Haa. Wonderful stuff Richy:) I've had my Himalayan for 2.5 years now and with 11K miles on the clock. It's been all over the UK apart from Scotland and Northern Ireland and done some offroading too. I would venture to say it is my favourite bike with a 411cc engine that I have in my garage and I aint getting another as it's a keeper:) I've also got a Vstrom 1000, I'm glad I've got it but in all honesty the Himalayan seems to come out more often!! Maybe thats saying something?:)

Had my 2018 in for a warranty issue a few yrs back and very foolishly took an Interceptor out for a spin, so now I have 3 bikes. If the Himalayan is a work boot I'd say the Interceptor's a pair of dockers. Gotta have both. 😁

Brilliant review Richy, great to see you totally "get" the little Himalayan. Ive had mine two years and absolutely love it. Ive also got a 1250GS but its the Royal Enfield that rolls out of the garage the most, it never fails to put a smile on my face. Im a offroad novice and its easy, forgiving nature is perfect for me. I thought id find it underpowered but ive loaded it up with all my camping gear, rode from Northampton to Sweetlamb in Wales, spent 3 brilliant days riding trails, ( Nathan Millwards Himalayan Odyssey) then packed all my kit up and rode home again. Ive 3 bikes, if space aliens abducted them tonight, id buy another Himi tomorrow, the others would take more thought.

Damn! I totally get it, I’ve seen these go on for thousands of miles, most famously Itchy boots and a few others! Amazing how power figures don’t matter when you know it’s built like a brick

My youngest son and his partner recently rode 15,000 miles around Europe, both riding Himalayans. That's thirty-five countries over four months, taking in Gibraltar to the South, Finland in the North and a lot of countries in between. Much of the riding was done off-road. Mechanical failure was limited to a broken pannier frame on the bike that had hard luggage. Servicing and tyre changes were completed DIY en route.
The 411 Himalayan is a future classic. So I bought one. I absolutely love it!
    Love and peace.

Good review Richy. Yesterday I did the Trial School day with Superior Motorcycle Experiences based in Dorset. They use the Himalayan. Never ridden off road before. What a cracking little bike . Did what I’d consider some seriously gnarly tracks all of which the bike took in its stride with absolute ease. It’s only limitation was me. Great fun to ride on & off the road. I’ve no connection with Superior, just a punter. Got the day as a Xmas present from the wife. Anyone wants to see what this bike is really about I’d recommend it

Cracking little bike and a great review Richy. Little puppy is the perfect description, lol. I reckon many of us would really enjoy one of these, camping trips it would be great too. PS it looks epic for getting to out of the way photo ops, where big , very expensive bikes would be a liability. Cheers matey.

I’ve ridden the Himalayan quite a lot in the mountains of Nepal and found them to be a solid machine. A little more power would be nice for overtaking but apart from that its sound myself and friends have put this bike through lots and it keeps going.

Nice review, Richy. I've been wanting to see a review of an E5 in the UK and you just delivered a great one.
I passed my test in October, took a Himalayan out for a test ride the following week, and was instantly smitten, put a deposit on one when I got back to the dealer and I've been in love with them ever since.
I decided to buy it specifically because it was capable off as well as on-tarmac and finances and the lack of a garage means I can only realistically have one bike. I joined the TRF and am looking at joining GLASS as well, but I'm currently off work with a broken hand (trail riding fail!) so I'm having to watch what I spend.
The trails you rode look awesome. Luckily I live in a part of the country that also has a number of awesome trails :-)

I bought one of these 10 months ago to replace a 7 year old 60k Honda . Basically it does what it says on the tin, 90+ mpg easy to sevice, not the quickest bike on the planet, but handles well on bumpy back roads , brakes are good , even standard fitment tyres are okay on wet winter roads. Finish is better than expected, not been washed all winter, have fitted a smaller rear sprocket to improve gearing and pull back bar risers for comfort. Only down side to this bike was getting my bum smacked by dealers £187 for a first service.

The Himalayan model is a fantastic bike capable of tackling off roads and distances. The engine is a under stressed and as such should see a lot of miles. Being a long stroke engine it’s strength is in the torque it produces. Comfortable on road and capable off road. I love mine to bits it’s the bike I pick to ride and have a smile every time I ride. Great video that’s well edited and informative.

Really appreciate this low key review, particularly the off road bit, reviewers normally show green or desert, relatively flat off road lanes, but you showed how it got up gradients with an inconvenient rock base, which is slippery in the wet. I was particularly interested in this situation because the dirt road near I live is like this. It seemed to cope ok with the standard tyres, if it can manage this then it can get along most paths. The reason I mention this is because I am contemplating buying one. Thanks for the video.

Just stumbled on your channel great to see someone having it off road as well :) got to say very good review, I've gone from a 1200GSA TE (tons of issues reliability wise) 1000XT to a F800GS an now on a 650xt which has been great for my road touring stuff did a 600 mile day a few weeks back an it was brilliant. One thing that I think is a shame is the weight of the Himmy you can't beat the longstroke engines for traction though. I ride a 1927 Norton 16H which is a 500 longstroke engine not as long as a sunbeam but still good! 4.9HP and 252lb's which really changed my opinion on lightweight bikes and just exactly how much power you need. I'd love to see RE Drop a load more weight from it in the future. I'm off to Iceland next year with my dad and currently looking at the 300 Rally the Himmy did catch my attention in a dealer the other day though. The other one I've been looking at is the 701 Husky which is considerably more money unfortunately but the spec is good it's a shame we done get the DRZ 650 over here. Those local lanes look brilliant!

Great review Richy! I've got an africa twin which I love , and an old yamaha wr250f I go green laning around sussex on. Thinking about selling the yamaha and seriously thinking the himalayan may be the bike for me ( a lot less maintenance I reckon). I've even still got my old honda cub90 that puts a smile on my face after all these years! Go the little bikes !!!

3 of the vloggers I watch regularly have the Himalayan so must be something about them. I filmed on a few of those roads on Saturday (April 9th) trying out different camera (not dirt tracks though)

I nearly bought one a while back but got the GS instead. Sometimes I think the Himalayan would of been a better choice due to the seat heat (me being a shorty). They don't look pretty but I think they look like a proper motorbike if that makes sense. By the way, so jealous of the amount of trails you have on your doorstep.

Nice review Richy. I fell in love with these when @itchybootstravel first started her adventures. I think the early bike had no cat, dodgy head bearings and cost just under 4k. I live in the hope that the big brother with the 650 twin will appear.

    • @iangrimshaw1
      @iangrimshaw1 Před 2 lety +1

650? Yep, I agree. I've taken my Interceptor on trails similar to the early part of the Grindleford one and it was pretty easy, even on road tyres. Decent trail rubber, a 21" front and upswept front pipes should do it.

I bought a Himmy brand new in march 2020, just as I retired from the Fire service. The plan was, do the Wild Atlantic Way, then a few TET trips. Pandemic and circumstances put paid to that. It's still in my shed, fully adventure specced, with 160 miles. ( That's not a typo) I was going to sell it. But your video reminded me why I bought it.
    Adventure Incoming!!!!

Awsone video Richy. Not just of the bike but the video in itself with the trails.
Ive seen a video of this bike before. But you tell the story much better.
If I could afford a second bike I might actually choose this Himalayan.
It reminds me of the MZ…
Also could you pm me the postcodes for those trails.. first and third one please. On face book..
I’ll send you just a thumbs up..
Keep up the great work Richy..

Who needs a GS, you could have four or five of those for the price of a new GS. Sat nav looked quite impressive and easy to use.

Great bike I had one for nearly 2 years love the engine and it will do miles 2 up, sits lovely at around 60mph. However some corrosion issues, misty clocks and gear selector sensor issues which made me change, crap dealer support and couldn't contact RE easily. If you have a good dealer you should be fine l. I think they need to up the quality in some stuff and charge another £500 maybe.

That 650 cc twin version , likely a different bike frame and everything , but there is talk of a 450cc fairly soon with something like 40hp instead of 24hp in the same frame , that to me is more interesting , though like you the bike feels right as is most the time , it is just really for the odd overtake , just got in earlier rode in to the evening on mine , cooler , less traffic and all those fresh air smells you get . I like a night ride .

The google sat nav thingy is great if you have reception. Not so clever in the more desolate Australian roads where you'll be lucky to get any signal. As for the compass, I enjoy the spectacle of it pointing East as you ride into the sunset
