- In this video I take a look and compare a late 2021 Hasbro 1/18 G.I. Joe figure to Hiya Toys new 1/18 G.I. Joe figures. Early 2021 and o-ring figures pop in for a visit also. Which is better?

Honestly they really need to keep making the 4inch line. I really enjoy collecting ‘em
Agreed.
HEAR! HEAR!
they are .... just slowly
@@OptimusMonk01 True 🥲🥲
I missed out of the GI Joe 25th anniversary series and only got into 1/18 scale thanks to the Fortnite toyline from Jazwares. I never really understood the hate that the Retro line got and was very disappointed to learn of its discontinuation in favor of the o ring line (not that o rings are bad, just I think the market could have allowed for the existence of both types of figure).
I think most the hate for retro was the first three waves were just re-releases of older figures. If you had them then you didn’t need the new ones. If you didn’t, they were cool. What a lot of people didn’t realize is that the last two waves were brand new sculpted figures with better articulation. I think they released those early waves to get product out and they had an entire new 4 inch line getting produced. Because of early line hate, I think we missed out on some potentially cool new figures.
@@MacDowin yeah i'm still waiting for the missing G3 style figures... Hydro Viper, Astro Viper etc.
Man you are convincing me I might need these HiYa. Great videos on these figs Mac. I didn't realize the later hasbro figs were any different than earlier ones.
Yep, but everything G.I. Joe.
As I own these two G.I. Joe figures from Hiya Toys and I also own the Hasbro G.I. Joe figures it was nice to see someone make a video showing the differences between the two brands. For me Hiya Toys is killing it and look amazing. I even love the price point of $30-32 dollars total to be shipped from overseas. Storm Shadow (that tattoo is amazing and I hope the Classified line gets this Storm Shadow treatment as a lot of collectors wanted this version before they transitioned to the old school look) and Snake Eyes look great together on my shelf and is why I pre-ordered Cobra Commander and Beach Head. Let’s just hope Hiya Toys continues with this line and doesn’t just release the core characters and then suddenly stop. Now if only Hasbro will continue releasing the 3.34” figures again because the newer ones they did release looked great but they just stopped making them which is very disappointing
Yeah, I am really liking the Hiya figures. Flint was recently announced. Hope they continue releasing some smaller Classified figs and some unreleased Clarified figures.
@@MacDowin As much as I am disappointed with Flint's face sculpt and also don't like the Classified face sculpt that much as well I am definitely all in for this line, I just have to accept the fact that the only company that can get Flints face correct is Super 7, this one is as bad as Lt Falcon but I pre-ordered him anyways, Cobra Commander should be coming soon, he was the third released figure.
Yeah, Cobra Commander this Fall. As for Flint, yeah he looks rough in promo pics, hope he looks better in final figure form. We also just got the Hiya Firefly (Cobra Island) announcement.
@@MacDowin just awaiting to pre-order him, can’t wait although I wish they wouldn’t stick too heavily to Classified and make Firefly to look like the original more than the first Classified one released.
Hi W.T.F! Old video but I'm thinking about getting into the hiya joes. Where did you order for $32 shipped? Only place I found them is gundamit, robot kingdom is sold out and gundamit charges upfront and shipping is $25 per figure.
Great comparison and you’re very entertaining 💪🏼
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
If Hyia made the classic designs instead of more classified styles and had vehicles I'd be all in!
The 1:18scale/3.75-4inch figures are awesome, it's my favorite scale for action figures. I like how the current figures are made and the way they articulate. Far superior to the old o-ring design. The old ring style figures are way too loose and don't pose or stand good. They aren't good at holding things either compared to the current style of action figures. The old figures are cool because they're old and that's how they came when they first started making better poseable figures, but it's 2023 and from 2005 to present 3.75" figures are far superior now then the o-ring style figures
Great comment. Agreed.
i would totally wanna see updated articulation on the 4 inch hasbro gi joe
I agree, the Stalker/Grunt/ Cobra Officer & Trooper are great figures, proportions and articulation.
Excellent video and comparisons. I too have the “Grunt” figure and he is one of my favourites. I have equipped him with a M1 helmet, M1 Thompson Machine Gun. 26:29
Hopefully we'll get some reliable distribution on these HIYA Joes in the states. Most places are out of SS and SE now. :(
We definitely need distribution in the US. Unbelievable we don’t. They must not have made many because of the regions they were releasing in. Crazy they are sold out most places.
I have this figure he's great but why u no compare him to actual other storm shadows?
Hasbro's biggest problem is their lack of quality.
Hasbro's prices are way too high for the level of quality they are producing.
I love the Classified line and none of my figures have broken because I know how to “warm” them up, but the mixed bag quality is disappointing. You never know which figures will have tight legs or loose biceps or which ones will articulate good.
Fortnite quality was really good. Didn’t have any problems that I recall.
Beyond those two lines I dabble here and there and the plastic does seem soft. Indiana Jones figures have been pretty good. I am slowly dropping the Hasbro habit. By years end I will only buy Classified from them.
@@MacDowin I'm happy my personal rule is that an action figure must have a window box.
My rule saved me from the D&D cartoon characters and Power Ranges Lightning Collection problems. I've seen Zarana and Cover Girl breaking easily.
It's a shame my rule is keeping me away from Indiana Jones, GI Joe Classified, Marvel Legends, and other lines. However, I am happier with a higher assurance of good quality action figures not breaking in my hands when moving joints as normal and expected.
The GI Joe Classified line does have a lot of very nice looking action figures.
Unless you are an inbox collector, window boxes will only show you paint quality. For some reason my Cover Girl and Zarana didn’t have the bicep issues that others have had. They are loose, but don’t pop off. I am really disappointed in how they turned out though. Cover Girl being my favorite female Joe character.
The DnD figures were another disappointment, but I believe they fall under what I classify as the first production run bug.
I tested a theory with Tiger Force Outback. Early versions had legs breaking. Later runs had perfect legs. I bought later production run DnD figures and they didn’t break. I filmed a video unboxing Hank and Diana with no edits to show my theory that later figures would not break, but didn’t upload it because I cut myself. The topic isn’t timely anymore so I probably will never upload it.
I have not heard of any issues with DnD wave 2 yet so I think they ironed out those first wave bugs.
I am not trying to justify buying poor quality. I wouldn’t put up with it for long term myself. I think it’s good to investigate and learn what is happening for well informed design making. As I said, I will be dropping most of Hasbro because there are some other companies that I am buying from these days.
Really enjoy Action Force, Hiya G.I. Joe, Animal Warriors of the Kingdom, 4” C.O.P.S., and Street Fighter from Jada.
@@MacDowin You have an interesting point about production runs and differences between early and later runs.
However, I'm not entirely convinced that applies to Hasbro. Hasbro has decades of experience making action figures. They should have the plastic mixture correct for the first run every time because it is certainly not their first time making action figures.
I think Hasbro's problem is from getting carried away with cost cutting. The unfortunate side effect is that it created a bad first impression on many people. Hasbro is not going to get a second chance to make a first impression on people.
People also prefer to see what they will buy. The windowless boxes compared to window boxes is steering people towards the action figures they can actually see.
Disney's disasters have not helped Hasbro's sales either.
I didn't know about the 4" C.O.P.S. line. Have you done reviews of those yet?
I get what you are saying. Hasbro has had many years to perfect their formula.
Now this is not an excuse for them, but I wonder about the internal workings. There are different teams for different lines. All of the Hasbro 6” figures do not have the same build or articulation. So I wonder if that is similar in the production process? Different teams have their own secret sauce, so to speak.
Star Wars team runs the Indiana Jones line. Aside from the obnoxious articulation, it has been a pretty solid line. I have not heard of mass QC issues.
So I wonder if each team gets to formulate their own sauce? Even the new teams working on the new lines.
I don’t have any of these answers. Just musings off the top of my head. Maybe I am way off base and it really is an overall cost cutting mandate across all lines.
The C.O.P.S. Figures are not released yet. Chicken Fried Toys and Fresh Monkey Fiction will be making them later this year I believe. The first figure was shown at the last JoeFest.
Is it because hasbro wanted it to be a limited run not because of qc problems
Nope
Hiya style sounds pretty interesting. I haven't gotten any of the Hiya Joes. The only Hiya figure I have is an Arkum Asylum Harley Quinn. Which I have not opened, so Idk how the figure actually is.
The prices are a bit tough to swallow. They're basically the price of a Classified figure, or like back-filling a modern 1/18th Joe. ( 2008 - 2020 ) It's the same reason I haven't jumped into Marauders, Acid Rain, Green Valley & others. While really cool, a bit expensive. It's probably on the same level as a Hasbro Black Series for $25 or a SH Figuarts for $80!! The Japanese figures are pretty expensive. You can debate, quality & value all day, but thrice the price is tough to swallow.
I won’t discount that price. I agree. I have been buying $10 Fortnite figures for years. $25 is a big jump. Just happy they have only released two so far, lol
I didn’t realize there was a Hiya Harley. Going to look that up.
@MacDowin I was wrong, I looked up some reviews. Apparently she's from Injustice 2. Still, I really like the design.
I will still investigate it. Thanks!
Would Hiya do figures from a game series the same like Call Of duty 4 Modern Warfare? Why Not? I would be interested in something like that. Just saying!
They could if they got the license. Right now Jazwares has that license. I am liking the Hiya figures, so why not.
Wait. That Grunt action figure is part of the Retro line released through Walmart?
Hasbro had quality control issues with those too?
WOW! Hasbro's been having trouble for over two years now.
Yes he is.
There were more quality problems with the last two waves of the retro line than the first three waves. But yes overall the retro releases were a disappointment quality wise. I can justify and praise the updated articulation of the last two waves, but that quality…..eesh.
@@MacDowin The articulation schemes and appearances of the action figures are very rarely a problem.
I can't get over bad quality
I'd be annoyed if I felt like I'd wasted even $1.
I need my action figures to hold up to being bent like intended.
Sorry, I meant specifically the articulation update to those last two waves of G.I. Joe 4” figures. They were brand new sculpts never before released by Hasbro and the more articulation than the modern era sculpt.
Thinking back on my last six years of action figure collecting, I can’t think of a single line or company that hasn’t had issues with the first couple waves of figures. Not excusing quality because I want it to be like it was in the 80s and 90s when no one worried about breaking figures straight out of the box. I guess this is modern action figure collecting. I don’t like it, but this is where we are.
Maybe Spero Toys Animal Warriors of the Kingdom. I didn’t fear breakage with any of those.
@@MacDowin I haven't found any Spero Studios Animal Warriors of the Kingdom reviews on your channel.
Do you have any of those reviews on CZcams or another platform?
I have not made any review videos for them. Wasn’t sure if I was going to or how I was going to do it.
If hasbro used the body types of grunt and stalker( from the 3.75 articulated line of the retro series figures they would be better value than hiya on a price point , but hasbro isnt making any more new sculpt gi joe figures in 3.75 scale , very dissapointing news , if hiya bring out plenty of charecters ill buy them all , i love the 3.75 scale, i like 6 inch too but world building and getting vehicles is limited for many many reasons .
Where can a guy buy these Hiya Joe's?
Is the tatts on stormy in the final release cause it doesnt seem like it
Yes they are. The Storm Shadow I have is the final retail release.
Why did hasbro stop making the modern 3.75 gi joe
They stopped making modern 4” because they were switching to 3.75” o-ring for the anniversary year.
Hiya by a long shot lol but it still isn't better than JoyToy or Toy's Alliance 1/18 scale imo
I don’t have any of those other 1/18 figs. I keep thinking I need to try them out.
@@MacDowin I recently just got into JoyToy and Toy's Alliance Acid Rain. I randomly saw them during my trip to Asia and decided to pick them up. Very impressed at the quality of these figures. It's worth it if you do decide to get into them.
