I like Bocchi, and I don't agree with his take, but for me I just kinda watched and let him go and devolve into the "birds in cage" thing with K-On, and just enjoyed the chaos. I think in a real life social situation where you give your opinion to other people, your bound to have an exaggerated take at some point, especially so if the other people disagree with you, and that discussion continues. Versus making a scripted video, where you can map the opinion all out, and spend a lot more time constructing it. (Well, even scripts like that could manage those errors too, but what I mean is it can feel easier to find opportunities to see the errors with the take when presenting it, and then rephrase it before posting. Have a good day by the way, if you managed to sit through all this reading! 👍)

And Joey's take is like saying (for example) "no one explodes like a balloon when they are under social pressure". Well, obviously, but that's definitely how an introvert feels. Or, a more "plausible" example: "no one would hide in a box/trash bin/etc", but a socially anxious person would sure as hell feel like doing that sometimes.

Damn the Bocchi takes hurt lol. Its a very accurate depiction of social anxiety, and the absurdly unrealistic and exaggerated art direction reflects that. People with social anxiety tend to get locked in a feedback loop of anxiety, and even very mundane and simple situations can seem like a very real threat. What can start as a thought can suddenly transform into a train of dread, panic, and catastrophizing. The art direction excels in delivering Bocchi's thought process and anxiety. What the show also gets right is the importance of a good support system and that getting over social anxiety is a slow process. I actually love Bocchi's progression through the show because it feels earned and its not rushed. She'd go into her panic state many times when you're first introduced to her, and she does go through that panic throughout the show, but as the show progresses, her friends pick up on her behavior, triggers, and learn how to adapt to help her, even to the point of snapping her out of it sometimes. You have crucial moments in the show too where Bocchi realizes that things aren't bad as she thought, like during her street performance where she realized she didn't have any enemies in front of her. Its those little bouts of progression that are realistic and its what makes it hit home. On the surface, its a cute girls doing cute things music anime like K-ON, but its actually a deep psychological and mental commentary on introvertedness, social anxiety, band life, etc.

    @SF7PAKISTAN Před rokem +130

Man I made this comment before when a clip of this discussion surfaced before but since it's officially uploaded I gotta make this comment again. At 4:13 Joey and Connor are missing the point by miles, especially when calling out the guy who raised his hand for being as socially awkward as Bocchi. I don't think that they're doing this on purpose but because, most likely, they've never been socially awkward. BTR is hilarious at its depictions of social anxiety but they're still absolutely grounded in real experiences, the mangaka has either been through those experiences or they have done excellent research because as a socially awkward person, I have felt every single one of those and which is why I enjoyed the show so much.
As with Bocchi again, most of it is just your mind running off the rails, which is why I think people who haven't had the same experiences cannot understand it completely. But the way the internal ramblings are portrayed are scarily accurate. I fail to remember at this point how many times I've come home to absolutely painful headaches from school or social events because I had to try to make sense of the situation, calm myself, keep track of what's being said and implied and say what I want to say in a way that it precisely means what I want it to mean. All of this had to be done where I would have to run through multiple options of what to say or do or how to stand and where to stand or how to stand so I put my best foot forward and don't come off as aggressive, creepy or weird. For someone who doesn't have it imagine taking 10 calls at the same time and none of the subjects being discussed at the same time have to do anything with the others.
All of these mental gymnastics mean that eventually there comes a point where you avoid social situations because the recovery from them is a greater chore than being in them and trying to blow some steam off. Does all this worrying have any use? Absolutely not, most people don't remember or care and even those who do, don't think too much about it or bring it up to you. But you always think that you're being judged and there's not much that you can do about it, since talking about it somewhat taboo as well.
Which is why as that person in the audience who raised their hand, it's much easier than all the mental stress to somehow get it out there that yes I'm socially awkward which prepares the other party for the conversation which might not be as fluid as they might get from a sociable person. Joey with that question invited the opportunity for that person but then immediately shut it down, to his perspective it makes perfect sense that an absolutely socially awkward person would never have the confidence to admit such a thing. But to a socially awkward person, getting it out there that you are, in a way that isn't derogatory sets the tone of the conversation and the eventual engagement with the other party to be on much more neutral terms where you don't have to absolutely exhaust yourself. It's just as if you're learning another language and you tell the other person that you're not that great at it so they can accommodate you by being more understanding and talking in a way that is intelligible and comfortable for you. In such a context, the other person is also going to be a lot more forgiving of your small mistakes and understand that you don't mean to be insult or offend them. It's something that's rather easy to dismiss by someone who hasn't experienced it but is absolutely crucial to understand how someone who has social anxiety thinks and acts

Thank you for this comment and yeah, I agree with everything you said.
I feel like Joey has never been in the shoes of one with social anxiety or a loner. He’s probably experienced some social awkwardness and thinks that’s how social anxiety works, but doesn’t realize how severe it can be for some people.
I’ve been that one guy in highschool without any friends, the guy in graduation who had no one to celebrate with, while all my peers are cheering and having the times of their lives and their bittersweet goodbyes. Meanwhile I’m too scared to even say hi back to a classmate, too scared to talk in class discussions so I take the hit to my grade, the guy who misses his presentations, or ends up shaking throughout it. The guy in the corner who talks to no one and looks gloomy all the time, which I’m not.
I think it’s crucial for one with social anxiety to have a strong support system, but ironically that’s one of the hardest things to get because social anxiety literally inhibits it. Bocchi’s introduction was one where she admitted she had social anxiety which made it easier for her not to pretend, the show is honestly very realistic at depicting it.
I’m still hopeful because I’ll be starting college soon and I’ve gotten better the past year but it does get challenging at times. I think I’m pretty blessed in life despite all this so im hopeful about the future at the very least. Idk where i was going with this but I love bocchi the rock

Whoa, wait a god damn minute. Is Joey saying that Boochi's over exaggerated personality is not realistic?! What an astute observation and an incredible take. No good anime, manga, book, tv show, movie, or story has ever over exaggerated personality traits to the point at which they are unrealistic to make the character quirky or stand out in any way.

My point was that BTR doesn't do anything different than most anime, movies, tv shows, manga, and etc.. It is quite common to exaggerate personality traits to make characters more entertaining or interesting. So complaining about BTR doing it doesn't really make much sense. I would understand if it was completely out of place and to a level of absurdity that doesn't make sense to the anime, but BTR doesn't do that.

However if you actually paid attention to the show it’s obvious that Bocchi doesn’t actually explode, glitch out or etc… As Nijika can see how Bocchi reacts from time to time, it’s just presented like that for the viewers to understand what goes in a mind of person with social anxiety, because it makes way more easy and hilarious to understand how much a person is stressed out by making them glitch out than just have them go blank for the nth time. So yes, Bocchi is relatable for people with social anxiety and some cringe moments some of us have done around that age.

  • @123thof
    @123thof Před 11 měsíci +8

Social Anxiety Disorder is not something you can just "get over." Its symptoms can't be dispelled by saying "No one is like that." It is a mental illness. It's possible to adapt to one's self-understanding and improved social responses, but that is basically luck emerging into daylight. It's not introversion, which is a perspectival phenomenon in which a person simply processes their world through a distance.
People, when they are treated for it, are best treated by a fairly substantial program of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and medications ranging from SSRIs to benzodiazepines. The reason for that is to give them some stability through the drugs that will help them get to their feet in therapy and personal practice, and empower them to stay that way as much as possible.
In order to cope with social pressure, people have to calibrate themselves with an identifiable world. Even if they hate their world, they learn how to adjust in an adaptive way and maintain their neurological equilibrium, which results in less systemic anxiety due to an inability to calibrate and adapt.
People with Social Anxiety Disorder are in a constant state of physical and neurological turbulence because calibration with the outside, namely society, is so erratic and sometimes nonexistent. Their brains are flooding with anxiety and stress chemicals, memory dysfunction, and general distress. This causes them to socialize chaotically and catastrophize with every real or anticipated failure, due to a constant neurological storm cued and reinforced by behavior prior to and after terrible chaotic events in their brains.
In addition, clinical depression and mania can join the party.
Bocchi and Tomoko of Watamote both suffer from this illness. They are not calibrated to society the way most people are and have to be. Watamote is so disturbing because the stakes are so high: in real life she'd be a suicide risk without intervention likely. Bocchi is in way better shape because she has a large number of people who love her and protect her.

The thing about this is that Joey not only judges Bocchi the Rock wrong, he also has no fucking idea what K-On is like anymore. Honestly, its disheartening to see how many people fall for the stupid "K-On is only CGDCT" meme, one that only got popular in the first place because of Gigguk's terrible anime review on K-On back on his AZ days.
K-On has slice of life, but fuck off with this narrative that K-On doesn't care about the music. Azusa's introduction is quite literally a way to push the narrative forward and make the girls grow out of their lethargy and pursue music more seriously. Not only do they explore that aspect, but they also expand on it showing the underground scene and other bands/perspectives. K-On is a coming of age story, it doesn't rely as heavily on music as Bocchi does, but it IS also central to its narrative. One of K-On's second season episodes perfectly exemplifies this when the girls go watch a rock show at the Budokan and that experience is life changing for them because they're comparing themselves with professionals.
Not only that, but K-On is also meant to be specially appealing towards the female viewers (and it had a meaningful female viewership). While the original manga was Seinen, the anime only took it as a foundation and made its own thing with it. More than 80% of K-On's content is original and made by director Naoko Yamada and scriptwriter Reiko Yoshida, their intention with K-On was to portray the female adolescence in a drama. Specifically, they even meant to downplay the moe aspect and focus more on the human aspects of the girls. As such, K-On isn't an stagnant show, but one that focuses a lot on the passing of time, on the ephemeral nature of adolescence and growing up and the girls never stop developing. It is an understatement how much Joey's and Gigguk's remarks about K-On never truly grasp what the show is actually about.

Having social anxiety is very difficult to deal with. You WANT to socialize with people but also your brain keeps scaring you with all these small stuffs that is probably not a big deal to begin with. aka overthinking. You will always assume the worst and take it as granted. I feel like Bocchi definitely capture perfectly what goes in the mind of someone who has it. But, of course, some of it are exaggerated like the time where she thought she could be sentenced to death for messing up work. nahh I don't think it goes THAT far. I would probably stop at "being a hot topic on the internet and be made fun of" part. But I wouldn't know either cause mine's not that extreme as her. Maybe someone else is. Really depends on the person.
I understand that if someone claims Bocchi's condition as not normal. It's because it is not. But, it is very real. Hence why it's recognized as a mental disorder in the first place.

For me Bocchi really shows to light the behind-the-scenes of it, the overthinking, the what ifs, then the way she talks is the killer really, its so spot on for me. But the upbringing being in a band is also very realistic. The anime talks about doing pre-sale tickets, doing a DIY photoshoot, fucking up on stage even though we rehearsed the songs many times, not having a big crowd, that one band member that just spends their money all the time on a million musical instruments that they didn't need, and several other things. I've always felt that Joey takes on Bocchi the Rock's interpretation of anxiety being too "unrealistic" is a bit dismissive.
I think the reason why Bocchi's depiction of anxiety resonates so hard with people isn't because it is a 100% accurate representation, but it's over the top visuals, near comical situations and Bocchi's behaviour, is ironically the closest we've gotten to a light-hearted but well articulated take on an interpretation on anxiety, depression and mental health issues.
Mental Health has always been tough to articulate or visualize because it's very internalised. That's why Bocchi's depiction hits hard for people with social anxiety of varying levels in my opinion. It articulates the feelings so well, and the rest of the cast don't dismiss Bocchi's anxiety or expects her to just "get over it" immediately.
It's a show about cute girls playing music, with a side of mental health issues and depictions.
In the end to each their own, and the Bocchi argument is just getting stale. I just hope Joey doesn't double down on his take just because he sees so many people disagree with him, but I'm not holding my breath regarding that either.

The thing about Bocchi is that not a single one of the things she actually does because of her social anxiety is unrealistic for a person with social anxiety to do, the anime exaggerates in a way, except the only thing that it actually exaggerates is the fact that she does ALL of these things for the sake of giving as many people with social anxiety as possible something they can relate to. Saying that it's unrealistic and that no person is this socially awkward is straight-up wrong. Social anxiety can also go by the name "sociophobia", or "social phobia", in other words, social anxiety is a phobia, and just like any other phobia, It's a SEVERE and IRRATIONAL fear, just of social situations and interactions.
As for the over-the-top portrayal of Bocchi's thoughts in the situations she's put in, those aren't things you would actually be able to see when they happen in the minds of people with social anxiety, even if you're close with the person in question. The mind will wander when put in these situations, and it can go as far as it goes for Bocchi, it's just, again, exaggerated in how many different directions it goes for the sake of relatability.

I am not die hard fan of both (yeah I have Ryou pfp, but she just cute), so I would not go any "well actually" mode, but majority of what he says could be pretty easily denied or argued about. In the end it is about opinions and taste, so having his own opinion and trash taste is normal, it just feels too much like a lecture rather than opinion from his side. If I had to say, the worst part was him cringing about Bocchi having social anxiety etc. He clearly does not have and never had these problems. @FianMoon Před rokem +5

Man, Joey saying his takes with such confidence to the audience expecting them to agree and laugh with him just for some people in the audience go "...haha" is actual peak cringe LOL You can actually tell how much everyone was disagreeing with his takes.
Leaving jokes aside, you can tell that Joey doesn't know the first thing about how someone with social anxiety feels. Of course Bocchi's behavior is exaggerated, it's an anime after all and it's important for comedic effect, but the mental process and the way she reacts to certain situations is exactly how most people with social anxiety experiment certain situations. The best example of this is literally when she was trying to enter Starry but she didn't know if it was okay for her to go in, or what would she do if there was no one there, or maybe wait for someone else to arrive and then go in, this has literally happened to me when trying to into a clothing shop and I saw too many people and instantly went "but what if someone talks to me, what should I do? How should I react if one of the employees ask me if I'm looking for something?" and all of these thoughts happen in an instant.
The point of Bocchi having a similar arc every episode is literally how you work on your social anxiety from a psychological and therapeutic perspective, you have to change your perspective by having a different feedback from new positive experiences, but it takes time and courage of putting yourself in a social environment, and of course the change doesn't happen from one day to another, that's why Bocchi has to go through similar experiences, but she evidently becomes more and more capable of facing social situations, which is a disservice from Joey's take saying that her character experiences exactly the same every episode.
At the end of the day I think Joey missed a lot of the points from the series mostly because of his lack of experience in regards to certain mental health topics. He's not forced to have empathy to these situations, especially because it's a fictional story and a fictional character, but the way he expresses in regards of people being socially "inept" or awkward can rub people in the wrong way and that's understandable.
