I notice your cam is at 6 o'clock and crank at 12 oclock is that the right position for exhaust at TDC? I took my whole timing cover off cause I thought I installed it wrong which I didn't. Once Engine is rotated 180 both gear pointed at 12 oclock for compression right? Right now it's at TDC crank at 12 oclock and cam is at 6 o'clock. Only issue I have on my 231 is that it cranks ups but stalls. Still working out the issue I am. Thinking its the carb since it backfires through the carb.

How is your distributor timing? Check for vacuum leaks, there are many vacuum lines.
