    Hi Suzie and friends, great conversation, thanks for all your worldly advice, ladies!
    I'm a new nail tech, slowly building a clientele from scratch, (via existing friends and my Facebook page). My living room is my salon and as your guest pointed out, I'm inviting people into my personal space. I have had the 'overheads' comment. I think there will always be people out there who want something for nothing and have no idea how expensive it is to become a nail technician, or how much product costs.
    Much love from the UK x

    Hi suzie .
    I work in the uk and at the moment there is alot of sub salon standard nail bars in my town .
    I have turned people away due to the fact they use MMA in their liquid .
    I have attempted to soak off a few times but it ruins my tools and can take around 2 hours for a soak off which I only charge £10 for (my sets)
    I usually ask them to soak them themselves and give them the best advise I can . Then book them for a full new set.
    Also you touched on this . It's hard to guarantee the work .
    It is soul destroying sending them away whilst I'm still building a client base.
    I try to educate them about these salons and what to watch out for. Usually when I have removed these nails for them the nails underneath are so damaged and thin I dont want to reapply a set to them due to the in and out salons over drilling the nails too x

    Imagine hairdressers wouldn't work on your hair if it was done by someone else..... Or plastic surgeons... Or builders, or painters. What would you do if someone messed up?

    • @FilipinaGamerMama
      @FilipinaGamerMama Před 4 lety +3

      Good answer that was my thought before I read your comment. Imagine that everywhere, that would suck & pointless over all. For every situation, plumbing,car service, gardening, tailoring, glasses filling prescription lenses on your favorite frames, shoe repair, phone & computer repair, tanning salon, ect.... Everything literally. We choose not the technician.
      Edit; I guess these people won't make new client's or make good money.

      Actually an injector (say for example Juvederm) WILL NOT work on you if you recently had a completely different product put in your lips by another doctor/injector. The thing about not working over someone elses work in nails is not as black and white. I personally want to do a removal first on a new customer to check their nails for fungus, pseudomonas or other contraindications, then there's the issue of different products not going well together (for example acrylic over gel is a no-no). THIS IS FOR THEIR OWN GOOD, as well as my reputation. Yes, they would have to pay extra, of course, because it is a lot more work. It's not a huge ask, and I will continue to ask it.

      10/10 that hairdresser will charge you more to fix someone else work though. So nail techs need to do the same to set better standards in the industry.

    • @TallulahFoxxx
      @TallulahFoxxx Před 2 lety +1

      See, I’m in agreement with the lady on the left in Susie’s conversation 😌🤷‍♀️ There’s a couple of major issues with working on another tech’s work 🤔 Firstly, I don’t know what that other nail tech did in terms of prep or types of product 🤔 I’m not saying “turn them away” completely BUT I am saying “right now, their work looks ok… but if I do a fill and the service breaks down, you’ll look at me to take the blame but it may have been the previous tech’s work that caused the issue”. 🤔 What if the previous tech used MMA? 😌🤷‍♀️ I don’t know that, so it could be causing the client serious problems that just haven’t emerged yet. 🤔 If I do the entire service myself from start to finish and it has service breakdown, I know it’s my work that has broken down - if I’m working on another tech’s work, I don’t want to take the blame for something I didn’t do to begin with 🤔
      *Most importantly though* - insurance 😌👌🏻 It may be different in other countries but in the U.K., insurance companies are very picky about what they will cover and when. If a client comes in with what looks like a good set of acrylics from another tech, and I do a fill… if they then get the whole set removed in a week or so’s time and they have an infection or an injury, and they want to sue… *they’ll sue the last person who worked on them* 😌😭😂 If I contact my insurance, they will say that they can’t cover me since I worked over someone else’s work. They aren’t there to cover what COULD have been caused by another tech. They will use that loophole and say it can’t be proven who caused the damage, so they won’t cover me.
      To me, above all, THAT is the issue 🤓👌🏻 Insurance. But secondly, I can’t guarantee the longevity of the service since I don’t know which brand they used, how they applied it etc.

    • @TallulahFoxxx
      @TallulahFoxxx Před 2 lety +1

      Ps. The note about plastic surgeons isn’t entirely accurate ☺️ Ever seen Botched? 🤔 Very frequently they refuse to touch cases that are seriously bad because they don’t want to make it worse. They know right away when it isn’t a good idea. They also refuse patients who want to do yet another surgery (and many doctors before have also refused them) 🤔 Surgeons DO refuse to fix other surgeons’ mistakes. Frequently 🤓

    Client Here: got turned away recently by a nail tech bc i was going to someone else in the same shop. I switched bc my nails would easily brake & she never gave me what i askes for. The one that turned me away was highly recommend but the 1st question she asks me is "arent you [tech]'s client?" I told her yeah but i was asking for you & she pushed me to someone else. That person did a great job so now i have a new nail tech but that entire situation made me so upset. Its my money & i spend it how i please. Im not one to care for price as long as the quality is good. All i want are beautiful nails. Is that too much to ask for??

    • @moriahnash4981
      @moriahnash4981 Před 4 lety +3

      I can understand the frustration! From my perspective listening in my salon I would guess that perhaps the friendships and resentments between those techs had something to do with it. I don’t think that should affect things since they are your nails and you are spending your money, but also they have to work with these people every day and perhaps that may have been a situation that they weren’t willing to be a part of

    Thanks for your videos!
    Here's my experience.
    We work on appointment so the chance of a person walking in and finding one of the nail techs free on the spot is very hard. That said, we have several new clients asking for a new set; we don't do refills on other's works because we don't know what they used and feel better doing our own evaluation on the right product to use (be it gel, polygel or acrylic), so if there's a problem we know what it was. We guarantee the nails so if a nail breaks during the 3 weeks we repair it for free. Not to mention some people really need big corrections. Since removing the product means time (and time is money) we do charge for it, but we make it clear right away, and it's just for the first time.

    • @pinkygengar
      @pinkygengar Před 4 lety

      Malveina as a costumer, this sounds very nice. Especially since you guarantee the nails for 3 weeks. I have had my nails break off before that time, and I never know if I should wait for my refill because my nail tech is really nice and I don’t wanna bother her. Knowing that in advance would be helpful.

    Love that you guys touched on confidence = pricing, and why not mixing products is helpful and healthful for you and your client. The most interesting point made here for me was the ergonomics of your job! How you sit, move your arms, rest your feet....so very important to your health and how effectively you can do your work. I would love to hear more about what you do to help yourself and your clients with potential inhalation hazards associated with your job and the products you choose to work with. Love this video ❤️💅🏻

    Hi Suzie...I know I have said it before but I have to tell you again how much I enjoy your channel. I have been a licensed nail technician for over 16 years (I could not believe the other day when I counted how long I have been doing this) and your videos are such a pleasure to watch. I always have told my clients that when your job makes you happy it doesn’t feel like work and my clients have become part of my family.
    I didn’t raise my prices until after the 10 year mark either and I still squirm if I have to raise them. I have clients that tell me I don’t charge enough and then others that want whatever they can get for free from me and I will admit I’m a pushover sometimes. I have been struggling with some health issues this past year and I’m hoping I can continue to do what I love but if I can’t it has been a wonderful journey. Thank you for all of your lovely videos!

    I'm not a nail tech, but my good friend who does my nails sometimes stresses how she's going to handle raising rates. I get it - you guys want to help out longtime clients but you have to stay in business, too. She's done the whole "grandfathering in" longtime clients and friends thing and I think that works pretty well in the short term. If it were me, I'd probably just post rates for the year with a built-in expiration date. If I don't need to raise rates, great - everyone's happy and clients feel like they're getting a bit of a gift. If I do, well, nobody's surprised. I think you guys made a great point about setting boundaries - blocking out certain days and hours, and upcharging for after-hours and weekends, signals where the boundaries are. And the extra fees for last minute/weekend jobs might even help keep costs down for the regular bookings/clients who aren't super high-maintenance.

      Or it could be the opposite and the tech works over the work and then they get some breaks from the original work not being structurally sound but thinking it was that new techs fault? I had worked from home for a while and early one Saturday morning I got a phone call from a distressed bride who had been crying most of the night before because she had her nails done for her wedding and they were disastrous she had tried to pull them off and her bridesmaid was horrified so didn’t get hers done. I felt sorry for her and so said for to come over. I had to fix someone’s botched job. And a new set for the bridesmaid. My hubby made them coffee and toast. They left so happy. I love my job.

    Im not licensed but I've been doing my own nails for a while and I get so many compliments. People are begging me to do their nails but I'm so scared. Im considering going to school and doing nails out of my home. This has given me soooo much to consider 🤯

    The universe is so kind...i am quitting my job end of the month to pursue my nail business...my husband constantly told me to raise my prices and i had the same issue with pricing, literally all the stuff u guys discussed...but I had to break even with stuff i buy to give a good service...i don't have a huge clientele yet so it was a difficult choice to make...but shockingly raising my prices didn't sound bad and i got more clients wanting to come any way...but i do understand that I have to mame exceptions for my regulars until i have a higher set of customers coming in every month...

    You get a raise at your job then your nail technicians has the right to raise their prices because everything is going up. You can find anyone to do your nails but it is all about the skill set of the technicians. Over the years my nails were more healthy with one technicians then with others. I am not in the nail business and tonight we are having a bad storm and I started watching Suzie because I wanted to find other ways to do my nails myself in between waiting for my technicians who is busy. Thank you for the information!

    I know for myself & some others I've spoken to, the reason for not working on top of another's work is because I don't know what the previous person used. I don't know the products, the brands, how good their prep is, how sanitary their practices are & if something could be going on underneath. I won't turn them away, I will schedule them for removal & a new set. I always make sure I explain why & people are appreciative of it.

    Hi Suzie! I'm not a nail tech, but I do enjoy doing my own nails! I just have a suggestion for your shop. I would absolutely LOVE a line of gel polishes, gem "glue"(gel), and things like that which hopefully I'd be able to buy too! A huge plus would be to keep ingredients as harmless and non-toxic as possible, because that's always my #1 concern!

    I've never heard of people being turned away under the guise that it's because it's "someone else's work." That's totally normal for something like tattoos, but those are permanent. Nail enhancements grow out or can be removed lol.

    I’ve went to same nail tech for 10 years and I love her my fills and gel polish along with design is only 40 dollars with a really nice tip... I’m an old school nail tech and done my nails for years 12.00 for a free hand set of nails 😂 I just cannot see like I use to... if my tech went up I’d definitely still go but if I need a new nail or break one I prep it for her before I go in and that cuts about 15 to 30 minutes off her time... she really appreciates it and I help when they are busy and work on mine so she can do two clients at same time ❤️

    Hi Suzie this will be my first youtube comment. I absolutely love your channel. I've fallen in love with nails because of you. I've never had my nails done. I would really like to start doing my own. I was wondering if you could maybe lay out a few things a beginner would need. The things needed to prep the nail and the things needed to take them off. Thank you so much for putting out such amazing videos.

    I am a Baker, I just opened a bakery from my home fall of 2019 and I am always scared to raise my prices but this video helped me so much. I constantly am told I would pay more than a buck for this brownie it's the best I've had or omg what do u out in there cookies I've never had anything like this before but I was afraid if I raised prices at all ppl wouldnt want to pay. I mostly sell on a military base because my husband is in the army and I sell at his motorpool, but I think a small increase would be better I mean I bake for 15 hours straight so that I can sell fresh baked goods and I take them to their work since I know they dont get a lot of time off. Ok I've rambled long enough but thank you suzie for this video it really helped me !
