I am getting a hedgehog soon and if they did this it would have confused me xx thank you so much you explained it really well xxxx
why do none of the videos about hedgehogs on yt mention this!!!!!!!
soooo cute
researchers think they do this as added protection
Well hedgehog are high resistance to venom or poison, so wild ones eat posion herbs and do this to keep predators at bay.
how peculiar! very cute though =) x

She is going to be a pretty rainbow
soooo cute for christmas give her green veggies and strawberries lol
You should take her to anointing of animals so she can be blessed
lololol
Ok.... Thanks!!!!
I am hoping to get a hedgehog for christmas. Can you give me a list of pros and cons of owning a hedgehog
I think yes
my hedgehog did this tonight and it scared me so bad i thought he was having a seizure and then i thought he had rabies
Lmao..lolol
❤
she is so cute I want to give her a lot of kisses
Aww lol 😂
I think hedgies do this cause they be like mmmm I save some for later
rofl I'm dying
its actually to protect themselves from animals that want to eat them in the wild.
Hedgehogs anoint themselves as a defense mechanism (usually toxins in nature). Look a scientific paper by Edmund Brodie Jr.
were getting 4 cages and were also breeding them
do you have a video on what vegetables to feed hedgehogs? @snowdrophedgie and if you dont can you make one?
Pretty much all vegetables :3
My brother in law was telling me about this as his hedgie does it. I've never seen it for myself though. How strangely interesting lol.
My hedgehog does does that with cilantro too XD
Mine always bites my pillow the does that
I want one of those but I don't know if they're legal in Colombia :(
So do you need to give her a bath after she anoints herself or do you just leave it there?
What veggies do you recommend?
My hedge doesnt anoint... Ive been waiting for her to do it forever
can you make a video about female vs male hedgies? I am looking into getting a pet hedgie and wondering if I should get a female or male.
Does it stain their quills
Disgusting yet still very cute
was the video kind of green for anyone else besides just me
Ayver Graham for me it wasn't really
Ayver Graham at all
ok, I found out that my monitor was going out. thanks for replying
I think they anoint so they smell like vegetables so carnivores wont eat them
They already have quills, which already scare of the predator.+they are fast runners.
ShayminFTW
well what if they get caught by a honey badger who doesn't care about qills
Lol honey badger don't care reference they are native where honey badgers aren't so they aren't threats
then I don't know why they do it.
they do it to keep the predators away , so you are right
Do u usually wash teasel after he Annoints
Should you wash it off after or leave it there? lol
Maybe she annoites because when she gets hungry and wants that food they lick it when there hungry and so there not hungry anymore:)
3 hours and I get my hedgehog
My prickle bottoms does that with coffee
Do you wash it out or just ignore it?
Awwwwww!
It turns into Shaymin (when it anoints) a grass hedgehog pokemon :)
Isnt it to cover up their smell from predators?
Theres a hedgehog called luna on vine... any relation? XD cuz shes so cute!
Data base makes more sense
My hedgehog does this everytime she licks the inside of my elbow cx
Who found in recommended list?
My hedgehog dose/try's to do this with my deodorant... Lol
does anyone know any hedgehog breeders that sell them cheaper than 100
Do you wash her after she anoints?
•PURPLE UNICORN• probably my hedgehog dosent anoint
maybe they just want to get the siliva off (cant type)
Hi! is it safe if you got bitten by a hedgehog?
My hedgie doesn't like veggies
'-' Hedgies are solitary creatures, you shouldn't get more than one unless you wish to breed them, or keep them in four completely different cages.
Can they eat celery?
No!
do hedgehogs shed?
Yes
I came here because of scishow.
Also, do they like mangoes and apples?
Fruits are supposedly bad for hedgehogs.
NoirComics a
Are you Hoppinghammy?
im getting 4 hedgies
I love hedgehogs but anointing is disgusting and would be the only thing to stop me from owning one ... I think I would always keep a packet of wipes near by to clean them ... otherwise completely adorable
Anoint? I think you mean hedgie guac
How do you get that off of her? Do you use a towel?
you dont need to get it off :) its safe for them
Ok, thank you very much :3
Teazel is a pinto, correct? I have a pinto baby named kahlua (called kahli for short) :)
My hedgie has yet to do this :(
what happens if they eat skittles? XD
lol
they will get sick, and need to visit the vet if given too many.
I had my hedgie Sonic out on my bed to explore for the first time yesterday and he anointed with my bedsheet. They look so cute when they anoint!
You should noot feed them blueberries they make there tumies hurt and have green poop.
I think maybe your the one that needs to calm down. She was simply informing everyone that blueberries is not something to feed a hedgehog
Ok whatever no need to get butthurt.......:/
+Rameesah Islam sdfu
please tell me. do male hedgehogs do this??
All hedgehogs anoint
lol ok thanks! i find it really cute and im getting mine in five days so and hes a male and i wanted him to do it lol :)
Lol im getting one on Saturday and its a female i don't really want her to anoint that much idk i kind of find it gross but its there natural thing.
oh cool! what are you gonna name her? i hope she is nice! :)
i really like the name hazel haha she is only 9 weeks old so im happy i get to get her young :)
Do any other animal annoite ?? Please get back!:)
I don’t think their anointing is supposed to be green
Maybe it's the thing to keep the males away unless the males do it to
they do
hedgies don't like human interference, so leave her alone.
NASTY.......
